Hey all,

Does anyone have any motivation/tips for me to get back to the gym and actually enjoy it?

Thanks.

Hi,

Just try 1/2 an hour 5 days a week...walking to start on the treadmill, plug in and zone out !!! Don't push for any more then watch the weight fall off..... I've done 12lbs in 7 weeks...slowly but surely !!!

Listen to the tv & find good inspirational articles to read and get ideas from.

You can do it xxx good luck.

Hi.. Thank you for reply.

I am unable to do.five days a week. I work Monday - Thursday 7am - 8pm and when I get.home my gym is closed. But I do force myself to go on weekends.

I take my music with me but sometimes I find it hard to switch off lol.

Will keep you updated :) x

Hi, first left me ask: are there things in the gym you actually enjoy? Or at least can tolerate without it feeling like torturous? If yes, It stick with those machines or classes. You may like the elliptical but not the treadmill or there may be a certain instructor or class you prefer over others. If no, explore things outside of the gym setting: walking/jogging outdoors, at home workout DVDs, kickboxing, etc. You don't have to workout in a gym to get results. They key to getting results is finding a workout you can be consistent at and it's tough to be consistent if you totally dread it. I tried to force myself for years and it didn't work. It wasn't until I found something I liked - a dance based DVD (because I like to dance) - that I was able to stick with it and lose 70 pounds in 10 months.

I like the tredmill. But I walk on it. I like the cross trainer too. I have workout games for the PS3. I just need a massive kick up the butt to get going lol

Hi lisaj241,

Yes, here's a couple of tips - but they're probably not what you're expecting!

1. Stop going to the gym. Take a holiday from it and use other exercise / activity (swimming / running / cycling / hill-walking / rugby / golf / disco dancing / whatever) to keep up your overall exercise /activity levels. After a couple of weeks or so, go back to the gym and perhaps be a bit more selective about what bits of kit you use.

2. (Which sounds similar). Stop going to the gym. Take a holiday from it and don't compensate for it. My guess is that after a couple of weeks or so, as your body changes down a gear or two to adjust to the lesser levels of activity, you'll be gagging to get back to the gym.

I'm recovering from surgery at the moment and I'm having to build back up my activity levels pretty carefully and I'm finding even a small step back towards the active direction really does make a huge difference to the whole way I feel. BUT - I do have to be careful not to overdo it yet.

do couch to 5k!! it is 30 mins, three times a week for 9 weeks. you can download it on to your phone as an app or a podcast!! the lovely laura will tell you when to run and when to walk. For added motivation sign up for a 5k race at the end of it!
