Hi, hope everyone is doing ok, would be grateful for advice please (and sorry if it’s been mentioned before) - what vitamins / supplements should I be taking with hashimotos? I’m a 44 year old woman. I’ve been taking a multivitamin and magnesium, sometimes extra iron (my ferritin is generally low at 30-40) but I think it’s been said here not to take multivitamins? Trying to reduce the amount of pills I have to pop! My diet is good - veg, fruit, nuts, seeds, some grains, meat and fish, red meat, dark choc. Gluten and mostly dairy free. Maybe I don’t need to supplement? Thank you for your help 😊

That's right, we don't recommend them. They usually contain not enough of the active ingredients to help low levels/deficiencies, often the wrong and least absorbable form of the active ingredient is used, they tend to contain some vitamins/minerals which shouldn't be taken unless first tested and known to be deficient -eg iodine, calcium, iron. Some of them shouldn't be taken together (eg B12 and Vit C is one example) and if it contains iron then that affects absorption of everything else as iron should be taken 2 hours away from any other supplements.

We should test key nutrients - Vit D, B12,Folate, Ferritin - and supplement what is necessary at the correct dose based on the results.
Hashimoto's itself doesn't necessarily require any special vitamins, it's a case of testing to see what your levels are and addressing any that are low.
We recommend testing ferritin, folate, B12 and vit D at least annually and sharing results with ranges in the forum for better advice. Multivitamins are not recommended as they often contain fillers. Supplementing magnesium daily is ok, or some members use magnesium salts in the bath. Do share all results with us so we can be more helpful.

Many supplements, individual or multi's, contain fillers
that’s very helpful and a good idea thank you Buddy195, I’m due a blood test so I’ll see what they’ll agree to test… it’s not always everything I’d like! 😆
