I started taking magnesium to stop sugar cravings & neuropathic pain, as well as improve my sleep. I was slapdash about remembering to take it for a week in summer, & found I had cramp the following week.

There are different types. Chelated is the most bioavalable. I take this at bedtime on an empty stomach for best absorption. Some people take citrate after meals to reduce constipation. Transdermal magnesium is absorbed better than oral, but I find the commercial sprays extremely painful, so have to dilute them by half. I make my own weaker, & also much cheaper spray which I can tolerate. I find 250g of magnesium hexahydrate crystals to 1l of distilled witch hazel is fine for daily use, though I take low dose oral supplement as well. It also works as a natural deodorant.

I wouldn't be without my magnesium! I'm not sure it helps T4 to T3 conversion, but it helps a lot of other things : RLS, cramps, itchy skin, even weight-loss. And there's nothing like it for constipation - except, perhaps, vit C.

Surely that would only cure things related to magnesium deficiency? This is common, but I don't think it's a miracle mineral to cure all illness. ;)

Magnesium, and K2, are. O factors of taking VIT D. Have you ever had that tested? Vit D is often low with thyroid problems and along with B12, folate anfcferritin help convert the T4 into the active T3 that every cell in our bodies need so be worth testing those 4 anyway to see if they are optimal. Doctors often think if we are in range we are fine but they need to be towards the top end.

It was probably the 2nd most helpful thing for me, (after strictly gluten free diet). Couldn't tolerate any vitamin D without improving magnesium first.

Standard magnesium test is useless. Only measures what's in blood, not cells

If the standard test for magnesium is useless, how do you find out if your cells are able to utilise magnesium?

greygoose and SlowDragon which type of magnesium do you take? And how much?

I use Calm Vitality Magnesium powder. It's cheap and easy to use

Must be minimum 4 hours away from Levo

Started on low dose, in afternoons (I take Levo at bedtime). Took at maximum dose (2teaspoons) for about year, now reduced slightly

I just take magnesium citrate tablets, 400 mg. Works for me. But, I think it's better to take it six hours away from thyroid hormone. I did do a little experimenting, and I think six hours is best.

Im on Magnesium Malate at the moment, was hoping it would help with muscle weakness....not sure it is.

I tried magnesium malate once. I didn't feel it did anything for me. I prefer the citrate.

I think tentatively, from my wife's experience, that taking magnesium citrate is useful in helping to prevent atrial fibrillation episodes (she's Hashimoto's on T4, since 1970). This is only anecdotal, because we have a regime of taking magnesium for a while, stopping and then seeing how long before another AF episode occurs. Then starting again and noting what happens. So far, the idea that Mg citrate helps prevent AF episodes or at least minimise their effect seems to hold up.

Interesting. I found magnesium didnt help with my AF, but mine is not caused by hypothyroidism, maybe thats the reason? I found Taurine (research states 2-4g) at 4g stopped mine in about an hour. Any less didnt work. Taking the powder may work quicker and you may be able to use less.

If you are taking Magnesium hoping that it helps with T4 to T3 conversion get your Magnesium from Brazil nuts, just 2 a day though, don't overdo it. Brazil nuts are rich in Magnesium and Selenium and the latter will definitely aid in the T4 to T3 conversion.

These results seem truly staggering for benefits of magnesium on TSH

Wish I had picked this up 3 months ago!

Started yesterday on magnesium citrate

Does anyone have any stories where magnesium and selenium together made a major impact
