Got a BFP on Saturday 1st December. Hashi with Hypothyroidsm, Restless Leg syndrome help anyone please?

Got a BFP on Saturday 1st December. Can't quite believe it, and am super cautious as I've been here before and it ended in tears. My clinic and GP won't do HCG bloods to confirm. so I have a scan booked at clinic in just over a weeks time.

My question... I have been getting really bad 'restless leg syndrome' again. I've had it on and off for maybe 2 years. Just when I think it's gone, it has come back with vengeance. I used to take 1 tramadol 50mg, knock the pain on the head and then be able to get back to sleep. However, I am more worried about taking them this time. I've tried 'Quinine' in Tonic water, extra vit B tablet on top of standard pregnacare, heat pads, hot water bottle, 10mins stretching before bed, a walk before bed and nothing.

It's really quite bad. Last 5 nights kept me awake from 1:00 - 1:30 (woke me up) and kept me awake till 5:30ish when I must have been so exhausted I crashed out on the sofa in the living room. I had a 50mg Tramadol tablet yesterday and got such relief and finally slept, but feel really guilty and don't know if it's doing any damage etc. I can't stay awake all night pacing the living room however, (so not to wake my other half) and then sleep during the day when he goes to work.

I'm Hypothyroid with Hashi. Currently on 150mg Levo, Clexane blood thinner injection, 20mg of Predinisolone (steroid), Lubion progesterone injections, 2 x 400mg of cyclogest, vit D, pregncare vit tablet and folic acid.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Can't quite believe things at the moment until the scan and I'll prob still be cautious. Taking things day by day x

Low levels of one or more of the following can lead to restless legs, spasm, cramp and benign fasciculations - iron, ferritin, magnesium, vitamin D, potassium. Apart from magnesium it is essential to test any that you might want to supplement.

There aren't any good ways of testing magnesium because of the way that the body controls it. Healthy kidneys should get rid of excess magnesium in urine. There are several ways of supplementing magnesium - you should choose the one that appeals to you most.

Personally I take magnesium citrate in powder form which I put in water and drink - I use a product called Natural Calm (unflavoured). Magnesium should be taken at night because it makes people relax and feel a little bit sleepy.

Thank you Humanbean. After being awake for nearly 5hrs last night and finally sleeping around 9am. I've sent my other half to Holland & Barratt to get magnesium oil spray (own brand & Better you brand) to trial. As I take my Levo at 11pm I'm not sure when or if I could take tablets and at what time so they don't affect the hypothyroidism. If neither of these work I will order the powder you suggested on Amazon. I have it bookmarked £25.90. Thank you so much :)

I have better you magnesium spray. I used to spray it on the soles of my feet but it made the skin thick very strange. So started moving the spray around and rubbing on my thighs etc to prevent this.

Hope all goes well with your scan let us know how you get on I’ll be thinking of you x

Thank you. Will try the sprays for a week and see what happens. I appreciate your help and best wishes. Terrified of the scan in case it says it was/ is a mistake and my body is tricking me, but trying to think positive x

There are a few kinds of magnesium. I take Malate at lunch time as it provides energy and Glycinate at night as it helps sleeping. Think they must do as they say as I got them the wrong way around one day and had a sleepless night!

Hi silverfox7 can I ask what brand of magnesium glycinate you take please. Thank you for my 'lightbulb' moment - taking mag malate, sleeping badly!

Both my magnesiums are from Nutri advanced but can't remember if I got them direct or from Amazon. I like to use Amazon if I can as you can get a code to get a small donation for Thyroid Uk who run this forum. Don't know the code off hand but it's on the Thyroid UK site-also worth a read!

Thank you for the info. They are in my basket!

Will look for the amazon code tomorrow, it has disappeared from the links on the right and need to go to bed now!!

Magnesium citrate helps legs relax and helps with constipation from slow thyroid too at bedtime. Can rub the Magnesium oil into legs too.

Good luck with appointment.😀

Bath in magnesium flakes before bed. ☺️

I will look out for the magnesium flakes... never heard of them. I ate a banana around 3:30am this morning as my other half said 'give it a go'. Didn't work. Finally crashed out around 9am only to be woken again for my injection, cyclogest and other meds. Will give it ago. If I had my fit bit on it would say 10000 steps in the evening and no sleep. x

Magnesium sulphate is better applied topically. The issue with magnesium sulphate or anything you put in a bath is you need massive quantities to make any difference.

I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing x

A probably silly treatment for restless legs I heard somewhere on the forum was to sleep with a bar of soap in bed next to them. I tried this because I was desperate for anything, and I feel like it may have helped a bit.

A more serious suggestion, magnesium spray onto my calves helps me a lot. I used to use the Better You spray you can buy anywhere, but recently started using their cream and rubbing that into my calves at night.

I think that ceruloplasmin is needed to carry copper around in the blood stream. I have tested both zinc and copper and I know that having high levels of one and low levels of the other is a common problem. I had high (over the range) levels of copper and lower half of the range zinc, so I don't think having adequate copper is a problem for me.

I would try anything. I ate a banana at 3am but that didn't work. I ended up crying on the sofa as each time I went back to bed thinking it may have sorted itself out, it kicked in again. I've sent my other half to Holland & Barratt to get magnesium oil spray (own brand & Better you brand) to trial. If I get on with it, I will try their cream as well. The things we have to do/ try. Many thanks :)

Better you also do the magnesium flakes. You can use the oil & the flakes. So spay the oil in the morning and before bed as well as a 20 min soak in magnesium flakes or foot bath with the flakes is also good. Lots of research that favours magnesium absorption via the skin 🤗

Ok, I'll get the flakes and use in a bowl of hot water. I'm not having baths at the moment, just showers. I'm sure it's fine to bath now, but the clinic said not after transfer. I will ask them if it's ok to have a hot bath now with the mag flakes when I go for the scan. I feel so bad for taking a tramadol. I don't think 1 would do much, but when the pain is sooo bad, and I'm pacing the living room like a ghost in the early hours. It's so cold in the morning as our heating doesn't come on till 8am either. Not many jobs I can think of doing in the early hours without making too much noise and keeping oh awake. Thanks for your reply. x

I know this may sound stupid but I’ve increased my quantity of water. I too have restless legs. During pregnancy I craved watery fruit and veg. I don’t know something to try? I drink 2 cups on waking. Then another 14 cups during the day. 4 L a day.

I’m not pregnant now (baby is 19) but still have restless legs, I’ve had them since 14 yrs old. Too bad it didn’t count as cardio.

💕 to you.

I do drink a lot of water. Maybe 4L a day. I can't drink coffee any more which was my go to, and energy drinks. So filtered brita water is my go to. I'm not craving anything like fruit or veg. I do have veg in the evening. It's a nightmare. So pleased your baby is now 19 :) I'll try and monitor when and how often etc. Thank you x

Has your B12 been tested, I used to get the most horrendous restless leg syndrome, all stopped once my low B12 was supplemented. Restless leg is the first symptom I get when I need another injection of b12. The folic acid stops you presenting with Anaemia but not sure how. Might be an avenue to explore!!

I had a blood test on Thursday and asked them to check that, along with iron and TSH etc for me. Hoping to pick up results on Monday. I've never had B12 injection, just using a B12 Better You mouth spray and a Vit B tablet supplement. It has to be something like that. I will carefully look at my results on Monday. Thanks for your suggestion. Can't put up with this every evening. I'm turning into a vampire (awake at night) and sleeping during the day.

Taking b12 or b complex will skew your results which will probably look high but it's good you are using the spray so dont worry about high results. 😀

Oh ok. Thanks, I'll keep that in mind :)

I cut out gluten and dairy and the side effect was no more restless legs and the occasional tinnitus I had went to. I also take magnesium citrate which seems to help. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dixie59, I've been GF for nearly 2 years as I have Hashimotos and Hypothyroidism. I am also losing my hearing a little and have tinnitus. Will try the magnesium citrate. Shame my GP didn't consider mentioning this to me. She referred me for physio last year and although the guy was lovely he said "it's your blood work, not your muscles etc. I can't do anything to help you'. The GP then swore blind that 'drinking a full glass of tonic water with quinine and eating a banana was the cure'. That was a fail as well. Why don't they know this stuff ? Thanks so much will keep you all posted xx

Hi

The best way I found was to have a red cell magnesium test. It’s not available via a gp but they can do it in hospital just don’t like to.

There are some private labs that do it. I had mine through my specialist and mine was awful.

Trust me a banana contains potassium and will not even scratch the surface of any deficiency.

I’ve ended up on magnesium sulphate injections which I had thro pregnancy and still do.

No cramps ( which were v severe) and restless legs.

I’d have to search a lab for you.

In the meantime please look at

drmyhill.co.uk.

On the top right hand corner of the home page is a search bar. Type in magnesium and there is a great article on treatment for a deficiency if this is what you have.

Off hand the test is circa £39.

Sadly she is full at the moment but all the information you need on most any subject is there.

Good luck

Thanks Howard39, very interesting. Wow, that you now have no RSL after the injections. It sounds stupid but it can be quite debilitating at night and painful when you just need rest. It's too cold to put the heating back on and stay awake all night. x

I had 5 torn muscles from the tight cramping so something had to be done.

I am v lucky to have a great specialist who agreed to let me have them.
