T3 and optimal vitamin plan

HollieBerry profile image
21 Replies

As per my previous post, I will soon be starting a T3 trial.

It was mentioned that my vitamins levels need to be optimal so I have invested in the following supplements (pic attached) I hope I have got the right combination!?

I will continue using the iron ferrous sulphate as prescribed by doc - along side the vit c ‘immunity boost’ supplement

Am I alright to use the D3/k2 spray with the magnesium at bedtime?

Thank in advance for any advice x

I’m no vitamin expert, but I believe vit d needs to be taken at least 4 hr way from thyroid meds and I include T3 in that, personally, so you might not want to take it at night if you are taking one of your T3 doses in the evening. I tend to take the vitamins at lunchtime to avoid this challenge!

My plan was to take my second dose of T3 at 4pm - I feel the effects of stimulatory things quite strongly so I’m expecting the T3 will have this effect.

I’m trying to have as few med times as possible, so I planned-

7am - T4 & T3

11am - iron and vit c

4pm - T3

9pm - magnesium and D3/K2

What do you think?

I think that looks good, but it would be great to see a few more responses just to make sure, as I’m not the best with vitamins... in fact, I am reminded to swallow mine quickly now having forgotten at lunchtime! Sunday brunch rather than lunch is too confusing for the brain-fogged!!

Ok thank you 😚

The brain fog is my biggest nemesis. It’s why I left my job. I just lost all confidence in myself. And then of course that’s a viscous cycle!

Oh, god, I can do relate :( I was struggling (still am) with the brain fog and then I got made redundant in a restructure, which of course, hasn’t done the confidence any good... Anyway, hopefully T3 will have us back to our old selves soon!

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but

1) There are 4 types of magnesium in that supplement. Oxide is not a good one, it is the least absorbable and used as a laxative. Did you check the types of magnesium in the link I gave and do you really need all 4 types? The usual dose of magnesium is around 350-450mg daily so that supplement has a very hefty dose.*

*EDITED to say that I have just looked that supplement up on Amazon and it has 400mg elemental magnesium so that amount is OK but over half of it is the laxative form - mag oxide.

2) The amount of K2-MK7 recommended is 90-100mcg for up to 10,000iu D3. That supplement only contains 25mcg.

3) The immunity boost supplement is a multi containing iron, the iron will prevent the absorption of the other vitamins and minerals. So if you bought it because of the extra ingredients you wont get much, if any, benefit. If you want it for the Vit C it would have been cheaper just to buy Vit C.

Agree that magnesium oxide is laxative, also it's very cheap for supplement manufacturers!

Just wondering Seaside Susie, do you have a link or reference about iron preventing absorption of other vitamins and minerals? I did not know that. I know there are certain foods that prevent absorption of vits/mins, and I know there are many thing that prevent absorption of iron (like calcium, phytates, tannins, eggs etc), but iron preventing absorption of other vitamins and minerals is a new one to me. Thanks! :)

Carrie234

No, I don't have a link. I may have had one on my old PC which I changed last year and lost a lot of my links.

There was a discussion recently on the forum about this and I don't think anyone else came up with a link, do a search and you might find that post.

All I have found is the following about iron affecting absorption other minerals:

webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-7860...

How the interaction occurs:

Iron may bind to other minerals in your GI tract, which may prevent them from being absorbed.

What you should do about this interaction:

..... Do not take your iron supplement within 1 hour before or 2 hours after products containing calcium, manganese, tin, or zinc..........

Also from:

verywellfit.com/when-is-the... :

Also, you shouldn't take calcium at the same time as an iron-containing multivitamin or magnesium, since your body might not absorb it as well.

So once might assume that if it affects absorption of minerals then it's possible it may affect absorption of vitamin supplements. Erring on the side of caution would seem to be good advice here.

Thanks I really appreciate it, I will have a look at those links

Darn it! I wish I’d checked before I ordered them.

I did check the magnesium link, I wanted the malate to combat fatigue mostly, but I also liked the sound of two others - one to aid digestion/constipation and the other for sleep... so I guessed that combo would help with a bit of everything.

With the multivitamin - I chose that because the extra ingredients sounded familiar to ones I’d read might benefit me.... I was trying to kill 8 birds with one stone! Lol

So are they really not good? Shall I see if I can cancel the orders?

You can cancel Amazon orders as long as they haven't been despatched. So if you haven't received the despatch email then you will be able to cancel. I don't know the procedure as I've never done it but I am sure it's quite straightforward.

HollieBerry profile image

I’ve requested to cancel. Should be fine they weren’t being processed yet.

I’ve just done some deeper research into the magnesium and I see that there are better forms of it. Thanks for pointing that out. Please don’t think I’m not listening to your advice. I think it’s an adhd thing... I don’t read things properly, and I rush 🤦🏼‍♀️

Ok, I’ve found a company called Your Supplements. Just before I proceed to payment can I just run by what I have in my basket please 🙏🏼....

Vitamin C - 1000mcg

Magnesium glycinate- 200mcg

D3 - 5000iu with K2 - 100mcg

Keeping it simple this time and it’s worked out cheaper too.

They seem like clean products, without fillers etc.

Does this look like a good combination?

Hello! That magnesium looks like it has 100mcg elemental magnesium in (which is pretty standard). You have to search a bit to find something with more and it will be a bit pricier - this one for example amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B08BNJ... you can take multiple of the 100 capsules to get the dose you want.

Also have you looked at b12 supplements? Most people with thyroid issues have low b12 and it can make a real difference to how you feel.

I think others have suggested this but I’d recommend getting your vitamin levels optimal before you start taking T3. I would basically exhaust all options before the T3 - e.g. make sure your levo dose is as best you can get it. I take T3 and aside from being a faff it wasn’t the cure all I was hoping - actually I more needed to increase t4! Good luck :)

Thanks Arlie, I’m collecting my T3 tomorrow so I doubt I’ll be able to hold out on taking it any longer 🙈 perhaps I have done things a bit backwards. Lol but I’ll work it it all out I’m sure.

I ended up ordering some B12 as well. I’m excited to get started with it all! but I’ll try to remain cautious and not to get my hopes up too much! x

Do you need any other vitamins like B12, folate and ferritin? Have you had those tested?

For magnesium I take

uk.iherb.com/pr/doctor-s-be...

And vitamin D I take

uk.iherb.com/pr/thorne-rese...

In case either of these are useful.

I’ve also ordered some B12 now. Mines always at the low end but just within the ‘normal’ range so they don’t mention it. I’ve ordered the supplements now, but I’ll defo take a look at your sources. Tried and tested is always best! Thank you x

Sorry for late reply but you replied to yourself and not to me so I didn't get any notification.

Magnesium glycinate- 200mcg - each capsule provides 100mg of elemental magnesium and as mentioned above the daily recommended amount is between 350-450mg so it's up to you whether you take enough to take that amount. If magnesium glycinate is the form best suited to your needs then it's fine.

D3 - 5000iu with K2 - 100mcg - the only thing I would say about this is that as it's a capsule then you need to take this with plenty of dietary fat, there is no oil in the capsule for absorption so both the D3 and the K2 are going to compete for any fat you take this supplement with.

I think the dose you need is 4,000iu daily which is 28,000iu per week. As this is a 5,000iu capsule I'd be inclined to take it 6 days a week which is 30,000iu.

Retest after 3 months to check your level. You are aiming for 100-150nmol/L (or 40-60ng/ml) so once you reach this level you'll need to find your maintenance dose.

Vitamin C - 1000mcg - this is OK. If you don't get on with the ascorbic acid version of Vit C then you can try the natural forms such as acerola cherry.

Hi, I've also just done a lot of research & asking questions. I joined a Vit D group too. The Vit D is apparently better taken in the morning as it can interfere with sleep if taken too close to bed. It also needs taking with breakfast as it is fat soluble, so have something with fat in e.g. full fat yoghurt or a handful of nuts. I struggled to fit all the vitamin's into my day without them being too close to my Levothyroxine, so I'm going to start taking my levo at night instead to make things a bit easier. Good luck with it all 😊.
