vitamin results

I’ve just received my vitamin results. My ferritin is 52, serum vitamin b12 level 462 ng/l, serum folate level 16.5 ng/l (range 3-20), vitamin D 90.

A year ago my ferritin was 48, vitamin b12 331 and folate 12.3.

I’m disappointed my ferritin has only gone up by 4. I tried cutting tea out near meal times and sometimes took vitamin C with meals.

What have you been supplementing with?

Vit D is good.

Ferritin should be around 90 - 100 for best use of thyroid hormone. Suggest increasing iron rich foods in diet and eating them often. Chicken livers, pate, red meat etc

Folate is good.

B12 should be above 500 for serum B12. What do you take for this?

I take vitamin D and B12 tablets I bought but not every day, maybe 3 times a week and sometimes less.

How much B12 and of what type is the B12?

Recommended to use methylcobalmin of 1,000iu every day. These are 2 examples: cytoplan.co.uk/vitamin-b12-...

Vitamin b12 is called zipvit and 1100 mcg. I thought my vitamin b12 was ok. It’s increased from 330 just over a year ago. I suppose I just need to get it up a bit more.

Try and take it more regularly, daily.

Either that or really your folate could be a little higher so a B complex is usually recommended.

B complex suggestions: Slightly cheaper options with inactive B6:

amazon.co.uk/Liposomal-Soft...

Contains B6 as P5P an active form:

I thought my diet was ok and I ate enough iron rich foods. On my nhs app it says 30-100 ferritin is indeterminate ferritin result and 100-310 is normal ferritin.

As hypo people we get low stomach acid which means we dont absorb vitamins well from our food.

Optimal ferritin is said to be 90-100 when we can use our thyroid hormone best. I wouldn't be looking at the NHS for information about vitamins.

Actually is my vitamin d of 90 a bit high? I’m thinking I should take the vitamin d less often now.

90 is about right, you wouldn't want it any less.

Vitamin D should be around 100 - 150

Oh I read it shouldn’t be higher than 125.

I googled “What level of ferritin should be treated?” and I got the following

medicalnewstoday.com/articl...

If symptoms are in accordance with iron deficiency, the patient should be considered iron deficient at least up to a serum ferritin concentration of 100 μg/L, or even much higher, if the patient has an inflammatory condition, kidney disease or fatty liver 2, 3.

I don’t think I have any symptoms. With hashimotos, should ferritin be higher as it’s inflammation if the thyroid?

Not what you're looking for?
