Thank you for those links GG... very informative, and very useful.

I've emailed the web pages to myself. Sadly it hasn't worked.

Wish there was a way of filing such info on here, under our names....... so much great info from yourself and other members isn't always easy to re-find.

Can you not just save the pages to your favourites once you have opened the link? Dépends what you're working on.

If you're on a PC, you can save the photo to your images file by right clicking on it and selecting the appropriate action from the menu.

Hey gg what magnesium you use? And what kind of dosage? Been thinking about buying some even though I am using oil but feel I might need more. This posting reminded me of you knowing a lot about magnesium. :)

At the moment, I'm taking about 400 mcg magnesium citrate. But that will probably change when that bottle runs out and I have to buy another. Thinking of trying magnesium glysinate, but dépends on availability. :)

I am in a quandary about magnesium. Females 'need' 310 to up to 400 mg per day... upper number is for pregnant and lactating..... If this is somehow obtained through diet, then these are the high magnesium food categories: (please check mg per 100 grams and mg per 1 cup cooked) healthaliciousness.com/arti...

Thing is, 'need' means what exactly? Does it mean this is how much a person should be consuming in food? Or does it mean this is how much magnesium from the food needs to be absorbed? Should unabsorbable magnesium be taken into consideration in some sort of equation?

The thing is, some food items, like cooked greens contain X mg of magnesium per cup. But do we absorb that? Or do we absorb only a percentage of X. I'm asking because magnesium is present in chlorophyll (the oxygen carrying green molecule in the chloroplasts of plant cells). I know this is a bit on the TMI side (again) but if I eat cooked greens, what comes out the other end is also green. Which tells me that chlorophyll molecules are exiting intact. Which means the magnesium is also exiting.

So let's say a person consumes from food sources based on the measurements posted on nutrition data charts 400 mg of magnesium (give or take), how much of that magnesium is absorbed and how does that factor in with adjusting diet in accordance with the body's 'needs'?

Should have put 'nerd alert' at the beginning of this comment......

More nerdly thinking: the human body contains approx. 25 grams of magnesium. If someone would be consuming 300 mg of magnesium on a daily basis, consistently, and all of it were absorbed and not excreted either through feces or urine, then that would mean 2.1 grams of magnesium could be incorporated per week. Which absolutely can't be happening.

That would be 104+ grams per year....... That would be magnesium overload if somehow excess weren't excreted or intake is not reflecting absorption.

Stop! You're giving me a headache! And that will mean I'll need more Mg! lol

Your 'calculations' Don't take into consideration that the body uses magnesium - it isn't recycled like iodine - we use it up.

Secondly, food doesn't contain as much magnesium as it used to because soils are depleted, So I Don't think we can count on x containing y amount of Mg anymore.

Thirdly, I'm working on the assumption that I absorb zero from what I eat, and not much from what I supplement. I read somewhere - and now I can't find it! - that taking 400 a day is a very meagre estimation of what we 'need', and that that will just do for our daily consumption but won't do anything to help the deficiency. Some people are taking double that and it's still not enough.

I am pretty certain (gut feeling) that I've been mangnesium deficient (and B12 deficient - not to mention hypo with dodgey adrenals) since I was a child. So, me personally, I esteme that I've got a lot of catching up to do! But, I can't speak for others.

One of the main problems is the difficulty of testing for magnesium. As is mentioned in one of the articles. How do you know you're getting enough? I certainly notice it if I forget to take my 400 mcg! Sometimes I take more, but it dépends on my gut reaction - if you'll excuse the pun!

However, I have to say, you see lots of articles about magnesium deficiency, but never one about the dangers of over-dosing - or even the symptoms of over-dosing. So, I'm pretty confident in what I'm taking. If things start to go bottoms-up (another pun! oh I'm on form tonight!) I'll let you know. :D

Agreed. Even super large doses of magnesium glycinate will cause 'loo loo trip to the loo'......(I paraphrase). Dose tolerance needs to be determined on an individual basis and it depends on the 'gut reaction'.

Absolutely!

Hi, Do you know what the problem with oxide is please? The Magnesium I have bought from Holland & Barrett , which just has Magnesium on the front label... states oxide as one of the ingredients on the back... There is so much to learn..glad I have good teachers x Thank you

As far as I know, the problem is that you can't absorb it, that's all. So, it's a bit of a waste of money. :(

Thanks greygoose... I'm pretty good at wasting money.x
