Saw the Doctor

I saw the Dr today, gave her the results of my blood test (Thyroid + 11 from Blue Horizon), and asked for an increase in my Levothyroxine from 100 mcg to 125 mcg. After looking at the results she agreed an increase was in order and said to have another blood test in 10/12 weeks, done at the surgery.

She agreed with SeasideSusie about the Multi Vitamin I was taking.

I asked about my Vitamin D level (test showed 62 nmol) but she said it was OK and that I was already taking a supplement for it with the Adcal-D. However SS said my level needed to be nearer 100-150 nmol/L.

I asked about my Ferritin (test showed 26ug/l) she said my iron levels were fine, but that I did not store it very well. SS suggested it needed to be 70/75ug/l. The Doctor also said that too much iron was not good for you, it did nasty things to your liver.

If I get some BetterYou D3/K2-MK7 combined spray is there going to be any overdose danger? Also which Magnesium supplement would you recommend please?

Similarly should I supplement the Ferritin in any way and are there danger lines to be observed with that? Sorry but liver will not feature on the menu....I have hated it from being a child, along with tomatoes! I could include more eggs into the diet and add dried fruit to my breakfast with no problem. I currently have Oatibix but could swop that for Granola. I am allergic to cows milk and always have goats milk and goats butter.

I will get some Selenium also a Vitamin B complex. is there anything else I should supplement with please?

Does anyone know if there is any connection between Thyroid problems and Asthma?

Thanks for all your help.

SeasideSusie is the best person to respond to your query. I know breathlessness can be associated with hypothyroidism and I shall give you a link which was posted previously.

In general, doctors know very little about nutrition and supplements, they're not taught it, so as far as they're concerned, if it's in range it's OK, they know nothing about optimal levels.

I asked about my Vitamin D level (test showed 62 nmol) but she said it was OK and that I was already taking a supplement for it with the Adcal-D. However SS said my level needed to be nearer 100-150 nmol/L.

It's the Vit D Council that recommends 100-150nmmol/L. We are in the northern hemisphere with no capacity to make our own Vit D during the winter, therefore our bodies use the Vit D we manage to store during the summer. So during the winter our Vit D level is likely to fall as it's used, hence virtually everyone should take a maintenace dose during the winter. Your GP wont know about D3's important cofactors either, most important being magnesium which helps D3 to work, and K2-MK7 which directs the extra calcium to bones and teeth and away from arteries and soft tissues.

I asked about my Ferritin (test showed 26ug/l) she said my iron levels were fine, but that I did not store it very well. SS suggested it needed to be 70/75ug/l. The Doctor also said that too much iron was not good for you, it did nasty things to your liver.

Many articles mention 70 minimum for thyroid hormone to work eg from Stop The Thyroid Madness website:

Optimally, females often are around 70-90 with ferritin (Janie’s is 80 or less when her iron is good), though getting up to the 50’s has been good, too, when iron and % sat are OPTIMAL. Men tend to be slightly above 100, such as 110 – 120.

Your GP said your level of 26 was fine purely because it's in range. The articles mentioning ferritin levels and thyroid hormone wont agree with your GP.

Similarly should I supplement the Ferritin in any way and are there danger lines to be observed with that? Sorry but liver will not feature on the menu....

I don't recommend or suggest any form of iron supplements, purely because there's more to it than just ferritin. If ferritin level is low then as you know I suggest eating liver, that's a personal choice whether you eat it or not. There are other iron rich foods which you can include in your diet but none contain as much iron as liver apjcn.nhri.org.tw/server/in...

If I get some BetterYou D3/K2-MK7 combined spray is there going to be any overdose danger?

Not as long as you retest as recommended, twice a year, to keep level within the recommended range. GP probably wont retest, it can be done with a simple fingerprick blood spot test with City Assays vitamindtest.org.uk/

cost £28

Also which Magnesium supplement would you recommend please?

You need to decide which form is best for you naturalnews.com/046401_magn... then find a decent brand. I take magnesium citrate because I need help with my bowels, and I buy the powder form with no added ingredients because I don't want any unnecessary fillers, etc.

I will get some Selenium also a Vitamin B complex. is there anything else I should supplement with please?

Vit C is a good all round supplement, it helps support the adrenals. Minimum 2000mg daily in divided dose.

You may want to consider a probiotic, Co-enzyme Q10, Fish Oil (I use Krill), but research to satisfy yourself.

Does anyone know if there is any connection between Thyroid problems and Asthma?

Non-Hypos get asthma, Hypos get asthma, I don't think you can say there is definitely a case of Hypothyroidism causes asthma.
