I am a healthy 76 year old female and due to acid reflux and stomach symptoms I have just had an endoscopy but I wasn't able to speak to the consultant after the test. I was given a Gastroscopy Report as follows, but no explanation, so have had to resort to Chat GPT!
'Glycogenic acanthuses in the oesophagus. No hiatus hernia or active oesophagitis. Some atrophic change in the stomach with active erosive gastritis in mid body. Biopsies taken. Duodenum normal. Urease test negative' - which I think is the test for H Pylori infection.
I have been give a course of Esomeprazole 20 mg and will see the consultant in 4 weeks time for the biopsy results.
I am trying to work out what the cause is as I don't take Nsaids, hardly drink, have little stress, eat healthily and take lots of exercise. I read that it is quite common that Hashimoto's can cause autoimmune gastritis. I am wondering if taking liquid thyroxine might be exacerbating the condition and whether taking Tirosint instead could help? I also read that my dose may be too high so I will get a full thyroid test done. Has anyone else had this diagnosis and is it possible to cure with the right treatment and diet and how do they diagnose autoimmune gastritis? My daughter, who is in to Functional Medicine, is keen for me to try BPC 157 peptide therapy, but I feel I should stick to the PPIs until the gut is healed. I would be very grateful for any comments. Thanks.

Being hypo (under medicated) can result in acid reflux due to low stomach acid and/or gluten intolerance
as you are on liquid levothyroxine do you normally split as two doses
exactly what vitamin supplements are you taking
Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test
But on liquid levothyroxine split dose ……with last dose 12 hours before test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
If also on T3 ….day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day, with last dose approximately 8-12 hours before test
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test
If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal
Have you considered if you could have b12 deficiency- one of the symptoms can be various forms of gastritis. The HU Pernicious Anaemia site has lots of info.
Thanks so much for your replies. My tests were last done in June 24 and I'm about to book a private complete thyroid test and vitamin levels. I forgot to mention that I am gluten and lactose free being intolerant to both. Like so many I feel so much better for it. I am wondering if I should give up dairy completely as at the moment I can eat small amounts of lactose free cheese and milk with no ill effects.
The supplements I am taking are:
L Glutamine, Sodium ascorbate Vit C, MSM, Liposomal Vitamin B Complex (Pink Tribe), Vitamin D3+K 2 4000IU, Selenium 200ug, Zinc picolinate 22mg, Magnesium complex, S. Boulardii. Any other suggestions?
I have always had high B12 levels but understand that taking PPIs can affect that. I will certainly try splitting my liquid thyroxine and I read that drinking water afterwards could help, so have started that. I only take a low dose of thyroxine (75mcg) and no T3. My GP said I was overdosing as my TSH level was 0.02, but that level seems to suit me. I also read that overdosing on thyroxine can cause gastritis. All will be revealed when I get my tests done next week.
Thank you so much for your helpful comments and any more comments welcome.
Does your B complex contain B12? If so your blood levels could be high but your system isn't absorbing it. You would need to stop supplementing quite a while before testing. I'll try and find the advice I was given and add it.
Found it RedApple provided the following for me recently.
According to TheB12society.com:
'You need to be CLEAR of any any supplements containing vitamin B12, and/or foods and drinks with unnatural levels of B12, such as those fortified with or containing concentrated levels of B12 for AT LEAST 4 MONTHS BEFORE TESTING SERUM B12.' theb12society.com/diagnosing
