Dear Admins

38yrs female diagnosed mildly hypothyroid in 2009 started on 25mcg levothyroxine increased over the years up to 150mcg and back down to 50mcg now up to 75mcg again (on Dianette for skin, to regulate periods & PCOS for a year in 2014 - could this have masked symptoms & affected thyroid blood results?)

19yrs - severe clinical depression prescribed SSRIs

10 yrs medication free

Since 29yrs been on a mixture of anti-depressants & fluctuating thyroxine throughout my 30s.

Now also on a mood stabiliser and lorazepam for anxiety.

In simple terms, can you pls explain whether it's my thyroid or mental health that needs treating & where in Birmingham I can get the best holistic help as I'm struggling to stay sane.

Thanks.

  • Hello Rxxxx,

Welcome to our forum and sorry to hear of your health problems.

An imbalance of thyroid hormones can cause anxiety, mood impairment, difficulty concentrating, poor memory, general intellect deterioration, depression with sadness and problems with sleep and appetite, etc, etc... It can also be accountable for losing touch with reality, becoming delirious, hallucinating and mimicking schizophrenia or dementia.

Anxiety over these psychiatric and psychological disorders can often make everything worse. A very low T3 level (triiodothyronine) gave me terrible head problems. I eventually started medicating on T3 just 4 months ago and feel so much better.

PCOS is common in hypothyroidism and often involves impaired blood sugar regulation so could progress to insulin resistance and then diabetes. (good link below)

Please note that all admin staff are volunteers who are not medically trained. In fact I would say many members have a better knowledge of thyroid function than some admin (me) but together we all offer our experiences, knowledge and support.

If you have any recent thyroid hormone blood test results, post complete with ranges (numbers in brackets) for members to comment.

Do you have Hashimotos as high thyroid antibody levels can do strange head things too?

I don't live in Birmingham so can't advice of holistic help but others might.

  • Flower! I hadn't come across this article on hashimotos and the monthly cycle and more at a loss now! My blood pressure normally 80x60 even 70x50 some days. Cholesterol really low( vegan since my teens pescatarian last 4 years), and anemic. No wonder my cycle is all over the place and my PMD out of control. Started progesterone pessaries now prescribed by gp feeling fine this cycle but after reading the article not sure if it's the right direction

  • Brubru,

Cholesterol gets such bad press but is crucial in the makings of oestrogen, progesterone, cortisol and many other important hormones in the body.

It is not just foods you need to make cholesterol but balanced thyroid hormones. Low thyroid hormone (indirectly) can't break down and remove cholesterol so it becomes high.

You haven't filled out your profile so I'm guessing you are hypothyroid which is strange with low cholesterol.

There are different measurements for cholesterol.

LDL contains high amounts of cholesterol that can build up in the artery walls so is usually deemed as bad.

HDL is able to remove & carry cholesterol from the arteries to the liver where it can be eliminated so is deemed more beneficial.

Were you low in the total measure? This isn't always an accurate guide because it depends on the ratios.

  • That's one more thing I didn't know. I've been meaning to complete my profile. I will. I have to find my tests but doctors were obviously happy but I do have issues with my sex hormones.

  • Flower007 heartfelt thanks for the info, links & OMG - I just read yr story! It is disconcerting to say the least.
