Hi all,

I'm based in Ireland, am post partial thyroidectomy and suffering. I don't tolerate binders and fillers in meds generally, as well as having food sensitivities etc. I'm looking to find an online source. My doctor isn't espeically understanding of my difficulties unfortunately.

Please PM if you can help.

Kind Regards...

welcome to the forum Pastorbarrett, so we can offer better advice, please can you share your thyroid blood test results:

TSH

FT4

FT3

Plus any antibody and key vitamin tests (ferritin, folate, B12 and Vitamin D)

Are you currently taking thyroid medication?

Yes, prescribed starting dose of levothyroxine 25mcg.

My thyroid numbers don't seem especially bad, but I feel typically symptomatic.

My history is that I had partial thyroid removal for benign goitre. My function was good and I was without thyroid related symptoms, was advised to remove due to large size of goitre.

My TSH pre op was consistently 0.5 or 0.6 over several tests. My T3 and T4 average around 6 and 18 respectively. My TSH now hovers around 2.

Now I have dry eyes, skin, mucous membranes. Fatigue and poor exercise tolerance. Low libido. Low mood and anxiety.

I have had a rake of tests for autoimmune etc and all are clear. My D3 was about 80 on last test and B12 around 400. Apologies I don't have ranges but I expect UK and Ireland use the same typical lab ranges.

I immediatley get strange joint and gastro discomfort on taking Levo and have tried a couple of times but stopped after a couple of weeks due to these side affects not abating. BUT, I typically feel normal in the couple of weeks after cessation, perhaps due to long half life of T4? And then back to symptoms a week or two later.

I appreciate any advice and input here. Many Thanks...

Ranges can vary greatly between laboratories, so please ask for a print out of all vitamin and thyroid tests and repost.

25mcg Levothyroxine is a low starter dose, so likely you will need more.

For dry eyes use preservative free drops like HycoSan or Hyloforte.

Tirosint is called various names across Europe. It is available in quite a number of EU/EEA countries.

Be aware that there are both the original Tirosint gel caps and the more recent Tirosint SOL individual doses of liquid.

I'm not aware of any non-prescription sources of either in Europe.

Are you able to get a prescription? That might help - but you would have to check which countries/individual pharmacies would accept such prescriptions. I have no idea if Irish prescriptions are valid in any EU/EEA countries.

My medicines document is definitely NOT complete for Tirosint/Tirosint SOL products. But it is a starter.

I seem to remember that Ireland is quite restrictive for personal importation of medicines?

(You could add your country to your profile. That would make sure people can always know where you are!)

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines

I have created, and try to maintain, a document containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world. It is sectioned by UK - rest of the world, and by T4, T3, desiccated thyroid, etc.

And do keep up to date. I edit it frequently - sometimes trivially, sometimes extensively. If your copy is more than a few weeks old, please download it again. (You must download - not just view in a browser - for the Table of Contents to work.)

Thanks folks. Here's my latest labs with ranges...

Really, the only difference with my labs pre-surgery are my TSH was 0.5 or 0.6 over several tests. I do know the increase is marginal and well within acceptable limits, though my query is if my body is happier at previous levels, or this simply academic. Again, thankful for insights.

TSH 1.81 0.27-4.2

Free T4 17.9. 12-22

Free T3 6.6 3.1-6.8

Ferritin 224 30-400

Serum Iron 19.7. 5.8-34.5

Vit D - 81. 30-125

Antibodies are all negative, ANA, Thyroid antibodies, Rheumatoid factor etc

B12 481 197-771

Actually, I should say my cholesterol has gone up significantly since surgery too.

Hello! Replying from the US. I too have issues with fillers, particularly corn- based ones which are rampant in meds and supplements. My symptoms usually manifest as severe eczema. I have been using Tirosint Sol for a couple years now because it only has three ingredients. However, I have only recently begun to suspect it may be the reason I’ve had a pervasive skin problem. One of Sol’s “inactive” ingredients is glycerol which I understand to be derived from corn. I have placed an inquiry with Sol’s maker to find out the source. Today, a service rep told me in that in April 2022 the glycerol was changed from a synthetic to a vegetable oil but it is not olive oil. I’m waiting to hear back from the company.

If the glycerol does turn out to be corn-derived, I am going to pursue natural desiccated thyroid, specifically WP Thyroid which does not have corn fillers. I’m also investigating the possibility that I may be allergic to Levothyroxine itself, thus the need to use NDT instead.

If you’re interested in pursuing Sol, try contacting the company directly. At least in the US, the customer service was excellent.

Blessings on your pursuit of wellness!
