Blood levels ok?

FoxyTed profile image
13 Replies

hi all,

Are these levels of folate and iron ok as ferritin appears good

Iron 16 (11-32)

Folate 10.7 (3-26)

Ferritin 114

I have raised MCH & MCV but low MCHC had PA test - negative. Other bloods were ok. Doc is not concerned……Could this be down to thyroid as I still have symptoms and due a blood test soon.

Thanks!

Iron is low

Iron  16  (11 - 32) 23.8%

was CRP level tested

High CRP will falsely raise ferritin

Folate needs improvement

No B12

No vitamin D

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once to see if your hypothyroidism is autoimmune

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Significant minority of Hashimoto’s patients only have high TG antibodies (thyroglobulin)

NHS only tests TG antibodies if TPO are high

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Thank you slow I appreciate you replying. I did think those were bit low. I will have to have a print out from docs for the whole picture as can’t rely on ‘normal’ as you know. Not sure if crp included.

I’m due private bloods for thyroid shortly. I am always on good b complex so my b12 was skewed, I stopped it for 2 weeks to get T test a while back and the fatigue was much worse! I don’t think stopping it for 4 months is an option.

Could I take some iron? If so which one ? My heart rate fast especially mornings and on any little exertion- no heart trouble just mild mitral murmur. Headaches have increased and no motivation so unlike me, hissing in ear.

Thanks!!

You only need stop B complex 3-5 days before ALL tests

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 3-5 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

endocrinenews.endocrine.org...

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12 if last test result serum B12 was below 500 or active B12 (private test) under 70

Could I take some iron

Get full test

Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing.

It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron

Test early morning, only water to drink between waking and test. Avoid high iron rich dinner night before test

If taking any iron supplements stop 3-5 days before testing

I’m confused, so it’s ok if iron on low side if other counts are ok? How about the MCH MCV and MCHC (mine were slightly over range as in my first question.

Much appreciated

High MCV & MCH holds a clue to the cause of your FBC outliers.

These high can point to Low B12/folate being a factor, even if you don’t have pa. Alternatively, iron deficiency may actually be the main driver.

Remember those FBC measures are referring to the health of your red blood cells - which need both b and iron to be healthy.

So we really would want to see a full iron panel and your b12 result to help answer your question. We like to see folate towards 20, but yours doesn’t look dire nonetheless.

Your iron is low. But red blood cells can lag 90+ days before the effect if low iron is evident.

Hi and thanks. I will have to get a print out from GP surgery. I take a good b complex everyday for years now to keep my folate b 12 up.

There’s something not right. I had an IV b12, folate etc 3 weeks ago and it really helped me, my heart rate slowed and my mood & energy lifted but it declined again after 2 weeks and it’s too expensive to get done again. Looking back at Medicheck’s last August my MCH MCV & MCHC were same but my folate was 23 and iron 25.3 …so much better! and now iron 16 and folate 10. ..

No use going by b12 as I’m always supplementing. I take digestive enzymes due to low pancreatic enzymes and stomach acid.

I am due my thyroid bloods done shortly, I started beginning of Jan on armour.

It’s a nightmare, I feel so low at times, fast heart rate, have daily headaches and little energy. Not much help from doctors as within range.

Much appreciated

I have had the same symptoms as you for a couple of years, plus more ongoing. By chance I listened to a podcast on long Covid by Dr. Andrew Klein… I followed his advice and slowly improved… I googled him and was amazed by his easy approach and common sense.. u-tube videos also an easy watch…. Hope this helps.

Hi Bulgari, can I ask what you did following his advice please? Any help would be great!

I had a b12, folate 3 weeks ago and it really helped but wore off and I can’t afford to keep getting. Tk you

Serum iron is pretty fast moving - up and down. Mine went from below range to above range in 5 weeks once, and even an iron rich meal the night before can impact it. So don’t worry about that.

As for b12 injection - I know nothing about that - but assume you had b12 issues then? That could explain your FBC.

I haven’t looked at you last posts - but feeling low, fast heart rate, headaches and little energy describes me to a T when I was under replaced : )

How are your free Ts?

Share a full iron panel when you have one. Also - you always need a CRP-hs every time you get ferritin done.

Lastly, it’s both anecdotal and scientific- a virus can trigger all sorts of stuff and it can linger and have knock in effects.
