Crohn"s Disease and Thyroid

I've resently had Colonoscopy and the results have come back that I now may have Crohn's disease. I have suffering with really bad mouth ulcers for quite sometim that weren't healing up, lots of other symptoms but no one put 2 and 2 together. I was diagnosed with an under active Thyroid last October so a lot of the symptoms we put down to that. Feeling rather down about it., was wondering if it is linked?

there may be - exactly what causes Crohn's doesn't appear to be completely clear - some thought that it might be an auto-immune disorder and having one auto-immune condition - if your thyroid problems are auto-immune - does make it more probable that you have other auto-immune conditions.

Have you had your B12 levels checked and/or are you receiving any treatment for B12 deficiency. Crohn's is one condition that can lead to a B12 deficiency

They have checked all my vitamin levels as far as I know, but I'm seeing the specialist on Friday so I will ask.

get the results if you can for B12 - lots of medics aren't aware of just how unreliable the serum B12 test is as if used as a single guide to B12 deficiency so read normal range and just dismiss.

Hi Kathy6 - I was diagnosed with Crohns 43 years ago and Hashimotos in 2005. Have you had your thyroid anti-bodies tested ? There is often a link with auto-immune conditions and healing the gut can be a long journey - but one worth taking.

Have you had a definite Crohns diagnosis ? - you mentioned you may have it in your post .... Going Gluten Free could be helpful in restoring gut health and lots of other things you can do to help.

Also have FERRITIN - FOLATE - B12 - VITD tested. Results need to be optimal to support thyroid function.

How did the appointment go ? Did you get your results ?

My niece had Crohn's from a very young age she also has no thyroid now either. All the family have thyroid problems some with asthma also.

I really don't know the cause it's something to wonder about.

Not what you're looking for?
