Weight gain
The good news is that you are aware that your weight is creeping up and you care. I started off in March with brisk walks but then hurt my knee and that has really slowed me down. It's amazing but I have still managed to lose weight.
I did rely on counting calories etc. but now I'm just using that knowledge to restrict my food intake. It's all down to choosing the right things to eat so you can still have your snacks at night. I cut up a big apple and eat that slowly through the evening which does seem to help.
You'll have to ask yourself if it is worth wiping out all your good work by spoiling it on the evenings. I think about the advice and tips I read on the forum throughout the day which keeps me focused. Write down the ones you find useful and then you can refer to your notes when you are bored. Reading the posts on the forum daily will help too. Keep in touch!
Well done on spotting it and stepping in before the gain reached a stone. I really sympathize. I can see how hard it is to manage one's weight without exercise. I hope things get easier for you soon and the knee starts working well.
Can you try something where you use your arms only - arm, back and abs toning exercises you can do sitting or lying down? Are you allowed to swim? You could just use your arms while swimming. They even have gadgets to help you in and out of the pool if your knee makes that tricky at the moment. I hope the knee itself is settling in well and you are pain-free!
For food boredom, can you try some new foods? Venison, kinds of fish you don't usually eat, vegetables you don't usually eat - aubergines, artichokes, fennel, new salad leaves, range of herbal teas. I find chewing on fennel after dinner works like brushing my teeth in reducing appetite.
Hi
I had a hip replacement in January and while I didn't have any real problems post-op my mobility was limited and my weight crept up to 11st 9lbs. Once the snow cleared I was able to walk locally with my crutches - my daily route took me to the local shop where I would buy a newspaper and two cakes. When I made it home I would reward myself with a large cup of coffee with some cream and chocolate and a cake. I'd eat the other cake in the evening. I live alone so I wouldn't have wanted the spare cake to go to waste! I was really shocked when I realised how much weight I'd gained. I'm now 5 weeks into the 12 week plan which I try to follow although I have to adapt the exercise plan as I'm not up to running at the moment. I do count my calories and so far I've only had one day when I was really hungry. I think I eat well and am putting a lot more thought into my dietary intake. So far I've lost 9lbs and am noticing a difference in my clothes so I'm quit happy to continue doing what I'm doing for now. I'd like to vary my exercise more but, like you, I'm a bit restricted in what I can do.
You'll find a way that works for you. I record my calorie intake on 'myfitnesspal' and find that helps to balance my intake. My daily sugar intake always seems to be slightly over my limit but I have a banana each day and have been advised to have a higher dairy intake. I also eat a lot of fruit which contributes to the high sugar level but I'm not too concerned by that as I know there are other benefits.
I always have a sugar-free jelly with some fruit set in it in my fridge so that I'm not tempted to reach for the toaster or the biscuits.
Good luck!

Thanks Joyce, I had my knee replaced on march 19. Developed cellulitis in the leg so was in hospital for 14 days, then April 13 rushed back in again with blood clot on my lung, risk in lower limb surgery. Knee isn't doing so good, as missed out on a lot of physio, still very stiff and painful, can't drive yet, which would help as I could walk round shops, live on a hill which doesn't help walking. Starting today to concentrate on my food intake, so hope it works.
I found driving very uncomfortable and felt I'd lost my confidence. I couldn't get comfortable and after a very short time my foot was numb so I gave up for another few weeks. It was probably 4-5 months before I felt able to drive safely and I have a cushion so that my hip is in the correct position. I still find walking on hills difficult and have to take it slowly. I went back to work a few weeks ago and was surprised by how tired I was although I think it was good for me to have a bit more structure to my day. I go back to full-time hours next week which might be hard to cope with but I have to give it a try.
Take care
I tried sitting in the car and working the pedals as it is manual, could hardly walk next day, tried again few weeks later and wasn't too bad, so hoping to go out in it tomorrow for a short drive, thank goodness I don't have work to worry about work now, I'm 75 but I miss taking my dog out, my son gets that job now. Started my diet today, losing weight will help my knee, 11-3 this morning, naked and standing on one leg on the scales, only joking, see how it goes.
Hiya
Did you go out for your drive? I hope it went well - it's good for your confidence if you can see some progress.
What a picture I now have in my mind although I was tempted to weigh myself your way this morning to see if I made any difference! I hope it's going well for you>
Take care

Hi yes I did get out in the car, I had an opticians appointment so had to make the effort, no bumps, no accidents, and most people still have their limbs, so it went well. Even went to the supermarket on the way back, no stopping me now. May try it again next year !!! Lost 4 lbs in two days, so will likely stay the same if it was just fluid, but I am determined this time, the weight doesn't help my knee, or my asthma, so I have to succeed this time.
