Give up soya milk?

I have seen several posts here recently stating that Hashimoto's sufferers should avoid soya. Does this mean all soya products - soya beans, soy sauce, soya milk, and processed food with soya amongst the ingredients? I am lactose intolerant and although I now use nut milks etc. in most other things, I have never found anything that I like in tea except soya milk. Do I have to give up drinking tea now (as I can't take normal tea black)? Help!

I should add that I have nothing like some of the symptoms I have seen some other people reporting on - I take levothyroxin every day and my blood work results are pretty good, although I think my T3 levels could be better. I'm pretty much fine as I am, I'm just wondering whether there's a way to feel even better.

Difficult to answer that one, because opinions vary. Some say it's just unfermented soy you should avoid - which you definitely should! - and that fermented is ok. Others say that fermenting soy makes it even worse!

The thing with soy is that it impedes the uptake of thyroid hormone by the cells. So, you can have decent levels in the blood, but it isn't getting into the cells, thereby keeping you hypo.

My personel opinion is that soy isn't food and all of it should be avoided like the plague, but even small amounts make me ill, even soy sauce, so I could be prejudice. :)

Hi. I have found the lactose free milk (not Soya) sold in supermarkets absolutely fine in tea. I wouldn't know the difference between it and ordinary milk. I don't know what might be available to you in Belgium but the well-known discount supermarkets in UK sell a very reasonably priced version.

Thanks, but I've got so used to soya milk in tea that I actually don't like the taste of ordinary milk in it any more!

i found that it only takes a few cups to get used to a different milk.

Well that's not true for me.

I feel that if you are doing OK thyroid-wise at the moment, then go ahead with your soya milk. Just don't overdo it!
