Is the medichecks advanced thyroid a good test to do?
Yes, all the private testing companies are fine (and some use the same labs to process the tests) as long as the blood collection has been done correctly (thinking more of fingerprick test here). The advanced test will give a full thyroid picture plus vitamin profile.
Good to see you're home now, I hope things improve for you soon.
I've never had venous blood draw for private tests, always done fingerprick tests due to there being no blood draw facility within at least a couple of hours away. Mine have always been fine but there are certain precautions to take when doing fingerprick tests so that the blood doesn't get spoiled (eg not squeezing finger to get blood out).
If you have phlebotomy facilities close and are happy to spend whatever it costs then you might feel more reassured that all will be well.
can it be any time of day
That depends. If TSH is an important result, for example if it was a test your doctor is going to see and adjust your dose by, then you would need to do it no later than 9am when TSH is at it's highest point of the day, this is because if TSH is too low then doctors will probably lower dose of Levo based on that, many don't realise that it's the FT4 and, more importantly, the FT3 result that show our thyroid status.
Also, because certain food and drink might affect TSH then it's best to have water only before the test so the earlier the better, ie before breakfast and morning tea or coffee.
Any iron test should be done after a 12 hour fast so again an early appointment before breakfast is best.
I realise you're not on Levo and my comments are general ones.
Also, just to point out that the thyroid antibodies included in the advanced test are for Hashi's (underactive) and are not the TSI or TRAb antibody tests that are needed for Graves (overactive).
I would definitely recommend testing for Graves, as I was originally diagnosed with Graves (mainly because lots of hypothyroid symptoms) yet antibodies showed Hashimotos/ under active.
I use Medichecks for my yearly full thyroid function test to include the vitamins and minerals and arrange a nurse home visit through Medichecks and I then get a phone call from the nurse to arrange time and date for her to call at my house.
Best to have the blood draw early morning and fast overnight until after the nurse has gone and if I choose a day at the beginning of the week my results are back within a day or two.
Medichecks can run both blood tests, Graves Antibodies and full thyroid.
The nurse will probably just need to draw an extra phial as these are two separate tests.
thankyou everyone for your great advice i will now add the additional test with medicheck for Graves disease. I hope when i get the results you guys will beable to help me as this is so new to me. Thankyou
