HRT & Supplements

Hi

I’ve been on HRT for a month now (oestrogen gel and progesterone tablets). I’m also taking Levo and T3. I’m slowly easing back in my supplements as I wanted to start the HRT on its own. I’m now back on vitamin B complex and vitamin D but I want to add in magnesium. However I’m not sure if it’s ok to take the magnesium close to the oestrogen gel. I want the magnesium for sleep and so ideally take about an hour and a half or so before bed but I put on the gel about 20 minutes before bed. Which means I’d be taking them in about an hour of each other.

Does anyone know if that’s ok? I can’t find anything online.

Thank you.

How do you take the magnesium? Is it a pill? And, you put the gel on your skin? So, if you're swallowing a pill and putting the gel on your skin, the two won't come into contact with each other. It's when they meet up in the gut that things tend to interact with each other. :)

Hi Greygoose

Yes the gel goes on my skin and the magnesium is a tablet. That’s great, thank you.

Would transdermal HRT still effect the TBG.

Take your progesterone at night with magnesium. Both help sleep. Take oestrogen at least three hours apart from your Levo as they interact. Levo absorption can be affected by oestrogen. Take vitamin D during the day preferably maybe at same time as your oestrogen. Good luck 😊

Ps important not to take oestrogen and progesterone together as oestrogen reduces absorption of progesterone

Thank you Janeroar. I thought you were ideally supposed to take oestrogen and progesterone together (according to progesterone leaflet). I was in fact originally using the gel in the morning but because I was also taking thyroxine then, I found it a pain having to strip off late morning so I could put it on. Hence I swapped to using gel at night.

I missed the fact you’re using oestrogen gel not tablets. I’m not sure it makes much of a difference putting on gel and taking progesterone tablets at same time as gel as being absorbed by your skin rather than in your gut. However I would still say use oestrogen separately though as it is more enervating than progesterone so use in morning or afternoon and progesterone before you go to bed. I’ve found it has helped me sleep beyond 4am which is a typical waking up time for many menopausal women I know

Thank you. Sleeping until 4 am would be a dream, at the moment I wake every hour and a half ish.

How much progestrone do you take? My female hormone specialist has put me up to 3X100 mg of Ustrogen eventually and I feel much better. It might be that your patches aren’t delivering enough oestrogen. I take Zumenon tablets which contain the active ingredient estradiol hemihydrate which is a naturally occuring form of the main female sex hormone, oestrogen.

I’m on 200mg progesterone I think, the standard dose and two pumps of oestrogen gel. I know it can take a bit of adjusting. Would you recommend your specialist? If so, would you mind DMing her details? Thank you

How does that work with the combined oral form of HRT.

Yes good question. I did do some research about it after my hormone specialist at London Hormone Clinic recommended having it separately. There’s q a lot on internet about taking it separately. thesleepdoctor.com/2018/01/...
