hi everyone , i had a partial thyroidectomy in december for a large goitre and whilst i feel good , I have really struggled with weight gain. Noticed it January and Endo was moving around my dosage from 100mcg of levo to 125mcg of Levo in March as my Tsh was jumping between 4 and 6. My calorie intake is1400 per day low carbs and i exercise every day with a good mix of running, swimming and cycling.

Ive went from 10 stone to 12 stone and im 5ft 4 its knocked my confidence and the weight wont shift and clothes are starting not to fit well. Im going to see a private endo next week and recent bloods show my TSH at 1.86 mu/L ( range 0.27-4.2mU/l) FT3 4.9pmol/L ( range 3.1-6.8pmoI/I) and FT4 21.2pmol/l ( range 12-22 pmol/l) my current endo said its menopause causing weight gain not thyroid as i’m 45 but , id like some steer from the community , as its odd the weight has suddenly came on after surgery. Is it worth me going to get a second opinion.

Thanks

TSH at 1.86 mu/L ( range 0.27-4.2mU/l)

FT3 4.9pmol/L ( range 3.1-6.8pmoI/I) and

FT4 21.2pmol/l ( range 12-22 pmol/l)

Was test done early morning and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Looking at previous posts you have Hashimoto’s

Are you gluten free and dairy free

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

No point being “almost “ gluten free, to be effective it needs to be absolutely strictly gluten free

SlowDragon, i strictly manage my diet , my only gluten is my one slice of toast in morning with banana. I dont like the gluten free bread ….

in reply to Void1234

Then consider giving up bread? If you're intolerant to gluten your body doesn't care that it's 'only one slice a day' that will still be too much.

So you are definitely not gluten free

it takes 3-4 months for gut to recover each time you eat tiny speck of gluten

There’s hundreds of different GF breads

Waitrose brown seeded pre sliced is my personal favourite. Keep in freezer. Toast in a separate dedicated gluten free toaster

watch out for cross contamination

Don’t share butter, spreads, jams, pickles etc

Separate cutting mat, serving spoons etc etc

Are you positive your in menopause? Your doctor isn’t lying about weight gain and menopause but what he isn’t taking into consideration is your partial thyroidectomy and together this is poison …. This happened to me had surgical menopause many years ago weight climbed but I was able to turn it around by exercising and dieting fast forward to thyroidectomy and the weight has just piled on doing the diet and exercising I had always done … and then everything unraveled even more when the arthritis attacked.

hi Batty, I have asked for hormone bloods to prove menopause as feel i’m being dismissed . I count on one hand what i eat each day and my exercise levels sky high, but honestly feel the weight just piles on still. People are mentioning to me have i slowed down exercising etc , its the opposite. I hope you get sorted Batty1 its so frustrating….

lots of people here also talk about doing too much exercise and dieting having a bad effect on overall thyroid health… like you I would exercise like a crazy lady and realized early on that my doctors were not going to help me understand what was going on with my body (they just don’t understand) and mentioning my weight issues constantly to them just brought more stress because they would say to me “it’s something your doing” to cause the weight gain …. I heard this so much that I died a little every time I heard it from my doctors…. Crazy thing is when I was thin and fit and had health issues pop up I heard often “ you workout too much or eat too little” As a women your always to blame for weighing too much or weighing too little especially when health issues come around…. Curious do men get the same doctor responses to their weight troubles?
