Sardines on toast.

I went well over my breakfast allowance today with sardines, mashed with plenty of vinegar and grilled on two buttered slices of toast. Yummy. The sardines were in sunflower oil. So many calories, and I don't even feel guilty. When I put the empty tin in the trash, I could see the calories were still on the tin. :D

But seriously, I truly think I deserve a treat every now and then, so long as my general trend is South. Furthermore, the sardines were so satisfying, that I didn't need any lunch.

I have a healthy salmon, prawn, pea and lemon risotto planned for tonight, which should put my daily count back on target. There may even be room for a cookie with my coffee tonight.

Although I'm not on the twelve week plan, there are definite benefits of having a plan of some kind. My plan is to eat good food which is well prepared and thought out. I love seeing the contributions on this site which include pointers and ideas for meal planning.

Have a nice weekend one and all and thank you for your posts and support. :) :) :)

PS. I managed to put my socks on today without having to sit on the edge of the bed. I wobbled a little, but hey!! I done it. :)

Hi Tewson,

I love the taste of sardines on toast, they are definitely very tasty. Have you tried them in a tomato based sauce too, that's also quite nice. Your meal later sounds lovely - I really enjoy risotto - I think it's a labour of love to cook, and really delicious. Salmon, prawn, pea and lemon risotto sounds particularly tasty! Yum!

Great that you made good progress with your socks too - really good!

Have a lovely weekend.

Yes, I love them in tomato sauce. Pilchards in brine are nice in pitta bread with cucumber, lettuce and a little Greek yogurt with mint. There are so many nice healthy foods around, but we must always be aware of our personal calorie limits though. So long as the food is planned in my day, I have no issues with how calorific they are, it's the daily intake that counts.

Still smiling to myself about the sock thing. It's the first time I've managed it in the past 20 years LOL :D

OMG Tewson! I can so relate to the sock dilemma! I can put mine on now, with a struggle, but at least I don't feel like my eyes are about to pop out :) WTG us! :)

Thanks for the pointer with the sardines, I love 'em, but had forgotten about them til now :)

Well done Trewson, that's a milestone 😊

I never had sardines, but I like pickled herring.

Any comparison in taste? Might have to be brave and try sometime .

Have a lovely evening, Elissy

Elissy, pickled herring is one of my favorites :) Sardines as described in the original post are quite different in nature and taste, even with plenty of vinegar. They are a warm and comforting food, with a surprisingly delicate taste. They are definitely worth try but, are quite high in calories.

Soused or pickled herrings on the other hand are a sharp and fresh and for me, a somewhat refreshing flavour.

As far as sustenance is concerned, sardines win hands down, particularly this time of year. Have a good weekend :)

Thanks, I think I will have to try them and see. I always wondered - won't know until I try 😉

Thanks for reminding me about sardines, will definitely be revisiting then. I've been having smoked mackerel recently, attempted a kedgeree recipe, but also nice cold with potato salad and gherkins. I think there's a lot to be said for the quality of the calories you're having as well as the quantity. Oily fish is packed with so much goodness

Ruth_canal_runner, Kedgeree! Now there's an idea. I use my dad's recipe, 50/50 cod and smoked haddock with boiled egg. It became a little expensive as the price of cod went up, but, I'm thinking I may try that with a fish pie mix of white fish, smoked fish and salmon.

I love smoked mackerel however, the taste does tend to stay with me for much longer than I would like. When I have smoked mackerel, I try to marinade it for a few minutes in fresh lemon juice to help brake down or remove some of the oils. This is fine for salads but would be no good in kedgeree for me. Such a shame because I imagine it would taste great and so reasonable. The potato salad and gherkins is another very good idea and has gone on my list. :)

Thank you so much x

Sardines on toast brings back happy memories for me, they were a regular TV supper as a child in the '50s . Oily fish is very good for us, and I still buy them. Also yummy on toasted crumpets but definitely need to be calorie counted. Another favourite for breakfast or light supper are Kippers (boil in the bag ones, can also microwave) . On their own with black pepper and a small slice of Hovis .Mmmmmm 😊
