Vitamin D optimal, but borderline

Good evening,

I have received results of my vitamin D on 4000 units/day, got also plenty of sunshine this year.

My result was 30 (30-50 optimal, 50-80 high optimal, over 80 - toxicity).

Few months ago my results was high optimal.

Is there any reason why this would drop? Should I take 6000 or 8000 units now?

Thanks!

It could be a lab error sleepymouse. What was the time period between your last 2 tests & your vit D results on the previous test?

in reply toBuddy195

Thanks Buddy195, it was 6 months apart

Is the measurement ng/L or pmol/L ? If the former then reaching 60++ would be good and3/4000 iu's daily will hopefully get you there.

grassrootshealth.net

Are you also taking the co-factors - magnesium and K2-MK7 ?

in reply toMarz

Thank you Marz, it's the former ng/L, I have been taking 4000 units daily with K2, and yes I do take magnesium. Do they help with absorption? Should I increase my dose to 6000 units?

Magnesium works with the D to aid absorption. K2-MK7 directs improved calcium uptake from foods into bones and teeth - rather than hanging around the arteries and soft tissues.

According to Grassroots Health - link in my last Reply - suggests 1000 iu's for every 10 points below 60. So your current dose should be adequate. If you can tolerate more then you could boost your dose during the winter months.

Thank you, this is really helpful. I have been taking 4000 units for the past year, so with results of 30 it would make sense to raise by 3000 units to go up to 60?

Your result of 30 requires at least 3000 to bring you up to 60 - so your current dose of 4000 should be fine. I suggested you could increase for winter if you tolerate D well - some don't ....

Ah I see, thanks for claryfing. I have Hashimotos, maybe I don't absorb it well, not sure. I tolerate it very well and will increase it a bit. Just something came to my mind...I have been taking Solgar vit D in tablets, instead of my usual brand in oil. I wonder if this could have skewed my results?

VitD is fat soluble so many of us find the gel capsules containing D3 and olive oil are very good. Check out Amazon - I think the brand is Dr's Best.

in reply toMarz

Yeah I have ditched solgar a few days ago, and now taking my old reliable brand, hopefully this will sort it out! Thank you Marz!

You can calculate how much you need to increase on the vitamin D calculator here grassrootshealth.net/projec...

in reply toCarys21

Thank you Carys21, just calculated it and it seems I need 10,000 units a day based on my weight and current dose to achieve 60. I will double my dose for now to 8,000 and see how I get on :)
