Optimal Vitamin C For Teens

Good Evening Dear Members,

Some of you already know me. I have posted a couple of days ago regarding my daughter who has a nodule on her thyroid and our options to treat it.

I have another question. If she has problems with absorption and if I wanted to give her some vitamin C, what is an optimal dose for a 16 year old and would you kind people recommend any particular brands.

She has her thyroxine in the morning and ferrous fumerate twice before lunch and dinner. So looking at giving her vitamin c three times a day with these meds.

Thank you in advance. Have a wonderful evening.

Love and regards

You can basically take as much Vit C as you want to, it will be obvious when you're taking too much as it will cause diarrhoea so you'd cut back a bit if that happened.

Vit C leaves our body quickly so it should be taken in divided dose. Some people take 2000mg a day, personally I take somewhere between 4000-5000mg - this is approximate because I take it in powder form and just spoon some out.

Personally I prefer to take as few "extra added ingredients" as possible so I use an acerola cherry powder with no added ingredients and make a small drink with it. There is also ascorbic acid powder, you would need to drink through a straw when that's made up into a drink to protect tooth enamel . And of course a variety of tablets. It's personal choice.

Keenbean,

Good timing for Vit C as it will aid with absorption.

However, I supplement 3g of Vit C daily so take it in a buffered form but this can not be taken with thyroid meds.

Buffered vitamin C is a form that is combined with calcium and/or magnesium, claimed to be gentler on the stomach when mega dosing, as the minerals neutralise the acid and cause the supplement to break down more slowly.

Your daughter may be fine but many people get digestive troubles when supplementing large doses of Vit C due to the acid effect.

Yes that was the concern I had too. Thanks for your reply Rads. Let's see if I get any more replies. Which brand do you use? Pls PM me if it's okay.

Keenbean,

No need to pm brand names. Only thyroid med "supplier names" are required to be pm'd.

I use Biotics Research Corp or BioCare. Originally over several months for heavy metal detox but liked the results so much I just kept it up.
