Blood test results, help please

Hi all, I've just had my blood results back from Medichecks. I'd appreciate some feedback please.

CRP HS 3.1 mg/L range 0 - 5

Iron 21.2 ug/L range 13 -150

Folate serum 11.84 ug/L range 3.89 -19.45

Vitamin B12 active 121 pmol/L range 37.5 - 188

Vitamin D 88.3 nmol/L range 50- 200

TSH 0.02 mu/L range 0.27 - 4.2

Free T3 4.25 pmol/L range 3.1 - 6.8

Free Thyroxine 16.2 pmol/L range 12 -22

Thyroglobulin antibodies 12.4 iu/mL

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies 17 iu/ml

I took the test at 8.50 am and had not taken my Thyroxine since the previous morning. I had stupidly stopped taking all my supplements/vitamins about 3 months ago. I just got out of the habit. Have now restarted. I went to give blood about 10 days ago but my haemoglobin levels were too low. Reading was 117gl. My diet has been awful lately, I know I've not done myself any favours there!

I'm trying to eat more healthily but am struggling with depression and weight gain. Perhaps I've been over medicating? I've been taking 150 mcg Thyroxine per day.

I've got some T3 tablets but haven't taken any yet. Do you think I should?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you

No, definitely not overmedicated. Look at your FT4 and FT3 levels - 42% and 31% through range respectively. To be overmedicated your FT3 would be over range. Don't make the mistake of thinking a low TSH means overmedication, it doesn't. TSH is a pituitary hormone, not a thyroid hormone. If anything, if you are symptomatic then an increase of Levo at this stage would probably help.

As an inflammation marker, the lower the level, the better ideally below 1.

Iron 21.2 ug/L range 13 -150

This is Ferritin (iron store) not serum iron. It is very low. According to NICE Clinical Knowledge Summary a level below 30ug/L confirms iron deficiency. You should ask your GP to do an iron panel which will show any deficiency and a full blood count which will show if you are anaemic. Your low haemoglobin level suggests anaemia. You can have iron deficiency with or without anaemia.

Some experts say that the optimal Ferritin level for thyroid function is 90-110ug. Your level is likely to be causing symptoms.

Folate and B12 are OK.

Vit D is recommended to be 100-150nmol.

I wouldn't start taking T3 at the moment, you need to sort out the iron deficiency and Ferritin level before doing anything else.
