Natural Sources Raw thyroid experiences

Apologies if this has been posted before, but I can't work out how to search on this forum!

I am 46 year old male with heriditary hypothyroidism. My dad comes from a large family and all of his male and female siblings (7 in total) are hypo. My sister is hypo too from age 18. I take 150mcg Levothyroxine daily since 2002.

I have encountered a brick wall with GPs when asking about NDT, they are happy that Levothyroxine puts my TSH and T4 in the "correct range" and as far as they are concerned that is that!

I am interested in NDT and stopping taking Levothyroxine. I know that there are many options out there Armour, ERFA, Acella's etc, which all require a prescription, but I was wondering if anyone with diagnosed underactive thyroid (not Hashi's) has replaced or supplements their prescribed synthetic with Natural Sources Raw Thyroid?

This product is OTC in the US and as far as I am aware OTC thyroid treaments should not contain T3/T4. However as this is being sold as a supplement and not a treatment, it would not be required to remove T3/T4 from the dessicated glands. However the labelling does not state the T3/T4 content.

It is available from online Vitamin retailers, and is also on UK eBay and has the obvious benefit of not requiring a private prescription. It is also comparitively cheap. It gets very good reviews on the Vitamin website, but a lot are from people who take it without any diagnosed condition, who feel they have the symptoms of being hypo. It's hard to work out which ones genuinely have a thyroid that isn't working properly.

Therefore, I'd love to know experiences of anyone out there who has the same diagnosis as me!

Many Thanks

Just to add that I can now search! My browser wasn't playing ball when I entered the text in the search box and after a reboot it's fine.

Welcome to the forum, TeaEarlGreyHot.

Raw Thyroid is a supplement, not thyroid hormone replacement. You are taking a reasonably high dose of Levothyroxine which suggests you have little natural thyroid function. You risk becoming very hypothyroid while you use yourself as a guinea pig to determine how much Raw Thyroid, if any, is sufficient for you.

You can buy Armour and other brands of prescription NDT online without prescription and because the T4 and T3 content is known it is possible to estimate the equivalent dose to 150mcg Levothyroxine is 2.25 grains (135mg - 146mg). Usual advise is to titrate Levothyroxine and NDT by reducing Levothyroxine dose by 75mcg and adding 1 grain NDT for 2 weeks, then stop Levothyroxine and increase NDT to 2 grains for 2 weeks, and then increase to 2.25 grains, hold for 6-8 weeks and have a thyroid test including FT3 before increasing further.

Thanks for the reply Clutter.

No I definintely don't want to use myself as a guinea pig!

So NS Raw Thyroid, despite containing bovine thyroid tissue, doesn't contain quantifiable T4/T3 and can't be used as an NDT medication then?

I was under the impression that it is sold as a supplement rather than a medication to get around the rules regarding T4/T3 being present in it.

Yes please obtaining NDT option, I'll PM you.

Many thanks
