I take 210mg ferrous fumarate and 800iu vitamin D both on prescription. If I am still feeling unwell on these is it possible my results are still not optimal?

Thanks

Ferritin 16 (15 - 150)

Folate 2.2 (4.6 - 18.7)

Vitamin B12 196 (180 - 900)

Vitamin D 25.3 (25 - 50 vitamin D deficiency)

BlueTopaz,

How long have you been supplementing Ferrous Fumarate and vitD?

Folate is deficient. My GP prescribed 5mg folic acid for a couple of months to correct my folate deficiency.

B12 is very low in range. If you have symptoms of B12 deficiency outlined in b12deficiency.info/signs-an... go to PAS forum healthunlocked.com/pasoc for advice on B12 and folate deficiency.

Ferrous fumarate since 2012, vitamin D since 2012 as well. Doctor said folate was only slightly under range so no action needed.

Blue_topaz,

I would see another GP. Folate is considerably below range and as folate and B12 work together folic acid supplementation to correct the folate deficiency is required. Your B12 is very low too and ideally a GP will check whether this is caused by pernicious anaemia. PAS forum is the best place for advice on low folate and B12 as I advised earlier.

VitD 800iu is a maintenance dose and will not correct a vitD deficiency. My GP prescribed 40,000iu daily x 14 followed by 2,000iu daily x 8 weeks to raise vitD from <10 to 107.

If you can't persuade your GP to raise your 800iu dose buy your own and supplement10,000iu D3 daily x 6 weeks and can then reduce to 5,000iu daily and retest in August. Take vitD 4 hours away from Levothyroxine.

You can buy 5,000iu and 10,000iu D3 softgel capsules on Amazon. If you use Amazon please use the TUK/Amazon affiliate link healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

You need 3 x 210mg Ferrous Fumarate to raise your ferritin level. Take each tablet with 1,000mg vitamin C to aid absorption and minimise constipation. Retest in 4-6 months and take iron 4 hours away from Levothyroxine. Ferrous Fumarate is also available on Amazon if your GP won't increase dose.

Blue_topaz They are a very long way from optimal. For thyroid hormone to work properly, the recommended levels are

Ferritin - minimum of 70 for thyroid hormone to work, recommended is half way through it's range.

Folate - at least half way through it's range, so with that range your looking at 12+.

B12 - anything under 500 can cause neurological problems. Recommended level is very top of range, even 900-1000.

Vit D - 100-150nmol/L

If supplementing iron doesn't bring up your iron then you need iron injection or transfusion. Or more tests to figure out why you are not absorbing iron.

Not what you're looking for?
