NHS England's Specialist Pharmacy Service has published a new (fully updated) page re B12 deficiency in pregnancy.

Vitamin B12 deficiency: treatment during pregnancy

Last updated 27 November 2024 · See all updates

sps.nhs.uk/articles/vitamin...

Have to say, I was somewhat surprised at this sentence:

A less frequent maintenance dose of 1mg twice-yearly can be administered for dietary vitamin B12 deficiency.

And Anton Petrov mentions absorbing B12 via the lungs - specific point starts at 5:08 to save watching it all:

Evidence Shows We Can Absorb Vitamins and Minerals From the Air

Of course, even if we can absorb it via our lungs - whether or not we have Pernicious Anaemia - any impairment to enterohepatic recirculation would imply the dose required would be much greater. And total safe lung-deliverable dose might be less than is required.

Hi helvella,

I'd never heard of the specialist pharmacy service before so out of curiosity I looked it up and searched for hypothyroidism. No mention of FT3 at all from the two references I checked regarding treatment guidelines.

(Sorry not trying to sabotage your post!)

Not a problem at all. It was rather more out of interest than strictly topical.

The SPS will simply refuse to communicate if you try to contact them, (No prizes for guessing how I know that...)

I registered long ago. And every time I have tried to contact them, they have huffily said they are for professionals only.

One thing that almost never gets a mention regarding B12 and pregnancy...

Low or deficient B12 can have the same awful results on the fetus as a lack of folate in pregnancy i.e. neural tube defects, and hydrocephalus - at least its been found in rats as far as the hydrocephalus goes.
