Any tips for nausea?

Obviously I mean getting rid of it!!!!

I was hoping starting the T3 might help but although even after just a week my head is feeling less like it’s full of cotton wool, I’m not repeating myself as much, less aches and pains and generally a lot more upbeat I still have this constant nausea.

I’m not eating, have zero appetite and have lost over 2 stone in 6 weeks. The weight loss is great because I need to lose that and then some but not in this way.

So far I’ve been prescribed cyclizine and metoclopamine neither of which have worked for longer than 30 minuets and I’ve also tried ginger tea(won’t be doing that again!) and peppermint tea.

I’m also going for a short synacthen test on Tuesday as my 9am cortisol was a bit low and I have all the symptoms of Addison’s with the exception of craving salt. It wasn’t drastically low though so I don’t think it’s that but we’ll see.

All my levels except ft3 are really good including Vit D, B12, ferritin etc tsh was 0.11 and ft4 is almost at the top of the range.

Does anyone have any ideas either medication wise or not. At this point I’ll try anything.

Perhaps you have low stomach acid? Are you not eating anything at all? No wonder your conversion is bad.

I have a hiatus hernia so I’ve had to take a ppi for years but nothing had changed to cause this so suddenly.

Up until 6 weeks ago I loved my food(gluten free obviously) but now I’m lucky if I can stomach 4 pieces of toast and a banana a day, and that’s only because I make myself eat them.

Yes, being hypo can reduce your appetite considerably. Perhaps you just need to give your T3 time to work, you've only been on it a very short time.

But, taking PPIs, as well as being hypo, is going to mean that your stomach acid is very low. So, absorption of your T3 will be limited, too.

I know it will take time and have no problem with that I could just do with something to help with the nausea while it does.

I never realised what that little thing in your neck was responsible for until it decided to pack up and die on me!

Same here! I didn't even know what it was called!

I think you're going to have to find out what's causing the nausea before you can know what to take to help it. And I'm afraid I have no ideas, apart from low stomach acid.

Emma2312,

One of the more common medicines used is prochlorperazine (sold as Buccastem). Prescription-only.

It can help but isn't a wonder cure.

Also ginger - such as decent quality crystallised ginger. I don't even like strong ginger, but found it did help. Probably rather more effective than the prochlorperazine!

In the end, not sure whether it was improved thyroid hormone levels, improved vitamin D, or something else altogether. But I did come out the other side and rarely get even slight nausea now.

I didn’t think you could take prochlorperazine with a thyroid problem? I could be wrong thought.

I’ll try the crystallised ginger though thank you

The documentation says:

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Prochlorperazine tablets if you:

<...>

an underactive thyroid gland

I was prescribed it whilst taking thyroid hormone! But caution and reading are certainly recommended. And I didn't take many or for long.

Sounds to me like you are on too much thyroid hormone (weight loss). If you get breathless and start sweating - that confirms it.

best wishes
