Soya and its impact on T3 - what's the story?

I'm beginning to think that soya milk does not agree with me. I have had two occasions recently where I've had a coconut/soya milk hot drink and felt awful about 9-10 hours later for about 12 hours or so. Normally I avoid soya, but if it creeps into ingredients low down on the list I'm would probably eat whatever it was.

I am normally 100% gf and df and going strict df was a game changer for me, with lift in mood, engergy and reduction in headaches. Any thoughts? Do I need to go all out soya free too? It's on Dr Isabelle Went's top 10 culprits.

Soya

Soya interferes with thyroxine absorption, therefore if you are taking thyroxine you should try to avoid soya. If you wish to take soya, there should be as long a time interval as possible between eating the soya and taking the thyroxine.

There is evidence of certain brands of soya milk being withdrawn from sale by authorities in countries such as Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Japan because they contained excessive amounts of iodine or being highly enriched with seaweed products that naturally contain iodine.

Thanks Shaws. The drinks were about 6/7 hours after taking my thyroxine (I'm only just started on this), so I guess it's sensible to skip soya milk altogether. No big hardship really!

Soy doesn't affect thyroid hormone absorption in the gut, so it doesn't matter how long after taking levo you consume it. What it does is impede the uptake of thyroid hormone by the cells. So, you can have good levels in the blood but still be hypo. It makes sense that your felt ill some time after drinking the soya drink. It also makes sense to avoid it completely. :)

For people with thyroid problems, a high intake of goitrogens may worsen thyroid function by blocking iodine uptake, which is needed to produce thyroid hormones of course; interfering with TPO enzymes which normally attach iodine to the amino acid tyrosine which together form the basis of thyroid hormones; and by interfering with thyroid stimulating hormone. But really, the bottom line is if it causes a reaction whereby you feel awful, don't consume it - I do from time to time, and have no discernible symptoms but if it made me feel noticably unwell I'd definitely avoid it.

Read this description how soy milk is made. Also, the protein is a second grade protein and must be converted in thebody to a first grade. All proteins are not equal. It is incorrect to claim “protein” without explaining - it is totally different to animal protein.

I live in an area where soy beans are grow, i can tell you, soy is heavily laced with roundup. Even when they are in the field, they are made ready for market when mature, by spraying with a herbicide which kills the whole patch. You won’t find this info about Soya beans, anywhere.
