salty taste

I have had an unpleasant salty taste in my mouth for the last year. I have seen the dentist, ENT, neurologist, taste specialist, I’ve had blood tests, brain MRI and a lip biopsy. None of this has produced any answers. In the meantime I have been hypothyroid for the last nearly 30 years. I take levothyroxine 150mcg daily. My bloods are monitored regularly and I occasionally need to make small adjustments in dose. My T3 is on the low side but whenever I try to supplement with T3 I get headaches. Also tried armour thyroxine in the past which messed up my levels and also gave me a headache.

I haven’t seen a consultant for many years.

Questions are:

has anyone managed to resolve this taste issue?

could it be due to low T3? But I have always had this so why is my taste effected now?

Is there a good consultant in London that anyone can recommend that will consider taste changes as a symptom of thyroid disease?

thank you

Have a look at a GB support website called Abscent…in part for those of us who lost the sense of smell and or taste perhaps due to brain damage but also, as me, Long Covid. There are also people who have ‘odd’ senses of smell/ taste, perhaps you’ll find someone there like you, they have members worldwide.

I had this early part of year and my Aldosterone was just over the top of range. The salty taste could be this. Mine has now lowered.

Thanks for your reply. From Google I see that high blood pressure is a symptom of high aldosterone. My blood pressure is not high so I am not sure if that is a conclusive indication that my aldosterone is ok. Did you have high blood pressure?

Yes I did have high BP. It is a problem I am still fighting as GP could not find a BP tablet without Acacia Powder in it. More than just being high, it is a bit erratic, but never gets lower than normal.

did u talk to your endo, to adjust the dose? Take the meds at a different time?

I have TMJ, dealing with that is hard!

Good luck!
