Could this be side effects of methylfolate ?

Hi everyone. Just a quick question. I recently had a lot of help from everyone here having been undermedicated for several years & also started on T3 last December. I have tried to increase my B Vitamins & Folate which was low. I have had 4 months of bowel issues & a positive FIT Test & weight loss. I have been referred as urgent 2 week referral & had a phone appointment with a Consultant at a colorectal clinic today. They are referring me for a colonoscopy & full body CT. The consultant asked if I was taking any supplements such as iron so I told him Vit D spray & Methylfolate. As I answered I suddenly had a thought & wondered if my symptoms could be down to Methylfolate side effects. I'm feeling rather stupid as I hadn't thought about this before. I'm taking Jarrow Methylfolate 400mcgs daily & Solgar B Complex100 which contains 400mcgs Folic Acid. I'm going to look a right numpty if this is the cause of my problem. Anyone have any experience of this please.

When you've had folate measured in blood testing since taking methylfolate, what have the reference ranges been, and what were your results?

I take high dose methylfolate from time to time but if my folate test results goes much above 20 micrograms/L I stop taking it for a while.

If my results are a just a little bit low I'll take the high dose methylfolate a couple of days a week.

If my results are very low in range I'll take the methylfolate more days a week.

Taking high dose folic acid (as opposed to methylfolate) could be dangerous, but I haven't heard that it could increase the risk of cancer.

I forgot these links, which mention cancer development in connection with folic acid, or other adverse effects :

Hi thanks for your reply. My folate was 11 in 2022 then 7.1 later that year. Last year it was 9.8 then 13.1 but back to 8.8 in November. Then at my last test in August this year it was 14. I will take a look at all the links you have kindly sent me. I’m just trying to establish if Ive caused these problems myself. I don’t take the Methyfolate every day as frequently forget. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Sorry you are going through this and hopefully you will be ok after your investigation, I don’t know re side effects of taking folate … my message isn’t to scare you at all.

Information I was given when I questioned when at 54 when I had been prescribed folic acid was as I had seen mentioned in a podcast about 5 yrs ago. My GP and dietitian and a nutritionist (medically trained also) had mentioned that over 50s taking folate supplements is a bit of a grey area re supplementation and it’s possibly been linked that folate can bringing up certain cancers not necessarily causing it, just highlighting what may already be dormant, but the grey area is, with this age group we are all more susceptible anyway to things happening, so causation isn’t really clear or wasn’t back then… not that this is helpful to you now.

GP prescribing or self treating without full information and follow up tests is something I question I hate taken medication and try where ever to do things as naturally as I can but with underlying issues that isn’t always an option … like another mentioned this information was folic acid and not Methylfolate but I actually don’t see why this couldn’t do same, as it’s easier to absorb if it’s actually a folate issue, and not synthetic problem and/or a conversion problem or just coincidence.

My folate is always low side I did have a FITT test done some months afterwards also I'm more prevalent to cancers with coeliac disease (another reason why diagnosis is better you get all your checks done- well hopefully you do) and I have the normal age related screening every so often on top, but my levels aren’t great still, I just try to eat rich folate rather than supplement.

Wish you well hope you get good news 😊

Hi thanks for your reply. It must have got lost somewhere in amongst all my e mails. Sorry. I'm having the colonoscopy on Saturday so im keeping my fingers crossed all will be ok. I don't think that its what is causing the problem but have stopped the Methylfolate for now at lease. my levels had increased to 14. I will also try to eat folate rich foods in the future.
