Hi,I hope you are all keeping safe. I'm in a very bad place and feeling very ill .. I have a DVT in my leg and having to inject daily into my stomach with blood thinners. My poor tum is black and blue and finding it a real struggle now to inject myself. Then 2 weeks ago was rushed into Hospital with suspected clot this time in my stomach. I have excruciating pains in my lower right stomach. They did scans/ ultrasound/ lotsa bloods, chest x ray. The scan revealed lots of compacted poo . I also had black poo.

I was sent home with a diagnosis of SEVERE CONSTIPATION, and to take LAXIDO and Morphine for the pain, which I refuse to take. They did do a rectum examination and said all was ok.

They told me to ring my GP if I'm still suffering and will need a colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy. Why the hell didnt they do these other tests, when I was an inpatient.

My GP is ringing me on Thursday.

I was wondering if any one has experienced the same.

Keep safe

Thank you

Bubba

They can’t do either procedures with a colon full of faeces. They should have referred you to endoscopy directly. I would ask gp to check that this has happened on the 2 week pathway. It is unlikely to be suspicious but you need to have that confirmed. Good luck.

You can buy Bio Kult advance multi strain formula from any chemist, it will resolve the constipation and it is safe. As for the black stools if your are taking iron tablets this is the reason, if not it could be internal bleeding, the doctors need to determine what is causing it. Endoscopy and colonoscopy is required.

Morphine has severe constipation as a side effect, so it is a bit weird to use that as a pain killer in your situation.

From wikipedia :

Constipation

Like loperamide and other opioids, morphine acts on the myenteric plexus in the intestinal tract, reducing gut motility, causing constipation. The gastrointestinal effects of morphine are mediated primarily by μ-opioid receptors in the bowel. By inhibiting gastric emptying and reducing propulsive peristalsis of the intestine, morphine decreases the rate of intestinal transit. Reduction in gut secretion and increased intestinal fluid absorption also contribute to the constipating effect. Opioids also may act on the gut indirectly through tonic gut spasms after inhibition of nitric oxide generation.[34] This effect was shown in animals when a nitric oxide precursor, L-arginine, reversed morphine-induced changes in gut motility.[35]

Glycerine suppositories are a last resort, but I’ve also found Dulcolax to work well. If you buy the capsules it’s easy to adjust your dosage. Hope you feel better soon? Chronic constipation is miserable, and people don’t always understand how awful it makes you feel.

Unfortunately the procedures you are being referred for need the areas to be investigated to be clear beforehand, which is why you were unable to have them done while in hospital. Yes, morphine can cause constipation, but as you are on blood thinners, the choice of painkiller can be limited. Because of your blood medication, be careful about taking any non-prescribed digestive aids, as they can alter its effects. I do hope things will get better for you soon.

Thank you, and yes I'm being very careful with pain relief meds, I'm only taking paracetamol. Keep safe🤙
