Hi Grey, that is a useful page, thank you. I'm a little confused about mg though, I've been taking it / spraying it on to help with bouts of insomnia, but then when I start sleeping again it makes me feel really tired/groggy the next day. Does this happen to other people?! Maybe I am getting enough from my diet, or at least maybe I don't need the full rda from supplements. Interested to hear others' experiences!

Hi I took mg in doses of around 400 mg per day for about a year then I could no longer tolerate it except in v small doses. The citrate oil spray and epsom salts always give me a really bad hangover the next day if I use the rec dose. I have never been able to figure it out and I've tried the full range of chelated mag.

That's interesting to hear, glad it's not just me that gets a magnesium hangover! I probably should stop messing about with different supplements without really knowing what I'm doing...

Hi There is a blood test for magnesium. It is important not to go over range as an electrolyte and affects heart and kidneys.

Hi Jackie, good of you to point out the dangers of going over range with magnesium. A lot of people seem to think magnesium is harmless and the more the better!!!

I've never had a problem taking magnesium, except that I feel I can never get enough. I asked my last doctor to test it, but he refused, saying that the test was very expensive and not reliable. So, I continue with the epsom salt baths, and the tablets.

Hi There is a lot in a lot of foods. There are 2 tests, the better one is dearer but the basic one is used all the time in hospital. If over range any supplement

has to be stopped immediately.

There is a lot in foods, but if you're hypo and have low stomach acid, you can't absorb it.

My nutritionist has told me I have a big imbalance between calcium and magnesium and so should sit in epsom salt baths or spray myself with Epsom salt solution after washing and before putting anything else on my skin. If it is needed this is a much better way to take up magnesium as I'm told you just cant take enough in tablet form. Cheaper too.

The best way for your body to get magnesium is with magnesium oil or in a bath with magnesium flakes. This way you also can't overdose because the body takes what it needs.

My blood showed a magnesium deficiency, tried magnesium pills but this was so horrible (24/7 on the toilet with horrible cramps and cold sweats, sorry TMI) that I had to stop. I've bought magnesium flakes and made my own magnesium oil. I didn't notice anything..I want to have it get checked again so will ask my GP.

You weren't taking the right form of magnesium, then. There are several different forms - magnesium glycinate; magnesium oxide: magnesium carbonate; etc - and not all of them give you diarrhea.

Thank you for that link, greygoose. I hadn't heard of several of the listed supplements before and wasn't aware that so many were available.
