Hi everyone,

Last Monday I weighed 13 stone 10.0 pounds, and today I weigh 13 stone 10.2 pounds, so I have gained 0.2 pounds this week. I had been doing well for most of the week, but over the weekend I succumbed to a take-away (Chinese), and when I calculated my calories for the day on Myfitnesspal, I discovered I'd had over 4,000 in one day!!!! I don't think I'll be having another take-away for a while...! That's my first goal for this coming week. Although I did enjoy the meal, I didn't feel very well later in the evening, as I felt bloated and uncomfortable.

I still haven't managed to get back to attending the gym, and I'm not entirely sure why I have become gym-shy... I have done some kettlebell exercises most days, but I've found it difficult to do 30 minutes per day. I have however managed to go for a walk most days, and that has been enjoyable.

So, my goals for this week are to 1) Try to eat sensibly and keep my caloriie intake within the recommendations of Myfitnesspal (aiming for 1,200 per day); 2) keep up the daily walks; 3) Go the gym at least once this week; 4) Try to do 30 minutes each day of Kettlebell exercises. (6 out of 7 days, as I will give myself a 'day off'). I really hope to be able to report a loss on the scales next week.

Please join me to share your own experiences at this Monday weigh-in, and good luck to you all for a good week ahead.

Good morning Lowcal. Well that's pretty good when you've had Chinese and become shy of the gym. Well done. That's maintenance! Week 14 for me and another 3 lbs lost. That's now 3 stone and 1 pound lost in total despite eating out three times this week. I have however been able to make sensible decisions from the menu. Sent the bread, cheese, ham and olives back, gone for grilled fish without oil and salad without dressing as the vegetable. Even watched my husband eat dessert Saturday night! Found I was on a plateau by Thursday so changed my diet by increasing my carb intake very slightly and voila, by today had lost 3 lbs. My next goal is to get down into the stone below, so started at over 18, ploughed through 17, eased through 16 and 15 and now just 3.5 lbs to lose before getting into 14's. Feeling motivated, determined, proud and thankful for all the support here. To everyone who has lost this week, excellent work (and it's no easy task!) and to those who have gained, make this your week to really make those scales work for you...You can do it. Good luck.

Thank you for the encouragement, Candystripe.

You can rightly feel proud of yourself, You are an example to me!

Thank you Zenette and well done to you also because you have recognised exactly what you need to do in order to lose! What you have done so far is brilliant and all so very positive with a great frame of mind and attitude is just as important as calorie counting! I think that 0.1 of a kg just shows what you can do with a little fine tuning. By this time next week I will have a contender! Well done Zenette, I shall look forward to your post next week. Good luck X

Hi Candystripe,

Many congratulations on losing 3 pounds this week. That's brilliant. Well done! You're getting ever closer to the 14's - great that you're feeling motivated and determined as that will help you achieve your goals.

Wishing you a great week ahead.

Hi Candystripe,

Well done! You have made amazing progress and I look forward to heaing that you have brokedn through another barrier. I cam remember how elated I felt when I dropped down to eleven stone something and then into 10 stone something.

I was 8 st 3 lbs for all the years of having a family and then helping with the grandchildren! Now I am retired and largely inactive so getting back to a healthy BMI is a long slow haul. I always feel better when I read of your progress because it tells me that I shall get there eventually :-)

See you all next week.

Candystripe in reply toAutumn-Witch

Thank you Autumn-Witch for your words of encouragement, as we know, it's not easy! Yes I agree about the retirement thing and being inactive and to be quite honest, I have never been "small" but piled on weight when I gave up smoking and when we lived in Monaco as I was so bored! Now we're in Lisbon there is so much to do, so many beautiful places to walk to or hop on the metro to explore and of course to drive further afield. I exercise five days a week as I am now motivated and happy. Good luck to you Autumn-Witch, we'll get there eventually!

Same here! Gained 0,1 kg ... I was a little despondent, as it was my first week, and everyone seems to do so well in Week 1.

However, I am bouncing back and will be more vigilant in the problem areas this week. I know what I am doing wrong - just have to have a plan of action to tackle them.

I had a few events to attend etc., which meant I did not get to the gym as often as I wanted, but I still went four times in the week, which is OK.

My goals are:

- Keep better count of calories.(last week involved a lot of 'estimating'). Aim for 1200 on days I run, 1000 on days I do less strenuous exercise.

- No eating after 8 pm.

- No sweets purchases.

- In bed no later than 11.30 pm (preferably 11 pm).

Let's hope for a better week!

Hi Zenette,

Glad you are not dwelling on that very slight gain - you sound positive and motivated and you've set your goals for this week, so hopefully there will be a loss on the scales next week. Well done for getting to the gym 4 times - that's really great.

Hope you have a great week ahead.

Hi Zenette,

Don't feel downhearted. Those goals you've listed in your post are really good. Just the sort of things to keep you motivated and help you build some new routines. If you spend the first couple of weeks getting organised and making some healthy living changes it will soon be reflected in the scales. I found the secret was to make gradual changes to lifestyle so that it all becomes a new habit that ou are happy to live with.

Zenette profile image
Zenette in reply toAutumn-Witch

Wise words I will remember, thanks Autumn Witch!

Jsports profile image
Jsports in reply toZenette

If you went to the gym 4 times in a week then you would have put on abit of muscle especially leg muscle which weighs heavier than fat. But don't worry this new muscle has now increased your metabolic rate and your burning calories faster than you were last Monday. You just need to give it time to burn! It's not instant it won't burn in just a few days so keep doing what your doing, keep your exercise to an intensity that gets your heart rate up or the weights make you fatigue by 12-15 reps and it will soon drop off.

People don't usually have massive drops in weight during week 1 those that work hard at the gym....but what you will have is the ability to up your weights on exercise constantly for a good few weeks. So try to not stay stagnant your body really can cope with the increases. 6 weeks ago my leg press was about 107-110kg quite a struggle. I now leg press with so much effort may I add 151kg!

Don't worry week 2 and 3 you will see results keep at it :)

Hi Lowcal hope you have a better week this week. It's week 1 day 1 for me! Attempting to lose 4 stone. I have to say that I have had a dreadful Summer with lots of alcohol and any food I wanted so expected this morning's weigh in to be dreadful but only put 1 pound on. I can only put it down to having to walk my lovely little doggy every day so I advise keep up the walking if you enjoy it. Good luck! x

Hi Juliet,

A warm welcome to you, and thanks for joining us for this Monday weigh-in. Glad to hear you only put 1 pound on after all that food and drink over the Summer, and great that the walking with your dog helped to keep the weight gain at bay. I will definitely hope to keep walking, as it's really nice to be out in the fresh air and great exercise.

Wishing you a good week ahead.

Good morning everyone,

Lowcal, after a Chinese that very small gain is really good, I go up 3lbs the day after a Chinese and spend the next week working it off. Sounds like you're back on track, I never go to the gym and if you're walking daily and doing kettlebells you are getting exercise :)

I am very happy to say I have lost 3lbs this week :) That is mostly down to having a cold so had no appetite, a mouth full of ulcers so avoided chewing as much as possible. Basically I ate 2 bowls of broth almost everyday last week and that was it food wise, I did have a few treats as I felt so crap I did indulge in more chocolate than I should have. I just got EA Active personal trainer for the Wii and spent most of the weekend on that so really happy to report a loss this week. I'm am now 15st 12lbs and it feels great to finally be out of the 16s :) I went shopping in person to a normal sizes shop and bought myself a new pair of leggings, it was great not having to order online from a plus size shop.

Wishing you all a loss next week :)

Hi Kate,

Thanks for your encouragement. I think I would have lost some weight if I hadn't had that Chinese takeaway. I did enjoy it at the time, but I did feel very uncomfortable afterwards. I'd not had one for many weeks, and was amazed by how salty it tasted.

Congratulations on losing 3 pounds this week. You're into the 15's now, and that's brilliant! However, I am sorry to hear that you've had a cold - hope you are feeling better again soon. Hopefully your ulcers will go away soon and you can get back to normal again.

Your EA Active Personal Training on the Wii sounds interesting. Sounds like good fun.

Enjoy wearing those new leggings. Great that you have more choice now.

Have a great week.

Morning all! :)

Sounds as though everyone's had a good week! I know a few have gained but considering the circumstances its not bad at all! And well done Candystripe! I hope you keep ploughing towards your goal! :D

My week was quite normal. Although I only managed 2 exercise days this week and made the mistake of buying some chocolate covered pretzels when I went shopping! I couldn't help myself!

But they are all eaten now so I have nothing to worry about eating this week! I did a bit extra jogging last night to try and get the scales in my favour for this morning!

It may have worked a bit in my favour as I managed to lose 1lb! Bringing me down to 12st 6lb. I find I am struggling a little to get down to my new 12st goal. I seem to be putting on a lb then losing one, then on then off.

I will be trying my hardest this week especially as the wedding is on Saturday and I have been informed there is a buffet!! I will have to try not to fill my plate with all the bad nibbles!!

I wish everyone a great week and hope you all manage your goals! :)

Sophie

Zest profile image

Hi Sophie,

Congratulations on losing 1 pound. That's brilliant.

I agree that it's frustrating when weight fluctuates up and then down and then up and then down - mine has done that over the last few weeks as well. But hopefully we will be on a downward trend overall.

Good luck with the Buffet on Saturday and enjoy the Wedding. There will definitely be some healthy choices on that buffet table, and you can decide on your portion sizes, so you have control on how much you eat. Buffet's are notorious for encouraging people to eat more however, so having a 'plan' in place before you approach that table can be really helpful.

Have a great week.

Lowcal :-)

Artsoru profile image
Artsoru in reply toZest

Thanks Lowcal

I was thinking the same about the buffet, I should be able to choose what I want to eat. I'm hoping that its mostly food I don't like so I shouldn't go too mad!

I had a good calorie day yesterday and have managed to plan my meals for today so I can already see I am under my goal. And that's without the exercise I'll be doing after work! :)

I'm looking forward to great week. Thanks for the encouraging words! :)

Artsoru profile image
Artsoru in reply toPrin

Thanks Prin!

That's a good idea with the salad. I should fill my plate with the healthy stuff first and if I have room, have a few cheeky nibbles.

Luckily I'm not a desert lover so it shouldn't be too bad! :D

The pork baps sound nice!!

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply toArtsoru

Hi Sophie & Prin,

I would be careful when you mention you might have a 'few cheeky nibbles'(Sophie) - maybe limit to just 2 cheeky nibbles with the remainder being healthy stuff, and maybe have just one or two 'pork baps' in total (Prin), rather than thinking of having several (I realise you didn't specify how many you are likely to have - maybe you'll choose something completely different - they do sound tasty though!) But who am I to talk after my day of over 4,000 calories last week - I had little self-control on that occasion! But next time, I hope to be better.... :-)

Sometimes I feel like buffets lay in wait for us, knowing that we find it hard to restrict ourselves in such situations, and they are sneaky with their tempting dishes. We must be aware of their wily ways, and fore-armed with strategies to help us to cope.

But I think you'll both be able to cope and that you will hopefully enjoy your evenings and not come away too badly off...!

Good luck!

Lowcal :-)

Good morning Low Cal and everyone,

Despite having a holiday and missing you all last week I was delighted to read the scales this morning and find myself back to 10st 10 lb 2 oz. This seems like a miracle because I have been bone idle for the last 10 days and have had no gym sessions.

I've finished the nhs 12 week plan and lost a total of 11 lbs. I'm happy with the slow but steady progress so will continue to put in the effort and keep it up.

Glad you managed to maintain and not gain, LowCal, and I know how you feel about being gym shy. Sometimes it's a real effort to get there. Because of where the gym is located I motivate myself by deciding it won't be a wasted journey because I can do part of the weekly shop on the way home.

Hope we can all have a successful week ahead.

I hope you have another good week.

Thanks for your encouragement regarding the gym - I really must try to motivate myself to get there. I do enjoy it when I get there.

Morning Lowcal never mind about your 2oz gain, now I need to tackle you about your gym membership, don't waste that money! How about a nice class Pilates or yoga just to get you gently back in? Can't remember what I was last week, but I think I am around the same 10 11, would like to get down to 10 8 by end of September, if I manage that it will be my lightest adult weight yet. Only need to do that to limit the damage my holiday is going to do:) have a good week losers (we hope!)

Thanks for your advice regarding doing a class - I shall definitely think about that and see what classes I might fancy doing.

Good that you've maintained your weight this week, and not gained any. I'm sure you'll attain your goal of getting to 10 stone 8 pounds by the end of September - I have faith in you! You can do it!!! It would be great to be the lightest you've been in time for your holiday.

Let's hope we're all 'losers' next Monday...!

HI All

bad week for me I'm afraid. A friend came to stay and though we walked 3 hrs 2 days on the trot. The thai curry & scone took their toll and I'm now just over 11 st again. I really don't know how to manage having visitors. I'm so dissheartened but I will try again this week. I'm going to do something different and instead of combining fasting with calorie counting I'm just going to calorie count and see what difference it makes.

Think I should log in here a bit more as well because everyone's stories and posts really do help me keep on track and I know I've not logged on for a while.

Hey ho - well done to all you losers and comiserations to the rest of us.

Mind you Low Cal - I have to say that eating a chinese takeaway and maintaining like that must surely be an major achievement not something to lament - in my books that's brilliant! :)

Will log in soon and all the best to us all for a healthy week ahead.

Thanks for your very positive framing of my Chinese takeaway lament - I will stop lamenting it. It is in the past now. I've had a good day's food intake so far, and have a healthy dinner planned for tonight.

Wishing you a good week ahead.

Lost 1 1/2 lbs this week! i was 13.10 now im 13.8.4. Very happy. went out for a meal monday (steak, scampi and chips nom nom!), havent excercised as much as i would like (3 times this week) and keep having little treats like a bag of crisps here and there. I make sure to record everything i eat so even if i go over my calorie allowance i know! ive had an average daily calorie intake of 1,390 (after exercise). My aim this week is to continue to do more exercise and try and eat about the same.

well done to everyone on the progress this week, whether its to loose or to maintain (which can sometimes be just as hard!) keep up the good work :)

Hi all, my scales read 16st13&1/4 this morning. A big part of me (my stomach ;) ) is wishing I'd waited until this week to join the weigh in. I didn't give a thought to how the bank holiday excesses might catch up with me after I'd logged last week and a sly extra weigh in on Thurs had me back up to 17st3 :'( So today I'm 3/4lb up on last week.

I'm starting the 12 week plan today and have firmly promised my hubby I'll stop drinking alcohol for the month - am going to exercise in the evening as that's when I sit and drink and nibble through boredom. Spent an hour last night making 2 big pots of soup - cream of celery and cream of tomato using Greek yogurt instead of cream :) so I'm armed with healthy lunch/snacks for those desperate times!!

I love reading this thread, you're all so positive and encouraging.

See you next week

Hi Kate,

Your homemade soups sound really delicious and healthy, and I think that's a great way to ensure you have something filling and nutritious. I agree that the Bank Holiday is a very challenging time - and often leads to a bit of weight gain, but thankfully you've not gained very much, and I am sure you'll be able to get back on track again this week. Keep positive and your motivation will help you to keep on track.

I think now that we have that Bank Holiday behind us, that we'll be more on a downward trend weight wise - and therefore there are great feelings of happiness to come as we achieve our goals.

Have a great week.

Am I the only one that looks forward to lowcals Monday weigh ins? Was literally like yay! She posted haha. Lowcal you now have the same realisation that I do, you eat well for 6 days and have one nice day and it messes up everything! For me I had an Indians the day before my exam so I could study without cooking. And I put on 2-3lbs :( losing all I had done in last 2 weeks. Iv not lost that weight as of today's weigh in and I now weigh under 13 stone again.

Started 13 stone 9lbs now weigh 12 stone 13lbs. My goal is to get 12.5 stone by 19th September.

Kettle bells can be quite good but you have to be well trained on using them. For instance your doing them everyday without rest which I'm guessing is all over body exercises. If you can do it everyday your not pushing yourself hard enough. You should have sore muscles due to the damage you have done to not want to pick up the weight the day after. Let's not kid ourselves if your not sore then your body is coping with the demand and your not building anymore muscle ( which is how you raise your metabolic rate) and you could even be losing muscle. Muscle groups like your back and legs will not be hit hard enough to be sore and I suspect the only thing that aches Is your arms and possibly upper neck/upper trap.

Your walking daily is fantastic keep it up nothing beats a good 45 min walk. Hopefully you get back to the gyms if your only going to do cardio machines you might as well stick with ya kettle bell. 4000 calories damn! Best thing to have at Chinese is chick chow mein it's only 800 calories :) skip prawn crackers they are like 600-800 just themselves! And everything is is high cal or the portion size is for 2 not one. I battle against takeaway addiction myself always seem to have to have 1-3 a week. Damn fast food has got me hooked and I battle weekly to stop it.

Really hope I have a good week and can drop to 12.8/12.10 and waist to 37 currently 38

Good luck all :)

Hi Jsports,

I enjoyed reading your response - thanks for that! Hope you enjoyed your Indian take-away, and hope that your exams went well. I'm sure you'll be well on track again and losing the weight once more - you do a lot of great exercise and you always sound so motivated and full of energy.

Thanks for the comments about the Kettlebell exercises - I did attend a class originally where a trainer showed me how to use them. I have been struggling to do the full 30 minutes and I do have a rest from them one day a week. I find them challenging, but I think they are good.

At the moment I think I enjoy the walking the most. I either do a 50 minute walk or one that is longer (1 hour 40 minutes) depending on how much time I can allow myself.

When I'm in the gym I enjoy running on the treadmill for about 20 minutes and then cycling for 20 minutes and finally using the cross-trainer for 20 minutes. But of course I need to get there to do that, and I've not been for a few weeks now! I will try really hard to make it just once this week.

Have a great week, and hope you've done well in your exams so you can celebrate with a non-food related treat!

Lowcal :-)

Jsports profile image
Jsports in reply toZest

Hey lowcal thanks for your response. No my Indian sucked haha I threw half of it away and it still out on 2-3 lbs. the naan was good my chic tikka starter was nice, the curry and rice was awful and cheap so I literally had just under half. So I saved myself loads of calories because it was crap haha I took one bit of my onion bahjee and decided it was so soggy I threw both away.

Problem with kettle bells is that u never are lifting enough to stimulate muscle growth. For instance take your legs for example...I squat 150kg...your kettle bell is what 8kg? See what I mean. I'm not saying you squat 150 but even if you did 40kg you wouldn't use a 40kg kettle bell. So there are way better ways to hit certain muscle groups. Kettle is good for stability and core strength though so if that's what your after great. But if you after weight loss and muscle gain again loads of better classic exercises to do.

60 minute of steady state exercise...isn't going to do too much for you except improve your cv fitness abit. At least throw in using the rower...it's the best cardio piece of equipment in your gym :) use intervals in your workouts and your cardio will be 30-45 minutes. An hour is quite a lot to not get much out of it.

I. Now lost my Indian weight and back on track. Just off to gym now to do a light cardio session before my badminton in a few hours as I don't want to overdo it and not be able to play haha I have to be careful to as I still have shin splints.

Thanks for your kind words, the neuroscience exam actually went a lot better than the summer exam did and I really hope iv passed this time. I definetly feel like I may have done enough. :)

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply toJsports

Hi Jsports,

Thanks for that. I do like the rowing machine actually - must incorporate that when I next get to the gym!

Glad to hear your neuroscience exam went well, and like you say, hopefully you've passed it.

Hope you're enjoying your cardio session and Badminton.

Jsports profile image

Badminton was fantastic iv noticed that I can push off with more power so many drop shots and trick shots that had me flat footed I can now reach much easier. I stand on the service line so when I get flicked I can reach further back and jump smash more behind the shuttle so I'm really happy that I can see performance increases with the month I had :).

The way my strength and conditioning coach told me was that the bike is just working your quads, the eliptical trainer is working legs and arms with some core but for hip mobility your really getting a very small movement. Whereas rowing works the most muscle groups including your back and your getting a much higher range of motion in your hips. So better hips and better weight loss potential due to more energy expired...sounds good to me :) iv always known rower is best one but I didn't realise about the hip mobility bit :)

Morning all, I agree that reading your posts is really inspiring. I usually weigh on a Friday when I visit my mum, but I'm thinking of buying some scales for home & joining your Monday weigh in as I feel my motivation is dropping & I'm only on wk 4. I've lost around 6lbs so far so I am really chuffed but I want to break into the 11 stone bracket & I'm stupidly getting inpatient. Its back to the school runs this week & I'm intend to walk (unless it's pouring down) so I'm hoping that will make a difference. My goals are to stay focused, keep up with the Fitness App, not to give into evening treats & bed by 10.30pm (& of course to stop getting so inpatient!) x

Jsports profile image
Jsports in reply toBudsofMay74

If your that inpatient try and use that as motivation and increase your exercise, especially leg resistance liek body weight squats, lunges, leg press etc etc.. When I wanted results sooooo bad like you, I woke up at 4am the next day and did a 1 hour pylo session before even going to lectures. It's amazing what motivation and focus can do. Rather thatpn sit near your scales wanting change, just go and make it happen :) most people do exercise but they do not workout. Workout is just that....work. When you can't move a muscle group the following day-48hours that is how you know you have worked hard. Unfortunately most people don't work out anywhere near hard enough which is why gyms are full of people that have not really seen change in last 3-9months. i hope the next 1-2 weeks you will see your weight loss.

Hi BudsofMay74,

Really glad you've joined us today, and a warm welcome to you! I think it's natural for the motivation levels to drop occasionally, but don't let it get you down, and try to gain inspiration from others - you've set yourself some great goals for this week, and doing the school runs by walking sounds like a great start. I'm sure that will make a big difference.

Hoping you have a good week and look forward to catching up with you on Monday. Hope you find some scales in time.

Morning. My first day today. So far today I have done 20 mins yoga and I wanted to start doing the couch to 5k, however after a night out on Saturday for my birthday, I have blisters on 5 of my toes and couldnt face putting on my trainers, so took the dog for a brisk walk. My starting weight is 16st 11lbs. Good luck all.

Jsports profile image
Jsports in reply toLucy1918

Welcome first day timer :) what the hell did you do for your birthday haha have no fear, no excuses is here. That's right, if you can't work your feet then don't and work something else. Squats, pressups, planks, shoulder presses, bicep curls, tricep extensions, chair dips, bow, boat, lateral raises, hammer curls, chest flys, pull-ups, rows, dead lifts. Hopefully iv made my point :) when you can't work a muscle group work something else :) if you can work lower, work upper, if you can't work upper work lower, if you can't work upper or lower work your middle. Don't let your mind trick you into thinking your weaker than you are. Because with will and determination to lose weight over a tiny bit of pain or not doing something because it might be tough is one reason there are winners and there are losers. You just need to choose which side you wish to be on ;) hopefully this has inspired you to not sit on your bum and rest ya feet.

Welcome aboard :) good luck to you on your weight loss goals and enjoy the forum and support.

Ha ha. I worn a pair of shoes I have worn lots of times but for some reason I got blisters this time. I have been doing other exercises in place of starting to run, and reading all the different types of exercises you have mentioned I now have no excuse for not doing something. Thanks for the post.

Jsports profile image

And that is just a small number of exercises ;) im glad you feel you have no excuses because none of us really do have a good excuse to not do something. Look forward to seeing you progress over the coming weeks :)

Hi Lucy,

Really glad you've joined us. Welcome! Hope you had a lovely time on your Birthday. Sorry to hear about those blisters! Hopefully you'll be able to start the Couch to 5k soon. Your walk with your dog sounds like a good start, as well as the Yoga.

Have you seen the weight loss pages on the NHS site? They have some great structured advice and there is a 12 week plan there to follow if you want to.

Hope you have a great first week.

Hi local. Yes I have read through the NHS plan and that's what I am trying to stick to. I have also signed up for an other site where I can track my food and exercise daily and once I submit it each day it tells you how much you can loose in 5weeks if you stick to the calorie intake for that day. I find this has been a great boots so far.

That's great. Glad you've found a good place to track your food and exercise - that's a really useful thing and can be very motivating.

Really glad you're enjoying it so far, and hope your week is going well. :-)

Hi LowCal, at least you know where you are going wrong which is half the battle. I am sure you will do better this coming week.

I myself lost 0.6lb this week which was a little disappointing as I wanted to reach the 1 stone mark, but hopefully next week. However I did lose 2.1/2 inches from my waist which was great. I think the reason for not so much weight loss this week was too little exercise. Have had the Grandchildren quite a bit so not so much time. I have also found out they do acqua aerobics for the over 50's at our swimming pool so that will be my next plan of action.

Good luck to everyone for the coming week

x

Exercise can be done in 3 minutes and most home workouts can be done in 8-10 so rather than no time, I think it's a case of losing abit of focus on your exercises and using time as the exscuse. One of the bits of advice I give to peope is that if your watching tv exercise on the ad breaks. easy way to tally up your 10minutes. We have chances all day to do things like this we just need to seize the moment. When my boys are round and I'm playing with them on floor I like to do chest presses with them haha they love to climb and jump on me so sure I'm joining in and throwing them about abit. But exercise wise....I'm doing 10 reps per kid haha

BudsofMay74 profile image
BudsofMay74 in reply toJsports

I wish I had your energy levels Jsports!! Going thru a tough patch as the moment as my little one is teething & getting by on v little sleep. As a working mum of 5 energetic boys I'm constantly on the go so would say I do exercise but not in the conventional way (ie gym etc). Totally agree that eating choc/cakes/biscuits revokes the results excercise achieves & I will certainly replace my Choco fix for a low cal chocolate drink.

Jsports profile image
Jsports in reply toBudsofMay74

Or you could just not drink chocolate ;) never drink your calories, it's hard enough to keep your food intact without piling on calories from drinks. Yeah being a or parent in such a large household is certainly difficult. I'm sure you have quite a high non exercise (NEAT) regime but you won't be gaining any lean muscle and are just losing muscle especially as you age. It's proven that those who use resistance exercises lose muscle through degeneration at a slower rate than those who use cardio or none. I feel you just have to find 10 minutes to do things. Be creative....I do step ups when brushing my tv, I do jumping jacks when cooking or waiting for microwave. I do press ups in TV ads. I'm also an addicted gamer as other than sport iv moved around so much I don't really know anyone. So in between games I do bicep curls. When your cooking you can do so much. For instance calf raises...if you can stand still u can do an exercise in my opinion. Watching tv, playing games or waking up or going to bed 10 mins earlier all can give you the time you need. We just choose other things on top of it. Exercise is not a priority for so many people.

A friend from this board that iv met, iv got her to take the stairs down her 15 story building each morning and night. Sure she's short of I time lo, but she's now doing 200+ stairs daily, usually she just took the lift. Exercise is everywhere we can choose to do it, or not. As it said, google m100s and if you can't fit 3 minutes in your life then wow...I don't believe people don't have 3 minutes.

I think highlights hot chocolate is a nice treat for 40 calories!

Jsports profile image
Jsports in reply toPrin

3 different E numbers, glucose syrup, aspartame, salt. E407 the same stuff used in firefighting foam and sex lubricants. Saturated fat, carbs.

Highlights also have the highest salt content of all diet bedtime drinks.

Think I'll stick to water. Iv put on 2 and half stone in the last 5 years. Don't really think I deserve more treats as it's the treats that have got me where I am. Want a treat...go buy a book :)

Thanks for the advice Jsports but unfortunately there is only certain exercises I can do. I have diabetic neuropathy so have limited feeling in my feet. My hubby walks me around the park and the aqua aerobics means I will get some exercise without having to worry about my feet and balance.

I do appreciate your comments though

Jsports profile image
Jsports in reply tochristine58

No worries im sorry to hear you have troubles. If you read further up in the comments you will see that i have a post saying about someone and their blisters :) so if you cant work your feet you work upper or middle. Depending on your flexibility and mobility in your joints you need to be wise about what you can do. If you can bend your knees snd not move your feet you can do squats, glut bridges. If you struggle with hip mobility you can do calf raises and ofc anyting that is upper body, like rows, chest press, shoulder raises. If you really atruggle to balance use lighter weights for things over head. If thats not possible lie down when you do them which will work your core as well.

Most of the advice i give is for those without issues, but just use your head and listen to your body, you can accompdate your injuries and you can regress all movements based on ability. For instance im getting one member to do wall press ups because she cant bend her knee to do knee (girl pressups) on the floor. Makes the workout easier if you cant do it...but an easier workout is and will aleays be bette than no workout :)

Hi Christine58,

Congratulations on losing 0.6 pounds. That is great because it's a loss - I know you were hoping for more, but hopefully next week you'll be reaching the stone mark. The inches off your waist is really great.

The aquaerobics sounds like great exercise. Hope you enjoy that.

Have another great week ahead, and thanks also for your words of encouragement. Much appreciated. :-)

Hello there, don't be down beat, it sounds like you have a plan and are ready to make a change. I started today I'm following Rosemary Conley FAB diet, 1200 cals for first two weeks then 1400 for the following to weeks. I took measurements yesterday if my waist and hips etc and weighed myself, ouch that hurt!

Good luck

She also has a lot of fabulous meal idea's and ways to make normal food healthy so you don't loose out on anything. i lost half a stone in a few weeks early this year following her diet but sadly life got in the way and i went back to comfort eating, luckly i didn't pile all the weight back on!

Good luck with your journey! :)

Hopefully it won't be long before you have lost it all again and can achieve your goals.

Have a great week.

Evening Lowcal!

Well I faced the scales this morning, I wasnt going to as have not been very good over the last week however I weighed in at 12st 8 which was actually one down from last week, I was so much better facing it otherwise I would have been feeling fed up and would have continued eating rubbish!

My plan for this week......basically just watch what im eating and try very hard to avoid chocolate or crisps, up the excercise which is walking and the attempt at couch to 5k....drink my camomile tea at bedtime as when Im drinking normal tea I feel the need for a biscuit oh and to plan lunch for work every day so I dont resort to buying crisps and its so much better when I take in a low fat yogurt and fruit and a salad or wrap!!

Hope you have a good week Lowcal and manage to stick to your plan :-)

Blimey - did not get chance yesterday to look on HU. You have a busy site LC- great work for keeping everyone in the game.

As to me - stayed the same - which I am taking as an achievement - my weight yo toed up and down all week last week. I tried to cut everything out to soon and it played havoc with my blood sugar levels - and I just felt ill and tired. I also went to France at weekend and had an awesome time cycling in brittany - but also enjoyed French hospitality!!!

Having had a brilliant nights sleep - I now feel refreshed and ready to tackle the diet mountain. I am back to three times a week exercise of some sort and now need to sort calorie intake. Will work on reducing carbohydrate intake first. That should be easy - cut out wine.....

Hi Suzybenj,

Brilliant to hear you've stayed the same, after the previous yoyo-ing of your weight. Sorry to hear you were feeling ill and tired for part of the week, and hope you've got your blood sugar levels stabilised again now, so you can feel better!

Your cycling in Brittany over the weekend sounds really good. Great exercise too!

Tackling the diet mountain - that sounds like a challenge. You sound like you've got an excellent plan to tackle it, and good luck with your goals.

Wishing you a great week ahead.

Yeah I understand but trust me on this aim for 2lbs loss a week. If you want more you should be hitting 4hours exercise a day for 1lb loss a day., not cutting diet. This is a marathon not a sprint :)

If you want to cut carbs you need to do it slowly to give your body a chance to adapt. Cut out the processed carbs, like cereal, but keep things like starchy veg.

Hi lowcal, I'm late with weigh in again this week - but at least I have scales this week. Very frightening ones as they show all sorts of stats like metabolic age (oh dear!), visceral fat, hydration, ..... So, this week, after 3 weeks with no scales...... I'm still at the same weight as I was before! Not displeased with that and my excuses are that I spent a weekend with an aunt who offered many lovely dishes, but lots of carbohydrates with no alternatives! Also, a whole week with kitchen out of action due to a boiler being replaced and no kitchen floor! Ok, so I'm now back on plan and keeping away from the carbs and sugar again. Doing well so far this week - a manic day flying to Edinburgh and back yesterday and no resorting to carbs. Also, I'm getting out the Wii fit to get my metabolic age down!

Best wishes for you this week Lowcal. Slow but sure though on the weightloss and maintenance without gaining is still good!

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply toJlmitch

Hi Jlmitch,

Wow, your scales sound very thorough! Well done for managing to maintain your weight despite your Aunt's delicious carbohydrate-laden meals, and the week you spent without a kitchen floor and no boiler. That all sounds quite challenging!

Glad you're back on plan again, and hopefully your metabolic age is reducing as the day progresses!

I appreciate your comments - I do find it a bit of a constant struggle sometimes to try to keep on track, but sharing those experiences within this community is really helpful in terms of enabling me to stick closer to the track.

Wishing you a good week ahead and hope you enjoy having your kitchen back again.
