I'm 20 going on 21 in august, and I have been struggling with my weight for as long as I can remember, i know have a partner and he struggles to put on weight so I tend to eat the same things as him, because of money problems, and we both smoke. Oh and we live with my partners best mate who also smokes. And my mum, nan, auntie and grandad all are diabetics so I'm at very high risk anyway. Advice please.

Hi, start by increasing your activity going for long walks is free, or if you are really committed follow the couch to 5k programme.

So the long walks it is. Exercise is the answer to practically everything. Good luck!

Evie, you gave made the first step to changing your eating habits by joining us on here, Well done you!

What about trying to cut down your portion sizes on the more unhealthy things you eat now. You could maybe have porridge for you breakfast, this is cheap if you buy a supermarket own packet and it can be cooked in a microwave or on the stove using skimmed milk or water.

Something I find good is home made soup, which is filling and cheap to make. Buy a mixture of veg, what ever is reduced in price, plus some stock cubes or a tin of supermarket own chopped tomatoes. Chop all the veg up quite small, put it in a large saucepan with a litre of water, a couple of stock cubes and the tomatoes, some pepper and herbs if you have them. Bring it up to the boil, turn the heat down and let it simmer for half an hour or so, till everything is cooked. You can then eat it as it is or if you access to own liquidise it all.

Good luck in what you want to do.

Hi Evie,

If you're embarrassed to go out and exercise (which we totally shouldn't be, but I can get the same feeling sometimes) there are plenty of things that you can do in the house as well. Have you heard of 30 day shred? You can watch it on youtube, and just need a little space in the house to do it.

I'm turning 21 in august too! I'm using my 21st birthday as a date to work to. A couple of my family have had diabetes, but it hasn't worried me too much, you could say you could use that as a determination to lose some weight, but at the same time you don't want worry yourself too much. The nhs plan really does work, and my advice would be set yourself a weight to be at for your 21st birthday, if you struggle to lose weight, don't give yourself too much of an unrealistic target, because you will get on a downer if you don't lose what you want. I struggle to lose weight and keep it off at the moment, and I'm usually rather proud of myself even if I stay same for a week. I am going to start the nhs plan again, and I have set myself a target of 1lb a week, so then if I lose 2lb one week and stay the same the next, over time it will work itself out, because I find trying to lose 2lb a week is just too much to aim at for me. It may take a few weeks for you to work out what works for you, but once you do, go for it! :-) good luck.

Welcome Evie! Try and keep busy to start with. I find that helps as it takes your mind off food especially if you are doing something productive. Most of my cupboards are now tidy. I think it is best to set yourself a first goal and then work to that to start with. If I lose one pound a week or stick I'm happy. My husband needs to put on weight too so he has the larger portion and I have the smaller one so that helps. Do it now while you are young as it is much harder the older you get.

Hi

Well done for looking at this blog. The hardest part of anything new is always getting started so well done. I used to be a heavy smoker and tried everything to stop but read Alan Carr the only way to stop smoking and I haven't smoked for 10 years now. Hope that helps. It reverses the brainwashing of smoking. Maybe suggest to your partner to try stopping with you or if not, at least smoke outside. For losing weight, this forum is great for motivation so keep logging on. Plan your meals so you can stick to it. I'm only on day 3 of 1400 calories and don't feel hungry. Then next week I'll be starting the 10 minute exercises. I think the reduced calories and exercise are so doable. Stay motivated. Diabetes is an awful condition. I'm a nurse and see first hand the complications of it so by losing weight you can reduce your likelihood of getting the condition. Keep motivated and positive. You can do this.

Hi evie,

Welcome to the forum, you have come to the right place, everyone on here is lovely and do supportive! I'm on week 2 of the NHS plan and feeling great, not hungry or fed up and this forum is keeping me motivated when I have weak moments.

I'd definately recommend downloading myfitnesspal, it's a free app, you just enter exactly what you eat and how much and it adds up the calories for you. This way you can check stuff before you eat it and keep the track of where you are eating the wrong things or too much. Also, maybe buy yourself a slightly smaller plate then when you serve meals for the two of you, you will limit what you have and he still gets whatever he wants.

For exercise I have been using a static bike at home, and using couch to 5k to build my fitness, going fast for the running bits and slowing down for the walking bits. Believe me when I say I literally am useless at exercise, but I can do this. It's important to find something achievable that you can stick to.

Good luck with whatever you decide to and I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on. 🌸

Hey welcome to the group, you have come to the right place for help and support. Its difficult when your partner can eat what he wants, my partner can eat all sorts of junk and not put on a pound. as hard as it is you need to put yourself first, starting by eating better food choices, this doesnt need to be expensive and portion control is a big part of it. I am a smoker too, that wont affect your weight loss as long as you stick to good food choices and being active, eventually i plan on quitting but want to get the weight under control first. A good place to start is the nhs 12 week plan, really simple to use and follow. Im sure if you explain to your partner why this is so important to you he wont mind supporting you getting healthy. You are at a great age to start. Wish you all the best
