Last Monday I weighed 13 stone 6.0 pounds, and today I weigh 13 stone 8.4 pounds, so I've gained 2.4 pounds this week. I am quite disappointed to have gained, because I was really strict with myself this week and avoided desserts and had hardly any snacks, and yet I've gained weight. So I am wondering if the gain might be hormonal as I am pre-menstrual at the moment. I don't really know, but I'm hoping that if I stick to my goals, then the weight will come off again this week and I can be back in the weight loss zone...
Regarding exercise I've been for a walk on 6 days out of 7, and I've done the kettlebell 10 minute routine on 2 days out of 7. I've still not managed to get to the gym.
This week, I really hope to lose 2 pounds so I can get back on track.
How have you done this week? I hope you'll join me and share your experiences, and I wish you a good week ahead.

Hi lowcal, sorry to hear about your gain. I'm lucky I don't tend to put weight on when I'm premenstrual but notice my waist measurement increases by several centimetres that week instead!
I've managed to lose 3 pounds this week taking me to 12 stone 5 pounds. I'm really pleased with this and it showcs what I can do when I don't eat my exercise calories! The couch to 5k is still going well and I have noticed that my hips are getting slimmer as I am into a dress that I have never been able to get over my hips before!
Congratulations on losing 3 pounds this week, that's really great. Great that you've also noticed a difference in your hips - and can fit into that dress now. Really great. Hope you enjoy wearing it.
Well done also on keeping with the Couch to 5k.
Thanks for your encouraging words - I am just going to try to keep on track and hope that the weight will finally come off again next week.
Hi Ruth, I am just following the nhs 12 week plan (I'm now on week 19!) and am also now following the couch to 5k programme on the nhs choices website to get my exercise. I am trying to stick to 1400cal per day and generally manage it.
Thanks catch, I'll have a closer look at the plan. I glanced at the begining and thought it was just calorie counting so have just tried to do that.
C25K really is wonderful. I did it a few years ago and was so chuffed at how much progress I made - sadly I have something odd going on with my knee and hip and I realise that running only makes them worse.
Hi Lowcal, sorry about your gain I have also gained 2lb this week but as I drank my own body weight in wine on Friday night I shouldn't be surprised sober September must now become 'sober tober' The exercise is going well but I'm back at uni now which I know from last year will make it a little harder to maintain.. Good luck for the next weigh in x Kate
Sorry to hear you've also gained some weight this week - at least you know how you did it, and I'm sure that having a 'sober tober' will help! Great to hear your exercise is going well. Hope you can keep it up whilst being back at Uni. Hopefully they have some good facilities.
Thanks for your encouragement, and let's hope we have a loss at the next weigh-in. Good luck!
Sorry to hear about your gain - but you know - I think it could be the pre-menstrual thing. Not sure if you remember but I put on 5lb last week and yes I did eat badly that week but it was also my period and this week I've lost over 4lbs (which I certainly didn't expect from how I'd eaten) - so fingers crossed it was a pre-menstrual quirk and the same will happen for you.
Yes, I do remember that you put on 5 pounds last week, and it's great to hear you've lost 4 pounds this week. I sincerely hope the same will happen for me.
Congratulations on your loss and yes, let's keep on track!
I'm sorry to hear you gained some this week! Its never a nice feeling, especially when you know you've stuck to your calories and done plenty of exercise! Keep it up and hopefully you will lose them again in time for the next weigh in!
I am feeling a little better with myself this morning though. I was really worried stepping on the scales. Not because I felt like I'd had a bad week, but because the last few weigh ins I haven't lost a thing.
This morning I'm weighing in at 12st 6lbs so only a loss of 1lb but still better than nothing or a gain. It just feels nice to be back losing and to weigh the lightest I have in a good few years!
I did do a fair bit of exercise this week too so I was hoping for a bit more of a loss. I walked 4 days out of 7 and danced on my Wii games for the other 3 days! I ate really well, no snacking and only had a treat on saturday (6 bourbon biscuits with a cup of tea!)
Here's to another good week for all the losers and hopefully a better week for everyone else!
Thanks for the encouraging words. I always think it's a danger point when I've been sticking to things but failing to lose the weight - sometimes I think 'what the heck' and get tempted to eat something highly calorific, but thankfully this time I'm just 'sticking with it' in the confidence that it should hopefully go down again next week.
Congratulation on losing 1 pound - it is a good amount of weight to lose in a week, and moves you 1 pound closer to your goal. Brilliant to hear you're weighing the lightest you've been for a good few years, that is really great.
I'm sorry you have gained this week, LowCal, but I admire the way you have faced it and look forward to better results next week. I've been away with a friend for the last four days so was apprehensive about this morning's weigh-in because of the junky food that has been consumed! Here's the grim details - one and a half pounds gained even though we walked for miles every day over the Welsh mountains.
I have a new goal in mind now. Eldest granddaughter has got engaged and will be getting married in September next year. A whole year to lose 28 pounds! If I can just average half a pound a week for 12 months I should reach my target and have the treat of a lovely new outfit for the wedding.
Well done to those who have maintained their weight loss this week and high hopes for all of us who didn't - but intend to keep trying
Sorry to hear you've gained this week, but you have been away for a break, and I think that's a relatively small gain in the circumstances, and I feel sure you'll soon get rid of that weight again now you're back in your normal routine. Hope you enjoyed your break, and those walks in the Welsh mountains - sounds lovely!
Great to hear you've got such a lovely goal to work towards - and it sounds like a manageable goal to achieve in a year.
Well ill start off by saying that Im really surprised by my weigh in today, but in a good way. This is because in the last couple weeks, due to unforseen circumstances, I found myself in possession of 6 grams of weed. Long story short my friend gave me it because he was quitting dealing as he's starting uni and doesn't want to get distracted... anyway, he gave me what was left of his supply and I out of nowehere found that I had come into possession of a stupid amount of weed that I spent the last couple of weeks burning through. (literally) I guess its important to clarify that I dont usually smoke quantities like this on my own. I only really smoke when im with my friends but since I had it anyway, I ended up using it to cope with the break up with my girlfriend who moved to Newcastle for uni. And since I decided to defer my place at edinburgh uni until next year I didn't have my friends to hangout with either as they moved across the country to their uni's. Due to these factors I ended up smoking it all basically on my own and well.... with great weed comes great munchies, and I would estimate that ive eaten my bodyweight in junkfood these last two weeks.
Well last week I ran out of weed and when the drug haze lifted I realised that I had jumped from 10 st 7 lb to 11 st 2lb. This was pretty shocking but honestly what I expected. Yet it was there and then that I decided I would get back on track and, after only a week of eating around 1300 calories and jogging each morning I have already managed to come back down to 10 st 7lb!
I thought I'd share with you all, and especially to any younger members of our great forum that no matter what the setback, you can always come back and enjoy fresh successes. And honestly, I felt better this week than I did when I did the last two weeks trying to cope by blocking out the painful reality of my girlfriend leaving with weed and junkfood. I feel alot better and know that even if I stumble I will not fail.
It sounds like you've been on quite a journey, and there have been many changes in your life that you've been adjusting to. Congratulations on getting a place at Edinburgh University, and hopefully the year will pass by positively for you so you can look forward to starting your course and making some new friends there.
Well done on sticking to your calorie allowance and doing the regular jogging, and great to hear you lost your excess weight. Like you say, you've come back from the various setbacks you had and you can enjoy your success. Well done.
Hope you have another great week ahead and that you enjoy the healthy changes you've made in your life.
I don't have hormonal weight gain but a hormonal plateau, plus the bloating. It's disappointing but goes quickly I'm sure next week will be better.
I have lost 2lbs this week, I'm very happy after staying the same last week. I now weigh 15st 8lbs. I really want to lose the next 1lb so I can be 15 1/2 stone. I've had a very busy weekend and not exercised so the plan for this week is to enjoy the cooler weather, do more aerobics and lose that 1lb then i'll weigh less then I did when I finished uni 8 years ago.
Congratulations on losing 2 pounds this week - that's really great! You're so close now to being 15 and a half stone - maybe next week! Hope you enjoy the extra aerobics this week.
Thanks for your comments and encouragement.
Hope you have a great week ahead, and that you'll be the lightest you've been since finishing Uni very soon!
I've been meaning to ask about doing kettlebell, do you enjoy it? I tend to do exercises that I enjoy and they turn out to be not proper workouts, like i'll put just dance on so I am exercising but it doesn't seem like it. Is kettlebells fun? Also, is it very tiring, do you feel like you've had a workout at the end of it? I'm looking for new stuff to try and thought this might be worth a go but wanted a bit more info about it first.
I'm not sure that I regard doing the Kettlebell exercises as 'fun' - but I like the fact that I can feel 'stronger' as a result of doing the exercises. I've noticed that carrying shopping isn't as difficult as it would have been if I'd not been doing Kettlebell exercises. I definitely feel it is 'strenuous' exercise - because I only ever do 10 minutes in one session, and at the end of 5 minutes of that I find I am sweating and it is an 'effort' to continue for the remaining 5 minutes. But I regard that as positive, because I think I'm getting a good work-out in that short length of time. My kettlebell weighs 8kg, and I only have the one bell. I found some exercises online, and just do a few of those.
I am really pleased to have bought a kettle bell, because I think it is good exercise. I have put music on to exercise to - and that makes doing the Kettlebell exercises more 'fun' but in itself, I don't particularly think it's fun. But I'm really pleased I bought one and I hope to keep using it more regularly.
Maybe you could try using one at a gym first, to see if you like it, or borrow one from someone for a while? Or just try lifting one in a sport's shop and see what it feels like.
If you do get one, then I hope you get on ok with it.
Lowcal
Good morning Lowcal, I hope you don't mind this newbie joining in your Monday weigh-in....
Last Monday my weight was 72.6kg - 11st 6.1lb & my weight today is 72.3kg - 11st 5.4lb, so I've lost 0.3kg - 0.7lb...
I'm quite happy with this, as I've recently been on holiday.
Your weight gain may be water retention, if you've eaten food high in sodium your body retains water in order to dilute it & that can take a few days to dissipate.... Try drinking plenty of water to flush your system & you'll find the weight will drop away in no time.
Keep up your walking & maybe add some more strength work into your routine, because your increased muscle mass will help you burn more calories.
You are very welcome to join us, and thanks for doing so! You are very welcome!
You have made a great start - losing 0.7 pounds is great, especially as you've recently been on holiday. I often gain quite a bit of weight after being on holiday. Hope you enjoyed your holiday and that you're ok about being back in your usual routine.
Actually I think you have hit the nail on the head in terms of mentioning a high sodium meal - that was something I had one lunchtime last week, and I shot up 4 pounds overnight after that one meal. Thankfully I had lost 2 of those pounds by the time today's weigh-in came round, but am still 2.4 pounds up on last Monday. I will try drinking more water.
I definitely want to focus on increasing my kettlebell exercises, as I only do 10 minutes and I have only managed a couple of days of doing that this week. I hope to do better over the coming week.
Thanks for your comments - really helpful. Hope you have a good week ahead.
Really glad you've joined us - welcome to you! Best of luck with your first week, and it's great to hear you've joined the gym and have set yourself a small challenge - hope it goes really well and that you enjoy it.
Have you seen the NHS weight loss pages? There is a 12 week structured plan there which has some really good advice that may help.
Hi Lowcal, sorry to hear about your gain, I think you are probably right about it being related to your time of the month, I know I usually put a little weight on around then. I've gained 1lb this week, I'm disappointed but not at all surprised. I have stuck to gluten and diary free well this week but I've been eating lots of gluten free treats which are no doubt high calorie! This week my aim is to eat less treats and to get to RPM at least 3 times, ideally 4.
Sorry to hear you've gained as well this week, but at least it's only 1 pound! You've got your goal in mind to eat less treats and to get to RPM (I have no idea what that stands for by the way!) - what does it stand for?
Anyway, wishing you a great week ahead and hopefully a loss next week.
Hi Lowcal, sorry about your gain. This weight thing is so difficult to understand sometimes!
I had a week at home last week and too much wine/too many holiday treats has resulted in a 1lb gain for me. That one is at least easy for me to understand!
I need to get a grip - it's too easy to slip back into bad habits or not quite have the commitment that we had when we made the decision to start losing weight! When nearly at goal commitment I seem to start slacking and taking short cuts/make excuses!
I've given myself a good telling off and hope to have my commitment back now for the last 5lb!
Yes, I agree it can be difficult to understand on occasions such as these...! But glad you know how you gained your pound this week, and I'm sure you'll get it off again really soon! I'm sure you'll be back on track to tackle those remaining 5 pounds.
Evening all oh dear we are not having a good week I am here to add another nail in this weeks coffin, I have managed to gain 2.5lbs over the weekend had been around 10 9 or less all week, it just makes me realise how quickly we can gain weight! so I need to put that right this week, would like to see 10.9 by next Monday, not easy as I have lots of social this week on the plus side in the Asda George sale I spent £3 on a new tea dress (so non stretchy) size 8 I am going to see if I can sew the label on the outside! Hope everyone has a good week
Sorry to hear you've gained as well - it really does seem to be relatively easy to gain sometimes. You made me laugh when you mentioned the possibility of sewing the SIZE 8 label on your new dress on the outside - brilliant value by the way at £3. I love George clothes. Stylish and affordable - good combination!
I'm sure you'll lose your extra weight again this week and you'll be back on track again - although as you say, it is challenging with lots of social occasions, so good luck!
Hi LowCal, Really sorry to hear of your gain this week, but as you say it could certainly be that time of the month. Fortunately or unfortunately I can't blame that if I do gain anything.
However I am pleased to say I lost 0.6lb this week which takes me to a total loss of nearly 18lb in 9 weeks. Also another 1.1/2" from my middle. I really want to get to 12.1/2 stone by the middle of November for my Ruby wedding so intend to up my exercise this week as didn't do much last week.
I am really pleased to hear you've lost 0.6 pounds this week - that's great, and your progress over the 9 weeks is really good! Great to hear that you're also noticing differences on the tape measure too.
It's great that you've got such a positive goal to work towards - your Ruby Wedding is defnitely a great occasion! Good luck with upping your exercise this week and hope you have a great week ahead.
After your invite to your Monday weigh-in here i am (still Monday, just!)
Got weighed this afternoon during my 1-2-1 session with the NHS bloke (week 6 of 12), and i've lost 1lb this week. A bit disappointed as I felt I'd been really strict but i know lack of exercise this week has been a problem. But the good news is that 1lb, makes 14lb in 6 weeks, so 1 stone down, only about another 7 to go or there abouts!). He even printed out a 1 stone loss certificate for me! Not sure i'll be hanging it anywhere too prominent just yet! Well done all losers this week & chin up those who didnt - new week, start again.
Really glad you've joined us for the Monday weigh-in. Even if you'd popped in on Tuesday, you'd still be welcome!
Congratulations on your 1 pound loss. You've made the stone mark in 6 weeks, and that's amazing. Great that your NHS bloke printed out a certificate - that's really nice.
Yes, it's a new week, and let's keep our chins up and look forward to weight losses next week!
week 5 - im a bit off the monday weight in because i forgot to weight myself yesterday morning so did it today instead. Last week i weighed 13.5.8 this week i weigh 13.1.6.. a loss of 4.2lb and a total loss of 11.8lb.. creeping up to that first stone mark! actually rather proud of myself, so far this has been a lot easier than i thought it would be. because im loosing weight its giving me an incentive not to over indulge because i dont want to undo all the work ive done. Im also starting to get the comments that people can notice im loosing weight!
Wow, you've lost quite a lot this week. Great that you are getting some comments from other people who are noticing your weight loss. Hope you're feeling healthy and enjoying your new slimmer figure. You're getting close to your stone loss - well done for keeping on track and hope you have another good week ahead.
Same same same weight- which probably isn't bad considering what I consumed last week.
I have sort have started this week with new resolve - but already crumbling under the weight (ha ha) of life events and work being particulary stressful. Will try to get to a better head around things today- but starting the day with a difficult phone call to do with rather silly son - not great.....
I really hope your phone call with your son goes ok this morning. At least you know it's going to be challenging, and hopefully you'll handle it better than you anticipate.
Well done for maintaining your weight despite eating whatever it was you ate this week! You sound like you were anticipating a gain, so it must be lovely not to have done so.
Good luck with gathering that extra 'resolve' you are hoping for this week, despite those stresses of work and other factors. Hopefully you'll have a good week ahead and can then congratulate yourself on having got through it all.
HI everyone, I'm only a day late - terrible indigestion & bloating yesterday, just didn't feel up to it! I think I've proved to myself that low fat & dairy free is the way to go... anyway, today I weigh 13 st 3 lb, back on track. Strangely, I've had lots of positive comments from people about still loosing weight when I wasn't - has anyone else experienced this? I have a physio friend who says that your body shape has to change as your body redistributes the fat stores.
Sorry to hear you weren't feeling great yesterday, and hope you feel better today! At least you've found that low fat and dairy free is working for you. Glad to hear you're back on track. Congratulations for that! It's interesting what you said about the physio mentioning about the re-distribution of fat stores - I've not experienced what you have yet, because I'm still trying to lose weight. But I'll certainly bear it in mind and see if I can notice anything when I get closer to my goal weight. Would be interested to hear other's experiences.
Hi Lowcal, don't worry, my weight rockets every time premenstrual! I find that drinking more water helps. I am now in the middle of my half marathon training, I have noticed that since I have been doing weight training 3 times a week, that I measure smaller but that my weight stays the same. I have decided not too worry so much about the weight now and to test my progress on how my clothes feel on me. I am really a different person from starting this journey in May, and I find it fabulous that you and many others are still here too. But it takes time. Guess what...yesterday I ran 11km! At the moment I have decided not to calorie count because I feel that I know how to be sensible and listen to my body. Even so, I take it a week at a time and I won't allow myself to go back to the life I used to have. But now my focus is not so much on food, but on living a happy life. I have decided that I am going to start a business. I have confidence since I have been successful with this area in my life...and this is now spilling over into other areas. I hope next week you have a good week. As ever, you are an inspiration for me!
Thanks so much for your encouraging words - I really appreciate it. It's great that you're doing your half marathon training, and well done for running 11km yesterday, that is inspiring!
Great to hear you're thinking of starting a business - and that your confidence is developing as a result of your successes to date. That's so great.
I am just sticking to my goals for this week, and I currently feel confident that I will have a loss on the scales on Monday, as long as I continue without too many temptations.
Wishing you another great week, and enjoy your half marathon training!
Hi Lowcal, I'm sorry that I'm so late in adding my weight it's been a really hectic week! I'm pleased to report I've lost another pound. Only 3lbs to go till I can say I've lost my first stone. We are going to a silver wedding party at the end of October so I'd love to reach that goal by then. I'm sorry to hear that you have gained but I definitely was heavier when I had my periods, I haven't had a period since my son was born (hallelujah) so not looking forward to all that pre menstral stuff again!
Great to hear from you! Congratulations on losing a pound this week, that's really great. You're getting close to your first stone, and having your goal of the Silver Wedding party is a great incentive to achieve it by then.
Sorry to hear you've been stuck on the same weight for the last couple of months. I would be interested to know a bit more information - such as whether you're close to the healthy BMI for your height - because if you are close, then maybe that is one reason why you're not losing anything.
Are you restricting your calorie intake? Are you perhaps allowing certain treats to creep in and not be accounted for? Even a small amount of sauce can add several calories and can make the difference between maintaining and losing weight. I find that using 'myfitnesspal' as a tracker of calories and exercise is really helpful.
Are you exercising as well as trying to have a healthy eating regime? Adding in extra exercise or just exercising regularly can help to tone up and lose some weight.
I have started to cut out desserts, and am finding that is helping me to lose weight. I haven't missed them too much - and I am actually enjoying my meals more as a result!
The fact is that you haven't 'gained' weight for the past couple of months, and you're infact maintaining your current weight - so that's much better than gaining any. Stick with things and you should hopefully lose eventually, but maybe you need to look carefully at what you're doing, and see if there are any tweaks you can make to get the scales moving again.
Of course, if you're already in the healthy BMI range, then maybe you don't need to lose anymore?
I'm new to this website, but I thought I'd post on here as a way of keeping myself motivated. I've been reading some of your posts, well done to everyone and keep up the hard work! It's worth it!
I began my weight loss journey 2 months ago and in that time have managed to lose 1 stone! - Yay!!! I have another 3 stone to lose until I reach my target/healthy weight. My aim is lose 1 or 2 lbs per week but there have been times over the past 2 months where I have lost more (e.g. 1 week I lost 5 lbs. Eek!) but I think that was due to the shock to the system for my body with the sudden exercise and the healthy eating!
Welcome! Great to hear your weight loss progress over the past 2 months - wow - you've lost a stone, that is so great! Well done!!!
I agree that losing 1 to 2 pounds per week is really healthy, but like you say - occasionally an extra amount does happen here and there. I gained this week, but I'm looking forward to tomorrow, as I am sure I will have lost weight this week.
Wishing you lots of success with losing your final stones - looking forward to hearing how you're getting on in future posts.
I'll be posting a thread again tomorrow for the Monday weigh-in.
Ooh hope this week is better, this is week one for me - 12 stone 6 and I am also hoping to lose around 1 - 2 lbs a week. I bloat and gain running up to my period so maybe that is the problem. Either way, don't give up
