One week after TT and lymph node removal

Well here I am on the other side of my surgery, 5 months from seeing my Gp about my swollen lymph nodes. A six hour op waved goodbye to my Thyroid and all the anterior lymph nodes on the right side. Now swollen and sore, black and blue with a wound starting behind my right ear and finishing at my left collar bone. On 175mg Levo daily and calcium as some parathyroid was lost in surgery. Quite a bit of nerve feeling affected...my right ear is still numb and right along my jaw. Follow up appointment next Tuesday to talk about RAI treatment.

The numbness improves and mostly disappears but it can take quite a few months. The bruising might look worse before it gets better. Take care of yourself, eat well, sleep lots and rest.

All good wishes for a speedy and full recovery Lindsay. Day by day you will feel better and it's amazing how quickly your scar will heal - there are many extremely effective products such as silicon cream and strips. Stay brave and strong!🌺

Lindsaydawson603,

You'll be surprised how quickly you heal but it will take a few weeks for the bruising and scarring to fade. Unless all 4 parathyroid glands were lost even 1 parathyroid gland can produce the PTH you require so you may not need calcium permanently.

RAI is a doddle. It is basically bed and breakfast to keep you in isolation. Frequent showers every day and drinking copious amounts of fluids help flush the RAI from your system which will enable you to go home quicker. Some hard boiled sweets to suck on can relieve dry mouth which some patients experience for a few days.

Oh ouch you poor soul, I had a hemi thyroidectomy and then a second completion with lymph removal six weeks later, two four hour ops, this was three and a half years ago now ,I did have the RAI a few months later. The first year I was on Liothyronine,60 mg a day split into three doses, then after the radioactive scan in the December they put me on 150 mg a day of levothroxine that was a year of feeling absolutely awful then they put me on 30 mg Liothyronine plus 100 levothyroxine & after a few months I felt the most normal I had in years, been mostly ok ever since. It can be a bit of a rollercoaster ride & I hope you recover quickly, rest, rest, rest is my advice ,all the best X
