Gastritis/severe acid reflux

I have had severe sometimes non stop all day long acid reflux which at times makes me gag like I am going to vomit but I never do. My GP thinks this is gastritis which I was initially given lansoprazole for but this has made no difference. I have now been told it could be h pylori gastritis but have to stop taking anti acids for 2 weeks before I can be tested for this. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? It’s not just acid reflux after meals it’s constant throughout the whole day and sometimes at night. This started after my thyroid went from being over medicated to under again within a short space of time. I did read this could be low stomach acid due to hypothyroidism. However, I did a week on digestive enzymes with HCL and I ended up with severe stomach pains afterwards.

First thing is to get FULL Thyroid and vitamin testing done

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Ask GP to test vitamin levels

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

By the sound of it you need an endoscopy.

I'm sure your GP will be quite happy to keep experimenting on you and making absurd and cruel suggestions like "stop taking antacids for two weeks before a test" but you really should push for a referral to get someone to actually look at your gut.

Some links you might find helpful. They involve a lot of reading but are worth the effort in my opinion. At least I had a much better understanding of how the gut worked after reading them all myself.

Don’t wait for the class-action lawsuit against Lansoprazole for causing stomach cancer!

Get off that crap. My great-grandfather was an MD(🥴)

and he routinely” prescribed “

good old baking duds for heart burn/gastritis. The dosing is easy:

dissolve 1/4-1/2 tsp into 3-6 ounces water and drink as needed to relive the burn. It’s simple chemistry! Acids and bases (salts) are opposites and can neutralize each other. Stopping acid with the “blockers” is asking for trouble.

Just sayin.

Luci do some research on Mastic Gum, it helped my stomach problem and they do say that there is evidence it can kill the H-Pilori bug too.
