I have my blood tests done annually & up till now my GP has approved all the tests I've seen recommended here (TSH, FT4, FT3, ferritin, folate, B12, vit D, TPO). I've been on 100mcg levothyroxine for a few years now. At this level combined with a gluten free diet due to Hashimotos I feel fine. Because of this my GP has just approved all the above tests except not FT3 or FT4. Is what my GP said correct, that it's not approved by the NHS to test these if a patient is feeling fine?

GP won't test T3 or T4
Not sure if it is an NHS instruction but it is the case that GPs rarely test FT4 and FT3 , and if they ask the lab to test they often do not when TSH is in range. There is a very minor cost saving ,maybe £2 but £2 pounds add up.
This is why many on this site use private testing. Medichecks usually have deals on Thursdays.
Yes, basically TSH only is tested but this can depend on the area where you live. If it's out of range I think the lab will then test FT4. I am in Wales and my TSH is always suppressed so I get TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested every time.
The new NICE guidelines state:
Adults
1.4.3 For adults who are taking levothyroxine for primary hypothyroidism, consider measuring TSH every 3 months until the level has stabilised (2 similar measurements within the reference range 3 months apart), and then once a year.
1.4.4 Consider measuring FT4 as well as TSH for adults who continue to have symptoms of hypothyroidism after starting levothyroxine.
If you really want FT4 and FT3 done and your GP can't get them done then you can always do them privately with Medichecks or Blue Horizon. Also the NHS has introduced "Monitormyhealth" and for £29 they test TSH, FT4 and FT3. As this is done by an NHS lab then the results would be acceptable to your GP. This is a way of saving the NHS money, not saying it's right but it is what it is now.
