vit b12 test allowance
Hi ksm, I don't know if he will allow you. BUT it is important to know what your levels are. I had my checked recently and the result was 309. My doctor did not even acknowledge the reading. I did some research and found how important B12 is and that at the lowest it should be 500 and optimal 1000. When I asked the forum for advice they told me this was too low and recommended an oral spray which I have been taking now for 2 months. I had bursitis which is a symptom of low B12 and it is clearing up. My advice would be to ask your doctor, and if not go private. I just wanted to write about how important it was for me, so keep at it
They should test you if you have symptoms - do you regularly have full blood count done? High MCH points to vit b12 deficiency and mine was which was how I got b12, folate and ferritin tested.
Blue horizon do private tests if not.
i second above answers. It's vital that you know what your Vitamin B12 levels are especially if you have the symptoms and i don't see why your GP would not allow you to have one if you have the symptoms.
They did mine because the gastro said I needed my vitamin amd minerals monitoring.
My B12 was bumping on the bottom of the range. I was told it was fine. But if I wanted tp take B12 it "wouldn't hurt". This was from the Endo so be prepared for total ignorance
I asked for mine as I am feelin really tired, dizzy, nauseous and spaced out a lot (along with other symptoms). GP asked what do you think we should do and I asked for b12, iron, folate and vit d which she did and she said seemed sensible. So just ask
Yes I would ask, I had to be tested as my feretin levels had dropped to 275?? Not sure what that means, but I believe it is considered low. So I have been on B12 shots and iron since for both B12 deficiency and anaemia, which seem to go hand in hand. Oh I forgot, evidently my Endo, said that it has nothing to do with your thyroid problems - just a coincidence! Ha ha I say, very funny (not). Yes definitely ask. If you can afford to go private, have a test done privately if the answer is "no" by the GP - at least then you will have the evidence. Let us know how you get on
