Help interpreting results

Just had a recent blood test done about my thyroid with thriva, was hoping someone could help me interpret the results or give me some advice?

TSH 5.29 (0.27-4.3)

FT4 16.1 (12-22)

FT3 6.06 (3.1-6.8)

Thyroxine (T4) 88.7 (66-181)

TPOAb 9 (0-34)

TGAb 11.5 (0-115)

I went to the doctor before around 6 months ago complaining of tiredness, aswell as muscles and joint pains and she did some blood tests which only showed the basic tsh and free t4 which were

TSH 2.45 (0.3-4.29)

Free T4 11.4 (9-19)

aswell as showing vitamin D a little low when I went for the review she said everything was normal so I assumed it was all in my head or maybe from stress, obviously i still feel the same which is why on advice from a friend I did a private blood test and it was telling me my tsh is abnormal, but even tho I've looked around on this forum I dont really know what to make of it.

If anybody could point me in the right direction whether to pursue this or try looking at something else which could be causing me to feel crap it would be much appreciated!!!!

I would have B12 - Folate - Ferritin - VitD tested. If low in range they will make you feel poorly. Do you supplement ?

I would say your thyroid is struggling as the TSH in a healthy person is usually around 2 - also indicated by a raised FT3 ...

Always obtain copies of test results from your GP to monitor your progress and check what has been missed !

Thanks for replying!

you've actually just reminded me that my partner told me to get the online record from the doctors when I last went, and I've actually got the results after having a look.

B12 266 (187-883)

Folate 3.2 (3.1-20.5)

Ferritin 133 (22-275)

Vit D 47.9 (>50)

bare in mind this was from around 6 months ago tho. To the supplement question yes I do when I remember to, it's usually just a cheap multi vit every now and again with some d3 thrown in and berroca on occasion.

Maybe time to take supplementing more seriously ! A GOOD B12 supplement - Jarrow Methylcobalamin from Amazon. A GOOD B Complex to keep all the B's in balance and boost your Folate. I use Thorne Research - again Amazon. VitD - take 5000 iu's daily along with Magnesium and VitK2 MK7.

Please read the excellent Replies posted by SeasideSusie where she shares so much knowledge. Do you know how to find her ?

So your B12 and folate are both very low

Are you vegetarian?

BEFORE starting any B vitamins you need FULL testing by GP for Pernicious Anaemia

It's likely that B12 and folate are low because you thyroid is struggling....but it can be the other way around....that Pernicious Anaemia is upsetting thyroid

Do you have any Low B12 symptoms ?

Once you have had testing ....Supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in not folic acid may be beneficial.

B vitamins best taken in the morning after breakfast

Igennus Super B complex are nice small tablets. Often only need one tablet per day, not two. Certainly only start with one tablet per day after breakfast. Retesting levels in 6-8 weeks

Or Thorne Basic B or jarrow B-right are other options that contain folate, but both are large capsules

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

GP will only prescribe to bring vitamin D up to 50nmol. Aiming to improve by self supplementing to at least 80nmol and around 100nmol may be better .

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Thanks for the great reply

I'm going to be booking an appointment to see a doctor soon after having this blood test back and about my previous blood test showing I'm low in certain things, I'll remember to mention the anemia if I remember but I have been on a ppi called lansoprazole 30mg dose for a while now, i was only supposed to be on it short term until they found I had barrets oesophagus to which it seems they've just forgotten about me.

to answer the vegetarian question, no I'm not I'm probably on the other end of the spectrum, a meal isn't a meal to me unless I've got some kind of meat on my plate.

I just wish the doctors would actually take your word for how you feel into consideration instead of looking at a blood test and just saying everything's fine, I've learnt more in less than 24 hours on a forum than seeing doctors in person.

Well long term ppi will deplete vitamin levels significantly

gov.uk/drug-safety-update/p...

So you may need to supplement continuously to maintain optimal vitamin levels ....using mouth sprays to avoid poor gut function

I've had problems with acid for as long as I can remember, still catches me out every now and again if I forget to take gaviscon before bed

I'll book an appointment with the doctor and show my results aswell as tell them what I've learned from the replies. hopefully I get this sorted asap, it makes me really feel for the people who have it bad if mine is only struggling

Most GP's assume acid reflux is due to too much acid

Low stomach acid and high stomach acid have almost identical symptoms...but very different treatment

most hypothyroid patients have low stomach acid

You must not simply stop any PPI. Have to put improvements in place first

Essential to get vitamin levels optimal by supplementing

Many, many people find strictly gluten free diet helps too

I'll have to speak to a doctor about coming off them because I also have a hiatal hernia which actually lets the acid come up which probably caused my barrets.

I just wanna say a big thanks for all this info, this forum is brilliant and reassuring
