Hi guys - I posted a lot last week but I’m still waiting for a copy of my bloods and turned out he didn’t test my B12 so now waiting on those too.
However earlier in the year it was 296. So I know it is very unlikely they are going to offer treatment. So I’d like to buy supplements but ones that are going to work! Any recommendations?

Have you checked for signs of B12 deficiency b12deficiency.info/signs-an... If you have any then you should post on the Pernicious Anaemia Society forum for further advice when you get your results. If you have no signs of deficiency then you can supplement with sublingual methylcobalamin lozenges, 5000iu daily to start with to boost your level, then when that bottle is finished change to 1000iu daily as maintenance.
When taking B12 we need a B Complex to balance all the B vitamins. Highly recommended is Thorne Basic B.
Hello @seasidesusie yes i definitely have symptoms. But I’m thinking if when the results come back they are are around the 200/300 mark I know the Dr won’t treat. So thanks I will post when results come. Where can I get the lozenges from please?
If you have symptoms then your GP should investigate, regardless of what the result is. When you get your result, post on the PA forum, quote the result, folate result, ferritin and iron results if you have them, and list any B12 deficiency symptoms you have. They will advise where to go from there.
Solgar methylcobalamin sublingual lozenges used to be the favourite, they've now gone extremely expensive and some people have had batches that haven't dissolved properly. You could look at Jarrow Methyl B12 bigvits.co.uk/product.php?p... and maybe check out the others listed there. Also look at liquid and sprays. As long as it's sublingual that's fine. But please, as you have signs of deficiency, you really need to get further investigation which is what I think the PA forum will advise and probably tell you what to get checked. It's not as simple as taking B12 if you have symptoms.
@seasidesuzie Can’t seem to find the anaemia forum?!! B12 results are back and they are 275. I haven’t got a print out still but I think ferritin was 8.6 ( trying to remember on what she told me).
Different doc this time. Still saying this is normal.
I said it’s dropped as my b12 was 296 in April she said it fluctuates.
Afraid your attempts to call out to SeasideSusie have not worked. You need to type @ S e a s i d e S u s i e (without the spaces) and select the name that appears in the list. Not just type the name.
When you type the name with @ in front, below your message there should be a list to choose from (as long as you have spelled the name accurately). You may have to scroll down a bit to see it. Then you choose from the list of names that have appeared, click on the one you want and it will turn blue.
Sorry BluebellPettle I forgot to put the link to the PA forum. Here it is healthunlocked.com/pasoc You have to click to 'follow' them then you can make a post.
I forgot to post this information too, I must have been having a busy day!
I have read (but not researched so don't have links) that BCSH, UKNEQAS and NICE guidelines recommend:
"In the presence of discordance between test results and strong clinical features of deficiency, treatment should not be delayed to avoid neurological impairment."
And an extract from the book, "Could it be B12?" by Sally M. Pacholok:
"We believe that the 'normal' serum B12 threshold needs to be raised from 200 pg/ml to at least 450 pg/ml because deficiencies begin to appear in the cerebrospinal fluid below 550".
"For brain and nervous system health and prevention of disease in older adults, serum B12 levels should be maintained near or above 1000 pg/ml."
Thank you for the info, I have felt tired and forgetful for as long as I can remember. I’ve always put tiredness down to a tendency towards depression.
I’m pretty sure I’m suffering anxiety right now which is causing the physical symptoms but I am thinking that all of this could be down to b12 deficiency..?
Every Doctor I have spoke to whoever says that my results are normal. It is very frustrating... what can I do to aid treatment ?
That really depends on whether you are experiencing any signs/symptoms of B12 deficiency. Did you check them with the list in the link I gave earlier. If you have any then include them in your post on the PA forum.
