Help with blood test results please.

Hi, I wondered if anyone could help me by looking over my recent test results to see if I should be supplementing with any b bits. I already take 4000iu of vit D3 a day along with the necessary vit K, but no b vits and I have been suffering with hair loss. I am not and never have been on any thyroid meds but suffered with primary hyperthyroidism due to taking Lugol's iodine solution. I stopped the iodine and all went to normal after a few months. I currently feel generally well but have noticed my TSH is higher than it should be on my recent blood test.

Here are my results and ranges.

Ferritin 119ng/ml 30-400 range

Folate 4.6ng/ml 3.89-26.8 range

Hb 12.8g/DL 12-15 range

Vit B12 634 Ng/L 297-771 range

Vit D3 105 nmol/L 50-144 range

TSH 3.52miu/L 0.3-5.5 range

Thanks for all the advice that is given so generously on this forum. I may not currently be suffering but have learned so much from reading the posts on here daily and have been able to help friends who really are having great difficulties getting help from drs regarding their hypothyroidism.

Thanks on their behalf too.

Familymatters,

TSH 3.52 indicates your thyroid is struggling. Make sure you have an annual thyroid test but request one sooner if symptoms become worse. Arrange thyroid blood tests early in the morning when TSH is highest and fast (water only) as TSH drops after eating and drinking.

Folate is a bit low. You could eat more leafy green veg or take a B complex vitamin to raise folate. Everything else looks good.

the results above look reasonably okay - though your folate and haemoglobin look a little on the lower side of normal.

B12 is unlikely to be a problem at that level

best form of folate is actually from food so look at your diet and may be seeing if you can move towards more folate rich foods. If your diet is already rich in folate then look at supplementing with folic acid but unless you are aware that you have a problem with methylation (eg MTHFR or MTRR genetic variants) I'd just go for an ordinary supplement.

you always have the option of talking to a pharmacist if you don't feel you can talk to your GP about supplementation
