Well, after a sleep study & associated labs, I'm told my ferritin is 55 (range 20-228) and the doctor wants it to be at least 70. (Thyroid & all other numbers look good, however.) The nurse in the office called and recommended ferrous sulfate 325 MG, 2x day, and warned me that it causes constipation (oh, great) but gave no alternative other than dulcolax (softener, no thank you). Also said;
--to take 1000mg Vitamin C with it,
--to keep up with zinc (it's in the multivit, which has no iron),
--to take the ferrous sulfate apart from the T3 by at least 4 hours, and
--to avoid taking calcium or magnesium at the same time (I am dairy free) as they interfere with each other.
--they will test again in 3 months.
I have searched this site for "ferritin" and have seen many different answers about the best ways to raise it, but most are years old. The NIH site says to try for a core daily iron of 18 Mg from any source, heme or non-heme. (I'd like to try from food, and I do eat meat but cannot tolerate liver.) On the amazon site and in pharmacies (I am in USA now) there are so many options, literally hundreds, I have no idea what to choose.
Liquid? Carbonyl iron? Ferrous glycinate or citrate? Something else? This is new territory! I appreciate all the wisdom here and thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts.
