Members are more likely to share sources if you share a little information such as whether you are diagnosed, how long you've been diagnosed and whether you are prescribed Levothyroxine and, if so, what dose.
Hi - thank you for your message. I have been diagnosed with central hypothyroidism and am on 25 mg levo, which is helping a lot. I still suffer with symptoms at times. It has taken 6 years to get the diagnosis. I'm not seeing the endo for 6 months and wanted to see if a slight increase in dose puts paid to the symptoms. I doubt I would get a sympathetic ear at the GP! Results - FT4 10.92 (12-22 pmol/l); ft3 4.71 (3.1-6.8 pmol/l); tsh 1.65 (0.27-4.20 IU/l).
Hi there
They should be retesting after 6 to 8 weeks to see whether you're on the right levo dose. Also it takes about 2 weeks for rhe levo to get into your body and around a year for the full improvement to hit home. As such I'd suggest you stay on the levo for at least a few months and double check if they want a re test of your levels more quickly than 6 months
I stayed on levo for a year, got tested for the di02 defect (I have it) and then went down the ndt route.
Good luck
Hi there
There's a dna test you can do (available from Thyroid UK website) that shows if you have this faulty gene. If you do have it it means that your ability to convert t4 to t3 is impaired; particularly in the brain.
When I was diagnosed I took t4 for a year, I felt better (tiredness reduced and my 7 day hormonal migraines went down to 3-4 days etc) but not well. I took ndt and it felt like my iq increased by about 20 points. I didn't know that my thinking had been so impaired until I took the ndt as the changes had been so gradual that I hadn't realised just how wooly headed I'd become until I took ndt and stopped being so wooly headed!
Thyroid issues run in my family and it was why I took the dna test as I suspected there might be a genetic link
