I did have a course of ferrous fumarate last year which bought my ferritin to 30, the very bottom number in their range for ferritin which i did point out to GP but they suggested having that retested in 6 months (6 months is up next month)

Regarding my FBC results above, in November 2024 after finishing the ferrous fumarate, my

Mean cell volume was 95 fl [80 - 100] today's result is 86 [80-100] so that's gone down

Mean cell hemoglobin was 29.2 pg [27 - 32] today's result is 28.5 pg [27 -32] so that's gone down

Haemotrocit was 0.443 [0.36 - 0.47] today's result is 0.414 [0.36 - 0.47] so that's gone down

Red Blood Cell Count has gone up though, that was 4.65 [3.9 -5.4] today's result is 4.8 [3.9 - 5.4]

Haemoglobin concentration was 136 [115 - 165] and today's result is 137 [115 - 165]

So no idea what it means when MCV, MCH and Haemotrocit have all gone down but Red Blood Cell Count & Haemoglobin Concentration have both gone up

B12 and folate are needed to make new blood cells. Iron is needed to make the haemoglobin to go in those cells. MCV is a measure of the size of cells. Haematocrit is sort of a measure of the size of the cells when used along with the cell count (it’s literally a measure of the amount of cell vs amount of plasma in your blood). MCH is the amount of haemoglobin within each cell.

My interpretation, not a doctor though. If your red cell count and haemoglobin have gone up then your B12 and folate are doing okay and you had sufficient iron to make some haemoglobin for each cell. However your MCV/MCH and haematocrit have dropped, so your cells are smaller and have less haemoglobin in them (but there’s more of them so your total Hb is better). If your B12 and folate results come back as good it would suggest your iron still needs improvement, but you’re doing better than you were.

If your B12 and folate were always optimal then I’m talking absolute bunkum and shouldn’t be allowed near a keyboard.
