Thai seller of NDT gone out of business unexpectedly...!

I was shocked to find out that my supplier of Thai NDT (which I have recommended to many here) has gone out of business all of a sudden and the domain name is now for sale. Yesterday, the shop was still there and it was possible to place orders...now, it just says that it has closed and apologizes for the inconvenience.

This is really worrying as this shop was touted as "Thailand's best site for ordering Thai NDT" and the seller has been 100% reliable. Although there are many other sites selling Thai NDT, I cannot help but wonder if this is a worrying new trend where sellers of Thai NDT are forced out of business?

Has anyone else noticed any problems?

Really hope not!! 😯 It's difficult enough to get hold of as it is.

in reply toNatChap

Yes, but it's worrying that a seller who has been 100% reliable for years all of a sudden goes out of business without so much as a message to customers first...not a good sign at all, IMHO, even though I may be reading too much into this...but let's just say I never expected this to happen given how professionally this particular seller has always behaved in the past:-(

NatChap in reply to

It is a worry definitely. I use a different supplier and have recently stocked up on thiroyd so have about a years worth but it's something I'll be keeping a eye on. This is my biggest fear, that I won't be able to get hold of ndt anymore 😔

in reply to

OK, so this is getting weirder and weirder. I emailed seller and got this reply:

" I had to shut it down due to the US FDA."

But this is what worries me more than anything: this was a Thai business operating in and shipping from Thailand. How the h--- can the US FDA interfere and force it out of business? That should mean they can close all shops selling Thai NDT down?!?!

NatChap profile image
NatChap in reply to

Very strange. Maybe they'll find a way of reopening under a different name?

in reply toNatChap

Yes, and extremely worrying. I have contacted the two European suppliers of NDT I know of to ask them if they have had or expect any problems.

in reply to

I know we have some members in the US. Maybe one of them knows if the FDA really has this kind of power...? Even if the selling of NDT without a prescription is illegal according to US legislation, I doubt the FDA has worldwide jurisdiction...?! And this is not about the FDA blocking Thai NDT from entering the country, this is about the FDA actually forcing a foreign company out of business (according to seller's own statement)...!

MaisieGray profile image
MaisieGray in reply to

"I had to shut it down due to the US FDA" can be interpreted to mean all manner of things, but to me, that doesn't read as if the FDA actually shut it down. As a US Federal agency there's no reason to believe it has the powers to do so. For instance if my local authority highways department rerouted traffic due to pending road works which were then halted due to a planning appeal; and my shop lost so much passing trade that the business was no longer viable, I might say that "I had to shut it down due to the Highways Department" but that wouldn't mean that the Highways Dept had actually shut me down, just that indirectly its actions had caused my business to fail.

in reply toMaisieGray

No, that's what I thought...it just sounded incredible that a US agency would have that kind of power.

I have received a reply from one of the European suppliers of NDT who has not experienced any problems getting supplies from Thailand.

There have been (unsubstantiated) rumours in the past about the FDA trying to have Thai NDT banned, but I assume it would only be able to ban it in the US (prevent it from being sold there), not actually ban its production in Thailand...?

Quote "This unit works with other domestic and international agencies to track down the operators and suppliers of web sites that illegally sell prescription medicines" but if a drug is lawfully allowable to be freely sold OTC in its own country and a customer buys it under those rules then how can it be illegal. Surely the issue then becomes one of the customer importing the drug against their country's own import regulations and the "blame" is theirs, not the seller?

in reply toMaisieGray

Sounds reasonable to me. I know of people who buy thyroid hormones (both T3 and T4) OTC while on holiday in Greece. If bringing those drugs with them back breaks the import laws in their country of origin, surely the Greek pharmacy cannot be held liable for selling the drugs to them in the first place...?

helvella profile image

From what I have read in the past, desiccated thyroid products are not sold over-the-counter in Thailand.

People have said that they can get it delivered, e.g. to a hotel, but I suspect that might be a supplier bending the rules. I do not think you can go to a pharmacy and buy it without a prescription.

The same goes for this link - they aren't rogue sellers shipping to the US as you might imagine makers of fake Rolex or whatever, shipping thousands into the States for the purpose of retailing on; but a seller legally selling a legal 'real' product in/from his own country, and it being bought from that country. In effect no differently from a tourist buying it in Thailand whilst on holiday and bringing it home with them. Is the US wanting to make going into a shop abroad whilst on holiday, illegal, and the bringing home of one's purchase punishable by life imprisonment, I wonder. There has to be a differentiation between what is termed rogue sellers, and sellers behaving lawfully in their own country. Imagine if the United Arab Emirates wanted to have all Boots and Lloyds branches closed down for providing co-codamol or whatever in a manner that is legal in the UK, simply because the drug contravenes UAE laws.

Well said!

Great answer MG, but life imprisonment? Naaah! You get less than four years for treason these days, it used to be the death penalty.

I am in the US and am VERY worried if this is true....I'm actually shaking! The Big Pharmas in the US have a strangle hold on the FDA. It's getting harder and harder to get NDT here, even with a script, because of lack of supply. I have been ordering Thyroid S for myself for quite a few years. My Dr. will only prescribe levo. My husband's Dr will write a script for NDT for him, but they have all been unavailable so often, so I ordered Thyroid S for him back in December. He has been doing quite well on it.

Sorry I can't give any info from here. I hope all the members who order from these sites keep us informed.

in reply tojjf255

I contacted one of the most well-known suppliers of Thai NDT and was told they have no intention of going out of business. I'd be happy to PM the name to members.

If you are in the US and your husband's Doc will prescribe NDT why not get him to prescribe for you too? You can then purchase Armour NDT which is made and sold in the US. I realize it is expensive but I gave up two bottles of wine a month so that I can afford it, for me that's a win win.

jjf255 profile image
jjf255 in reply toLAHs

There is a reason I must stay with the Dr. I'm with. I can't switch at this time. All pharmacies in our area have trouble getting one NDT after another. Until my husband calls in his refill every month, he doesn't know if they will be able to fill it. If they can't get a particular one...he has to call his Dr's office to have them call in a different one. The hassle is getting crazy. That is why he is also switching ti Thai NDT. Also...I suspect the FDA along with U S drug companies are trying to eliminate NDT all together. The drug companies cannot patent NDT. I am also on a U S thyroid site and everyone on there is getting very concerned about what is happening behind the scene with the FDA and Big Pharma!

LAHs profile image
LAHs in reply tojjf255

Yes, I hear you. The only reason I'm OK for the time being is that I travel 400 miles round trip to get my Armour NDT. I have a trip coming up this week (oh joy). Fortunately I have friends at the far end with whom I can sleep over if I don't feel fit enough to do it all in one day (~7 hours). I get a book on CD in order to make it enjoyable. Fortunately I only have to do it 4 times a year which would be 3 times if I took the dose the doc says, but that is insufficient.

jjf255 profile image
jjf255 in reply toLAHs

Good that you have the ability to drive to get it. Yes...7 hours is a long drive. I have lowered the dose I take to extend my stock pile if things get tight.

I'm sure you are right- Big Pharma controlling everything behind the scenes. I know of a firm in Australia who have had some challenges to overcome but are still managing to supply.

I know some people may believe that this is perhaps not the place for the following information but:

Did you know that Google. most peoples's favourite search engine, own a lot of shares in 'Big Pharma'? Google, who in my view will become known as BIG BROTHER in the not too distant future, are as good as a Monopoly and know everything there is to know about us and our lives. They have a separate operation with 700 data analysts called Deep Mind. Guess what they are doing? The Guardian article below makes interesting reading. It makes huge sense to me that they are in the Pharmaceuticals business too ;-(

"Google’s partners, for example, include GlaxoSmithKline and Google's parent company Alphabet has invested in Vaccitech, a vaccine company with ambitious plans to create a “super-vaccine”. Further, Alphabet also has its own Big Pharma ventures."

There are alternative browsers that can be used including Ecosia, who plant trees with their profits and never sell on our data ( although they route through Yahoo, so the browsing info is kept for 4 days before deletion). Also, Safari for Apple users, Yahoo and Bing (only 2% of the browser market as at 2018).

The easiest way to shut down something that is "Not in the U.S. interests" -- i.e. reducing the revenue stream of the medical-pharmaceutical complex -- is through the banking system. Medical cannabis has been legal in California since 1994 but none of the vendors can use the everyday banking system, because the federal law still criminalizes cannabis, and banks are governed by federal law, as would be PayPay.

In California, for example, everyone has to pay cash for their legal medical cannabis, and the dispensaries handle vast mountains of it every day. When they convey to the tax collection authority the significant added percentage they have collected on their transactions, it is in great stacks of currency that reeks of cannabis. This is the only way for something sanctioned in the state to function against the resistance and objections of the pharmaceutical industry.

I contacted both of the two suppliers of Thai NDT in Europe I know of and have ordered from in the past, and they both told me the same thing:

It's been getting increasingly difficult to sell NDT. So far, they've been able to get supplies from Thailand without problems, but PayPal and credit card companies have been making it more and more difficult for them to process payments. However, they have found a way around this; customers transfer the money to their bank accounts (in EU countries) using a reference code rather than the product name, and the drugs are then shipped in a discreet package. Of course, intra-community shipments don't go through customs which makes it less risky than ordering from Thailand (depending on your country's import laws).

I was told that offline sales to previously established customers would be possible. If you successfully placed orders with the store before (assuming we’re talking about the same store) the seller said he would continue to supply you with NDT.

in reply toQuilliam

Yes, as long as the current stock (+100 bottles) lasts so I placed an order and paid through PP.

Yes, that makes sense...a friend of mine orders Greek T3 from a seller shipping from another EU country. They accept PP but the customer is told NOT to mention the name of the drug on the payment order, but only to use the order number provided in an email from seller.

There are actually a couple suppliers of Thai NDT in the EU who only accept bank transfers. At first, I found that a bit impractical but maybe it's the best way to avoid problems with PP...?

Interesting!

I recently received their email about this. I'm fuming. Who does the FDA think they are? They're like the bloody Empire.

Limbolass profile image
Limbolass

This is the email I received. It says the FDA is in contact with agencies from other countries, cos you know, USA rules the world & all.

My dear friends,

I'm writing to you today to quickly explain why the decision to take ******************************** down has been made.

1. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is actively investigating sales that are in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). Introduction of such products as desiccated thyroid into interstate commerce, including importation into the United States, is prohibited under sections 301(a) and 301(d) of the Act.

2. The above violation only applies to marketing the product to the US customers at the moment. However, FDA's OCI maintains an ongoing liaison with numerous government agencies in other countries.

3. Without going into details, I have reasons to believe that active investigations are being made specifically on desiccated thyroid and T3 from overseas.

As many of you may already know, I had a total thyroidectomy at a young age due to papillary cancer. I actively was seeking treatment that would give me my life back, and when I finally did I wanted to provide that opportunity to everyone in need along with information I possibly could supply on the topic. It saddens me that I had to shut it down, but to protect your information as well as mine I had to make this hard decision.

Although the website is offline, I want to ensure that:

1. All orders made were shipped out and tracking numbers were provided. If you made a payment, the item(s) is on its way to you.

2. All supplies are still available to previously established clients like you. Please email me if you would like to place an order. We will need to keep this strictly offline.

3. I will still be available to answer any questions you may have.

Lastly, I want to thank you for your ongoing support to keep this site going. It has been a pleasure serving and assisting you.

With appreciation,

***

Thank you so much.

It is good to get confirmation.

Please feel free to ignore this, but...

I don't suppose that your daughter in law would be able to access proper documentation as to ingredients of Thai desiccated thyroid products? What we have at present is a very unsatisfactory collection of information. Stop The Thyroid Madness even list two different sets of ingredients for one product!

We have a ndt seller on our fb group and I've used her and two other sources for a, long time. Hers is a, well known one. She can still send us ndt.but won't be able to once current lots have gone. But the website business is now shutdown. .

A message was sent to all of this seller's customers this morning, informing us that the web shop is now back in business. US customers will have to contact seller directly to place orders, whereas others can do it online just like before.

Yes, it's easier to go after a few thousand dollars worth of T3 than a billion dollar cocaine intrusion into the US. Honestly, how can they call these illegal, counterfeit drugs when they are sold to people IN Thailand? Do you know how many U.S. drugs KILL Americans that are legitimately on the market?

In the links mentioned regarding U.S. confiscation, they are called "rogue" pharmacies. Really, what pharmacy would set up to sell thyroid products on the sly? I think there must be bigger money elsewhere......like the aforementioned.
