HiSo pleased to have an iron panel work after so many attempts last yr, worked 2nd attempt:)

Just to recap please, had another b12 loading dose end March. Ferritin 48, then dropped 37 mid June (nhs)

End July(pinprick thyroid test)=85

1wk ltr(iron panel)=110

1wk ltr(I.p.retest)=59.9

Crp consistently <0.15 throughout.

IRON-17.5 (10-30)

TIBC-51.7(45-81)

UIBC-34.2(13-56)

TRANS SAT-33.8(25-45)

FERRITIN 59.9

The high 110 ferritin was just before period lst wk, do you think there could be a link in anyway with inflammation etc?

Hsve Three Arrows at ready, but darent take with the sharp ferritin rise until I cld get an iron panel. Still have breathlessness, tiredness, other sympt, partic mornings, just trying to work out what's what at mo between iron. B12, potential thyroid issues( & taking vit d.

Thank you...

Serum iron : According to the rt3-adrenals link rt3-adrenals.org/Iron_test_...

• 55 to 70% of the range

• higher end for men

Given that your result is 37.5% through the range and you are female I would say your result is too low, suggesting that you should supplement iron.

TIBC (total iron binding capacity) or Transferrin

• Low in range indicates lack of capacity for additional iron

• High in range indicates body's need for supplemental iron

Your TIBC is 19% through the range and your transferrin is 49% through the range, both of which are in the lower half of the range. This suggests that you don't have the capacity for more iron.

Transferrin Saturation : Your result = approximately 44%

• optimal is 35 to 45%

• higher end for men

Your Saturation is optimal suggesting that your iron levels are about right.

So its a mixed picture with your serum iron slightly lower than optimal but the other results point towards not having capacity for an iron supplement.

Suggest increasing iron rich foods in diet and eating them often. Chicken livers, pate, red meat etc

Link with ideas for dietary iron:

dailyiron.net/

Which brings us to your thyroid results of 3 weeks ago which are too low. You need to push for a dose increase. Ask for it as a trial which often goes down better.

TSH 2.44 (0.27-4.2)

FREE T3 4 5 (3.1-6.8)

FREE T4 14.9 (12-22)

Hi Jaydee1507Thanks verymuch for such a detailed response. Yes,it's a bit odd as in the past once ferritin gets 50-60ish I've had other elements if the iron panel signalling I have a bug need for need. Guess it constantly changes.

A bit confused as to why iron isn't overtly high in range yet other parts are saying I don't have capacity for iron. Trouble is, unless I supplement, ferritin at that amount isn't going to last long before it lowers again,is it.

Is there are chance the transferrin saturation is slow to catch up seeing as ferritin has just zoomed up.to.high,then lowered?

Do you think it could he due to b12 issues or maybe thyroid? I'm not on thyroid medication, but kind folk on here have suggested I approach Dr, have an appt in couple wks.

I eat red meat/fish/oily fish/nuts daily/ and other foods high in iron. Must admit, used to eat ox/pigs liver twice weekly, when trying to improve iron/b12 but still struggled with iron stores. Then had a bad stomach upset after it, it was very well cooked, prob a coincidence, but swopped to chicken livers. Then got concerned abt them not being organic & what else I was ingesting! So gave up. Perhaps I need to retry!

Thank you for all of that much appreciated.

Have you had thyroid antibodies tested?

Always test thyroid at 9am or earlier for highest TSH result. Fast before test and no biotin supplement for 4-7 days max.

I'm not enough of an expert on iron to really know the nuances of it and there are a lot of them!

Looking at your previous post about B12 that looks to me like a huge issue for you and thats what I would be persuing in the first instance. If GP won't take the issue up and treat then many self inject with good success.

Thanks, yes I've tested antibodies many times with pinprick tests. Never more than 20,so presume its not a problem.Thank you, yes, I test early and fast. Tsh has been up & down for yrs, high as 6, low as under 1,but notbso much for long while, settles at somewhere between 2.5 and 3.5ish.

Yes you're bo doubt right, could all be due to having the loading doses and potentially not regular enough injections, but then ud expect ferritin to be lowering. Don't think Dr will give any further on that, but have been in touch with ab iron/b12 expert, so think I'll try that next.

Thank you again...

Ah so you've started loading doses. That may well affect iron levels for a while I would think.

Eat bananas regularly for the potassium.

Are you also taking a good methyl B complex? Contains folate which you will be needing also to use the B12.

B complex suggestions: Slightly cheaper options with inactive B6:

Contains B6 as P5P an active form:

Hi Jaydee1507Just checking back through my posts and realised when giving the Transferrin Saturation I failed to put the percentage sign on.

You kindly worked out the percentage through range which indicated 44% and I don't need iron. So ive been concerned at taking too much iron.Am thinking now though, if I take it as 33% marked on the results that would mean it's lower end of range and safe for me to take iron? And this was an error on my part?

Hoping that's the case, so I can up iron. As experiencingbsymptoms ironbrelated & ferritin not shifting from 30's...manybthanks

Thank you. Yes I had a loading dose end March, ferritin lowered at 8 wk bloodiest to 37. Having inj every 2 months. Actually had one July 31st, but did the ferritin 85 result a day before that. So a wk on wldve thought the b12 boost wldve lowered ferritin again, not raised it another 25 I was on monthly b12, for functional.defic. but changed to tablets during covid, but deteriorated and ground to halt early this yr

Wish I cld eat bananas, but have latex allergy! But eat lots of fresh veg & fruit daily as potassium always bottom range.

Yes think I'll heed to add folic acid in, used tontake it around injection time. I'd been advised ro take care due to history of colorectal polyps.

Thank you
