Test results!

Here are my results from Medichecks taken on Wednesday 12th May.

A big improvement in T4 though TSH is lower. No T3 yet to report:

TSH 0.01 (was <0.05 on 9/4/21)

T4 21.8 pmol/l [12-22] (was 34.7 on 9/4/21)

T3 - I have to re-test, 'problem with sample'

It seems that I don't have any autoimmunity, though Medichecks don't test for Trab. Perhaps should have used Thriva:

Tg 26 IU/mL [0 - 115]

Tpo 10.6 " [0 - 34]

Am I right to feel relieved or can antibodies 'hide'?

Inflammation is brilliant:

CRP HS 0.3 mg/l [0 - 5]

Perhaps going gluten free helped plus large doses of fish oils.

And iron and vitamins are good to too good but I only stopped taking them for 2 days as I needed the thyroid results in time for my endo appointment next Wednesday (if she remembers to ring this time.):

Iron 96 ug/L [13 - 150] (I had been taking ferritin sulphate for 10 days)

D 84 nmol/L [50 - 200] (always take D except for 2 dys before test)

Folate >20 ug/L [>2.9] (Folate 400mg started 3 days before stopping for test)

B12 was off the scale:

B12 >256 pmol/L [25.1 - 165] Again, I stopped taking my B12 2 days before the test. But I take high strength sublingual B12. It helps considerably with neuropsychiatric symptoms (i.e not wanting to leave the house because everybody hates me). The scale seems odd to me, anyway.

I have the replacement test and will do it first thing and post it off. The infernal itching has gone, as have the gritty eyes, and I feel less achey. It would be great to have some input on my results.

though Medichecks don't test for Trab.

Yes they do but it's a separate test, not included in any test bundle like TPO and Tg antibodies:

Thank you, SeasideSusie. Do you think there is any point in having one as the other two are low?

They are looking for different things.

TPO and Tg are typically elevated in Hashimoto's (underactive).

TRAb and TSI antibodies are typically elevated in Graves Disease (overactive).

It's as if you are looking over my shoulder - I was just looking this up (again) :-)So do you think I can rule out Hashi's from my results?

That's a difficult one to answer.

Apparently you can have Hashi's even if you have negative antibodies.

I've had mine tested a few times over the years, not necessarily because I think I may have Hashi's but because they came as part of the test bundle.

The highest mine have ever been (same ranges as yours):

TPO: 11.2

Tg: 21.6

and the lowest they've ever been:

TPO: 6.6

Tg: 12

I don't believe I have Hashi's, I've never had the tell tale swings from hypo to false "hyper" that Hashi's brings.

And I'm definitely Hypothyroid, never was hypERthyroid originally for treatment to make me hypO.

Right, thank you. Does that mean that you are non-auto hypothyroid?

Yes, that's right, my hypothyroidism isn't autoimmune.

Hey there again ;

Well, you will not get a Graves antibody blood test back before your next appointment this coming week.

I would ask the endo if the antibody test has been received back from the laboratory and what does s/he now know you are dealing with ?

Also ask for a copy of the medical evidence for your own records :

Just as an aside for those dry gritty eyes whether prescription or OTC just please make sure all your lotions, potions, drops and gels are " preservative free " :

There are many choices with " gunky heavy duty " gels for overnight use - just as there are light sprays and water type droplets for everyday use but " preservative free " is essential even if prescribed, check the packaging to ensure you're not compounding the problem.

Antibodies can wax and wane but to have a diagnosis the blood test is analysed so you have the definitive proof and medical evidence of the diagnosis and what the medication is based on.

Hi Pennyannie, Do you mean ask the endo in the future if a future antibody test has been received back from the laboratory? The NHS haven't sent me for further tests yet - this appointment is my first with an endo (since one in 2006).

Thank you for the eye drops advice. When it was bad I tried a Murine eyelid spray (made it worse), then some Evolve drops from the chemist (I remembered reading on another post about preservative-free) but these didn't help either. What did help was washing my eyelids and then gently massaging coconut oil all the way around my eyes and over my lids.

Is it possible to have low Tg and Tpo but a high Trab?

Just seen this as I'm refreshing my memory - trying to at least!!!

Sorry, I thought the hospital would have initially run thyroid blood tests as a new patient to have some facts on which to help and advise you.

You can have both Graves and Hashimoto's running at the same time and the treatment for Graves will take precedence as Graves is considered life threatening if not treated.

Yes, you 're correct and cleaning the base around the eye lashes will help remove the build up of debris and ointments, and unblock the tear ducts.

Hi rowanbovis

If you've been supplementing with vitamin B12, results will be skewed unless you've stopped taking it for approx 4 months.

There are many research papers on the neurological and psychiatric symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency (40% also have thyroid disease) on Tracey Witty's excellent b12def. website plus other good advice - various links below :

BMJ research document summary (full document behind a paywall) also below:

Thanks very much. Polaris. I am fascinated by B12.

Oh yes, I have been poring over this website.

I know the feeling ! Thyroid Disease and PA/B12def. runs in our family. I'd also recommend Dr Kelly Brogan and researcher, Dr Carmen Wheatley, who calls vitamin B12 a pan vitamin.

I'm finding supplementing injections with liposomal B12 (available at Bodykind and Amazon) is helping with energy and stress.

Hope you find answers 🤞
