Weight loss: Hi I am a 14 year old boy... - Weight Loss Support
Weight loss
Andrew, first of all my dear this is a 18+ Site. Adult diets and children's diets are completely different as your body is still growing...
It is unrealistic for you to lose 6 stone in one month, one it's dangerous and two it could do damage to your body and long term health.
I suggest seeking help from your doctor and analysing your diet by keeping it healthy.
Also if it was possible and it is not!!!! The weight wouldn't stay off... Slow and steady is the key....
But please go and see your doctor before starting a diet...
Take care and be careful
Hello Andrew. It's not realistic to lose so much by the end of June ,but you can lose a good amount. Well done for giving it a go , also if you lose it too quick you will have lots of flab. Walk a lot more than usual if you can , eat sensibly and by Christmas you will be looking real good. All my best wishes to you I look forward to watching your process. Also try and address why you became overweight, my trouble is stress and comfort eating, so I took up a hobby to try and take my mind of things. GOOD LUCK
No, I'm sorry to say but it is not healthy, you would probably end up in hospital if you tried to loose that amount of weight in two months, and then good bye summer holidays!!
You are young, maybe it would be an idea to ask your doctor to refer you to a dietitian. Talk to your parents about it, or maybe there is a teacher in your school you may feel like talking to?
I was a fat kid too, and was bullied - now I know that bullies become so when they have problems with themselves : they want to feel superior because they lack confidence in themselves so they have to show off. I know it is very hard, and I can really sympathise with you.
If you really want to loose that weight and keep it off for the rest of your life start by eliminating refined sugar and processed foods from your diet:
no biscuits, sweets, soft drinks, no take aways, no mars bars and similar stuff.
Before you eat anything that is in a packet or wrapper read the label: if it contains something that you cannot make at home do not eat it
Switch to brown rice, wholemeal bread and pasta, and eat less of these lasts, but you are young so do not exclude them completely.
The program on the NHS website is very good.
One other thing is you could check if there are any organization like Weight Watchers or Slimming World you could join - I did that when I was about your age, and had lost weight (now I'm much older and have put it on again, but that';s another story!)
And increase your physical activity - walk, cycle, swim, play outdoors
If you get a chance read this book:
Michale Pollan: in defense of food - his mantra is "eat real food, mainly plants, in moderation" and real food is food that is as close as possible to its natural state
There is a film/documentary I saw recently that you may want to look at: Fed Up fedupmovie.com/#/page/home
Take care and keep posting
Thank you very much for the help but I am doing sport for teams/in school ever Of the week Monday-Sunday so in the respect I can't do many more things and diets I was on one and I just lost control of my body one day and still am eating outrageous amount
Andrew , you can eat an outrageous amount .......of the right foods......fill up on foods that contain no sugar , less fat. I have done it . I lost 5 stone, I've lapsed a bit but am trying again now. I used slimming world club to help me. If it's any help here is a typical day for me breakfast , 2 mins microwave porridge sweetener and chopped banana. Lunch ..jacket potato baked beans or heaps of salad and ham if not baked beans. Evening......chicken ..half if you can eat it, lots of veg plain potatoes or rice. In between I eat fruit or an odd digestive bix , or small pit crisps as treat. If you like chips , peel couple of large potatoes, cut into chips ,boil for 3 mins, drain, spray or brush bit oil on and bake in oven until brown and cooked. Or boil plain pasta and drain, mix with a tin of tomatoes and some herbs. No cheese !!! Give it a try I'm longing for you to get started.
Andrew, loosing six stones in three weeks, where would the skin goes?
Be realistic. Talk to your mum, talk to the school nurse, talk to your doctor.
Talk to your local health advisor. One thing for certain don't go for those fad diet most of us have done in the past. If your weight is not genetic then a good eating plan should help you. Stay away from soft drinks, biscuits, chips, cakes, any sugary stuff. You are pretty clever if you realise you want to help yourself. Good on you. Good luck on your journey.
So sorry you are being bullied. On a positive my son was 5 stone over weight at your age, a year later he was the right weight for his height. He grew, changed what he ate and moved more. He also worked on his emotional problems. Six years later he is still fit and healthy and a normal BMI.
Please go to you GP and all the best.
You can not lose it as fast as you want but you can start.
Hi Andrew I am sorry that you are feeling so miserable and that you are being bullied but these are 2 different issues; these stupid, pathetic people will always be bullies and pick on people regardless of weight, usually because of their own insecurities. Even if you lose weight they may still want to bully you because they have got into that pattern with you so you need to deal with the bullying separately - most schools have great support for kids in your situation and they will deal with the bullies and help you too. Tell your family too so that you're not dealing with this alone. I have been through this with my own son and your mum would want to know and to help you.
Re you wanting to lose weight, that's great - but do it for your own health and happiness not cos of the knuckle-dragging bullies. I know that you want instant results but the kind of weight loss you're looking at isn't possible without surgery - and I am not advocating that! You can achieve some quite good losses relatively quickly (I have lost a stone in the first month) but you need to see this as a long term plan. You are approaching a good time as school holidays will soon be here - start your changes now and the you that goes back to school after the summer should look very different to the current you! The holidays will also give you time to be active. You could maybe join a gym? Check out your local council as they may have special young people's sessions and shouldn't be too pricey.
I would suggest that you talk to your Dr as teenage boys' bodies do need a lot of nutrition for growth and, particularly as you are very active, you shouldn't starve yourself. You should definitely cut out unhealthy carbohydrates - sugar, cakes, fizzy drinks etc and load up on green veg, drink lots of water and you may want to check out the high fat low carbs diet as you shouldn't feel hungry on that at all; dietdoctor.com/lchf
You will get there and life can be better than it is now. It won't always be like this

That is a ridiculous suggestion to make to a 14 year old boy! He needs to speak to his parents (after all its his mum who probably does his meals!) and getting him to look at an adult focused diet website is irresponsible!
I'm really surprised at people recommending an impressionable 14 year old to look at the dietdoctor website. As others have said he needs to speak to his parents (they control what he eats at home) and then go with them to see his GP! Recommending websites to adults is fine, they have the ability (in most cases) to make an informed decision but a child who is currently being bullied and is desperate to lose so much weight should always be advised to go to speak to his parents first and to report the bullying.
I did do exactly that in my post. I said that he should speak to his doctor, his teachers and his parents. I simply said that he might want to have a look at the diet doctor site as he had commented about "losing control and eating an outrageous amount".
Hi Andrew, I congratulate you on wanting to deal with your weight, it is so much easier to lose weight when you are young and active.
I see someone else suggested Slimming World or Weightwatchers, personally I can say I have tried both and especially, I think, for young people, I can recommend Slimming World. As you are under 16 Slimming World is free but you have to go with a paying adult.
Slimming World do not tell anyone else your weight and don't even give you a diet, they record your weight in a book that you keep in your possession. They concentrate on swapping the bad stuff for healthier stuff, for example fried crisps could be replaced by baked crisps.
Maybe there's an adult in your life who could benefit from the Slimming World lifestyle and would take you along.
I can tell you, no one will laugh or point you will get 100% support and encouragement. Go for it Andrew with a few changes to your eating habits and your active lifestyle you could be a new person within a few months and, if you don't lose it too quickly you are much more likely to keep it off.
Finally Andrew, you are still growing and whenever you do have a growth spurt you could find yourself growing into your new body sooner than you think.
Good luck and good health.
hi there the best diet i'm on at the moment is the slim-fast diet and may i say the weight is dropping of i was 28st now i'm down to 21st 6lb but i most admit it took 7 years, but the lost five month that I've f been on slim-fast I've 2st but you have to be ready to give up all those naught treats and stick to and you will see the weight drop of try it see how you go look forward to hear some good news.
Really bad of you to reccomend slimfast to a 14yr old boy, the minute he puts solid food in his mouth the weight will pile on again, the lad needs a healthy approach to his weight loss and hopefully the best person to do this is his mum
i'm really sorry if i've cause you any pain, in his opening letter he asked for advice, i was only trying to help by showing how its help me, yes your right the best person will always be his mum, but when someone asks for help and advice from this site all i was doing was offering some advice please except my apologies for cause this misunderstanding. i hope you will except my apologies i didn't mean any harm.
ask your parents to take you to ur doctor who will refer you to a dietician they will help ur parents to help you too. talk to someone about the bullying if not ur parents teacher or other family. good luck and besafe
ceejayblu is spot on. Referring a 14 year old to that website is irresponsible. It would be far better for him to talk to his parents and his doctor.
You could lose it by May or June next year. If anyone tries to tell you that it can be done in a month or two then they are either lying or trying to get money out of you. If you did lose it that quickly you would be very ill. Think how long it took to put it on. It didn't appear in a few weeks so it won't go in a few weeks.
At your age no respectable diet group or company would suggest you followed their plans without some advice from your GP first. You will also need to get your mum on board as i assume she does the shopping and at least some of the cooking.
You might find that by changing your diet and getting a bit more exercise you could lose some weight like that. If your main meals are something like grilled meat with all fat or skin removed lots of veg cooked without any fat and simple boiled potatoes or salads with no salad cream or dressings again with meat without fat and breakfast can be cereal without sugar and using semi skimmed milk, if you want something sweet have some fruit, this sort of eating combined with walking more maybe cycling and keeping busy may do it for you but most people need a more structured plan.
Often at your age the whole family don't eat well which is why a chat with your GP and getting mum involved would be good.
I lost 5 stone when i was your age. It felt great. Some people were still nasty because they were jealous. But it is worth it. What you have to remember tho is that once you have lost it you can never return to eating how you do now. That is not normal or it would not have made you overweight. Also you might find that your family eat bigger portions than normal or eat the wrong stuff so you might have to put up with them not understanding why you don't join in with eating big portions or whole chocolate bars or takeaway food in future as well as while you are losing weight.
Good luck. Hope you find a plan that works for you and next summer you areenjoying the sun with a great beach body! The bullying will mostly stop if you are succesful and the few nasties who don't stop will just be jealous of the attention you will get as the weight comes off. Good luck
