I am an American that moved to the UK in the last 18 months.
I have been diagnosed with underactive thyroid for many years now. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto syndrome. I was first treated with levothyroxine and had so many side effects, random body aches and pains, brittle nails, thinning hair, weight gain, etc.
My doctor at the time, allowed me to try Armor Thyroid and it was amazing. I took it for more than 12 years and had wonderful results. So side effects and my labs stayed stable for years.
I moved to the UK and brought a six month supply of my medication with me. At sone point, I had to set up an appointment with the local GP. She told me she was not authorized to prescribe NP thyroid. She referred me to a endocrinologist consult and started me on Levothyroxine.
I’ve been on this for 5 months. All of my symptoms from previous use have returned. The endocrinologist consultant mailed a letter to my home simply stating, the NHS does not provide NP Thyroid.
My question is if I go with a private doctor, would I have access to this medication?
Thank you in advance!

Here’s link for how to request Thyroid U.K.list of private Doctors emailed to you, but within the email a link to download list of recommended thyroid specialist endocrinologists who will prescribe NDT (or T3 alongside levothyroxine)
Get FULL thyroid and vitamin testing before consultation
Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
NDT or T3 ….day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day, with last dose approximately 8-12 hours before test
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test
If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal
IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 3-5 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results
In days before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12 if last test result serum B12 was below 500 or active B12 (private test) under 70
You can purchase Thyroid s NDT online I have no thyroid and have been using it for 9 years now. It's reasonably priced too. No Doctor or Prescription needed.
I have never seen an endocrinologist and I have been taking levothyroxine for 20 yrs. My doctor told I could lose weight even with an under active thyroid. I did a few years ago but have regained the weight. I have aches and pains, mostly from arthritus.
