Hi, back again, I talked to my diet dr. last week, hadn't spoken with her for some time, had been last year that I had been to their office, then beginning of the year, I came down with Covid, then had the flu twice. Then May 8th I had a complete reverse shoulder replacement which I am in the middle of therapy now.So getting back to the diet dr. She placed me back on low carb diet, 105 carbs 1800 calories. I am logging my food on (my fitness pal), can't do much exercise right now because I am not released from shoulder surgeon. I have been on this diet since 2019 & seems hard to get back into it like I was. At the start of this I weighed 328, lossed about 75lbs. then the covid period hit. Then I had some family issues, sold my. house got a divorce, then some time later, got married, changed my life again.!!
So now at 71 yrs am gonna try to loose about 55 lbs. So my past days of getting help from healthunlocked, I thought I would come back again for good words & help. Ron

welcome back to the forum Herman7275. Seems like you have had a lot going on but its amazing you are restarting your journey. I just restarted my weightloss journey yesterday so I am hopeful we can encourage each other.
I am calorie counting. I started back in 2016 after a nasty asthma flare up and lost 8 st in 18mths. I maintained until I had Covid in December 2022/January 2023 when it kicked my asthma off badly again and I have unfortunately due to poor food choices and medications piled weight back on. But I know calorie counting works for me so I am just going to go back to that. I am starting at 1800 calories and day and will amend as needed.
Well, I have been working with this low carb diet off an on with health issues, selling my house, moving, divorce, new friends, new church. But now met with diet dr again after 3 yrs and she has changed my low carb to 100 carbs, 1800 calories, so we are close I think. Never had this many carbs before 1st time was 40 carbs, I lost 75lbs. But still have 55 to come off. Dr wants me to consider 🤔 barrictrics surgery but I am against. It, would rather take my chances with ljver disease. But we'll see how we do ok? Ron
Yeah I didn't want to consider surgery either because it is an added risk and once I started losing weight and realised I could do it myself with support then surgery became unnecessary. I have the same opinion now, surgery would be the very final ultimate no other choice option.
Welcome back Herman, sounds like you’ve been through a lot but you seem very positive and congrats on your recent marriage. Interesting that your diet doctor gave you a carb and calorie counting regime, I find low carb has been helpful to me (and family history of t2 diabetes) but out of interest last week I counted the calories ( actually weighed everything) in my usual meals. Have a good first week.
Firstly well done for addressing the issues you have . We are a giant step forward but it is primarily what works for you and what you can realistically eat for life and drastic eating changes rarely work . Watch portion sizes. Could you do any chair exercises - obviously check with medics but I found this made me less sluggish when I was recovering from whiplash . Physio helped too as pain medication made me so sleepy . My husband has lost weight since we both started to eat more mindfully but he still loves his carbs . I pad out salads with beans and pulses using tins for practicality just rinsing them then adding herbs and spices as he doesn’t do bland . Just ensure little snacks don’t hit that trolley . If it’s not in the cupboard you can’t eat it . Could you get someone to join you . Much easier .
Thankyou for the reply and I will look into the chair exercises!! Yes trying new items, recipes, trying to keep fat intake down but keep low carbs down but right now , not eating enough most meals , Not sure last sentence?? I did remarry, I cook for my wife & I.
I get a bit irritated by the ''diet' 'lifestyle' thing. I feel it is true for some but for those of us addicted to carby, fatty, salty ultra processed foods (that is the aim of the manufacturers of course) sadly, it is a diet. By that I mean, for some of us it will never be a natural thing but something we have to work at all the time every day.
It never becomes the normal way we would eat unless we deliberately restrict ourselves to some extent.
I agree that low carbs are great, hard to maintain for many but very effective.
Interesting that UK GP Dr Unwin suggests a short-term shake 800 calorie a day diet and has achieved good diabetic reversal from that weightloss before moving on to a Mediterranean diet.. On a reasonable 800 calorie diet, the carbs will be quite low usually I think.
I dont mean to be rude at all. But you have to compare food addiction to alcohol addiction. At least for some of us.
Well not sure but yes I love my food, I used to eat out alot!! I used to drink some alcohol but quit the alcohol july of 2019, I like to bake sweety & dessert stuff for my friends and wife but hard when I can't woof it down to!! Oh , I guess I have it the low carb, just been at it so long that truthfully I am sick of it but I keep going!!! At 71 yrs Coming back thought I might learn some new stuff from all young folk!! No problem with your speech, no rudeness on your part. Am sure you folk over the pond have lots of different techniques, then us. Not sure a shake would keep my stomach pleased!! I have some nausous feelings from 2 new meds they got me on the last couple weeks. Love to hear more!!! Ron
Hi Herman! Nice reply, thanks. Not one of the young Young ones here - at fast approaching 66. I don't think shakes are a great way to lose weight / internal organ fat, certainly not in the long term. Real food is always better. But shakes have a few advantages for some of us. I have a real food addiction - I should say Ultra Processed Food. 😥 But, of course, we have to eat so several times a day we have to make repeated decisions and they are not always good! So using shakes moves you out of having to make those micro decisions. So, for me, they worked well breaking that cycle. It didn't last I must admin 😭 But, compared to my normal (poor) diet, it was at least more nutritious. But you have to watch for constipation 😲 and take some of those fibre drinks. Our gut biome like that fibre.
I think shakes can be a short term, kick-start. I lost 7 kilos in 4 weeks on shakes. They were 800 cals calls a day and about 60g of carbs. I avoid ones with artificial sweeteners! YUK! And not good for us I think.
Often they are recommended prior to bariatric surgery to quickly get fat out of the liver. Probably you know all this already. But this is a UK GP who helps patients reverse diabetes: youtube.com/watch?v=m7qsIeS...
Sure , had not heard so much bout shakees , since july 2019 I have tried somewhat except(when I am bad) to stay on 40 carb low carb diet!!But new diet dr says 100. Carbs 1800 calories, had only been eating breakfast & supper but now trying to eat (when I remember) 3 meals and and still am lacking in using 350 calories up, Well at least they can't say we aren't trying right !! Thanks for information 👍!!! Keep in touch!! Ron
